Clinical Presentation and Differential Diagnosis of Oral Cancer

Over 90% of oral cancers are squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) which are of epithelial origin. Other types of malignancies account for the small remaining 10%. In this chapter, we describe the clinical characteristics of early- and advanced-stage OSCC and also consider the differential diagnosis of early-stage OSCC. The priority concern is to establish an early diagnosis, in order to secure the best possible prognosis and highest survival rate among oral cancer patients.

We present a case of a patient with two lateral periodontal cysts in the maxilla and the mandible, respectively, and review the English literature on multiple lateral periodontal (LPCs) cysts and/or gingival cysts (GCs) and botryoid odontogenic cysts (BOCs). The patient was a 59 year-old female with two fluctuant swellings covered by semi-lucent mucosa on the attached gingiva between the maxillary and mandibular right canine and first premolar teeth, respectively. An atypical variant of Ewing's sarcoma, located in the left hip of a nine-year-old girl, is discussed at optical, histochemical and electron microscopical level. The endothelial appearing cells seem to play a main role in its histogenesis. Dentigerous cysts are one of the most common odontogenic cysts of the oral cavity. Odontogenic cysts can give rise to a variety of neoplasms.
