ABSTRACT A finite difference method was proposed to model the effect of a variety of tool coatings on the magnitude and distribution of temperatures through the tool-chip contact region and the coating/substrate boundaries. For each workpiece-tool pair tested the intensity of uniformly distributed heat flux and relevant analytically obtained values of the heat partition coefficient were assumed to change with variations of cutting speed and the corresponding friction. Transport properties of heterogeneous materials. Combining computerised X-ray micro-tomography and direct numerical simulations

Feasibility of a method for finding flow permeability of porous materials, based on combining computerised X-ray micro-tomography and numerical simulations, is assessed. The permeability is found by solving fluid flow through the complex 3D pore structures obtained by tomography for actual material samples. We estimate overall accuracy of the method and compare numerical and experimental results. Factors contributing to uncertainty of the method include numerical error arising from the finite resolution of tomographic images and the rather small sample size available with the present tomographic techniques. BACKGROUND Endodontically treated teeth are widely considered to be more susceptible to fracture than vital teeth. Obturation procedures and post placement have been a main cause of vertical root fracture. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty-eight human premolars with standardized weakened roots were endodontically treated and allocated to four experimental groups (n=12). Guiding and reflecting light by boundary material

We study effects of finite height and surrounding material on photonic crystal slabs of one- and two-dimensional photonic crystals with a pseudo-spectral method and finite difference time domain simulation methods. The band gap is shown to be strongly modified by the boundary material. As an application we suggest reflection and guiding of light by patterning the material on top/below the slab.

Abstract Building envelopes under various climates behave differently, in this paper the actual thermal transmittance or U-value of five different wall assemblies are evaluated and compared with values, calculated using standard EN ISO 6946. The experiment is carried out in five test buildings with equal spatial orientation, the same ceiling and floor assemblies as well as the same windows and doors mounted in each building.
