Nitric oxide metabolites and erythrocyte deformability in a group of subjects with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

Our aim was to evaluate nitric oxide metabolites (nitrite and nitrate), expressed as NOx, and erythrocyte deformability, expressed as elongation index, in a group of subjects with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). We enrolled 48 subjects (36 men and 12 women; mean age 50.3 ± 14.68 yrs) with OSAS diagnosed after a 1-night cardiorespiratory sleep study. OSAS severity was assessed evaluating the apnea/hypopnea index (AHI) and subjects were subdivided in two subgroups: Low (L = AHI 30). A radiometric and petrographic interpretation of discrepancies on uranium content in samples collected at Alte Madonie Mounts region (Sicily, Italy)

Abstract The main goal of this work is to evaluate a correlation between anomalous Uranium (U) content and petrographic features of some soil and rock samples collected at Alte Madonie Mounts region (North-central Sicily, Italy). A total of 41 samples of selected soils and rocks were collected, powdered, dried and sealed in “Marinelli” beakers for 20 days before the measurement to ensure that radioactive equilibrium between 226 Ra and 214 Bi was reached. Techniques to evaluate erythrocyte deformability in diabetes mellitus

Using several rheological techniques, we examined the erythrocyte deformability in different groups of diabetic subjects. The macrorheological techniques used for this evaluation were respectively whole-blood filtration, filtration of erythrocyte suspensions, polyviscosimetry and diffractometry. Whole-blood filterability, at a negative pressure of 20 cm water, was decreased in type 2 diabetics; no difference was evident at a negative pressure of 10 cm water. The filtration of erythrocyte suspensions at low haematocrit (5%) did not show differences between normal and diabetic subjects. Investigation of phthalocyanine crystals exposed to NO2 ambient gas

Crystals of free base phthalocyanine (H2pc) and its unsubstituted metal derivatives Mpc (where M=Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, and pc=C32H16N8 2−=phthalocyanine ligand) were examined after being exposed to NO2 ambient gas. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) supported by X-ray microprobe analysis (EDAX), UV–Vis and FTIR spectroscopy as well as X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD) were applied to study the crystals chemistry and surface morphology. The NO2 molecules were found to penetrate the crystal unit which led to the breakdown of the phthalocyanine macrocycle.
