Role of Biological Sex in the Cardiovascular-Gut Microbiome Axis

2022

There has been a recent, unprecedented interest in the role of gut microbiota in host health and disease. Technological advances have dramatically expanded our knowledge of the gut microbiome. Increasing evidence has indicated a strong link between gut microbiota and the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). In the present article, we discuss the contribution of gut microbiota in the development and progression of CVD. We further discuss how the gut microbiome may differ between the sexes and how it may be influenced by sex hormones. We put forward that regulation of microbial composition and function by sex might lead to sex-biased disease susceptibility, thereby offering a mechani…

Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GISTs)

2021

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are a group of tumors that, over the past 15 years, has emerged from a poorly understood neoplasm to a well-defined tumor entity. GISTs are highly resistant to conventional chemotherapy and, in the past, were typically managed surgically.

Immunohistochemical profile of canalicular adenoma of the upper lip : a case report

2007

Canalicular adenoma is an uncommon benign salivary gland neoplasm that has a marked predilection for occurrence in the upper lip. It is composed of columnar cells arranged in branching and interconnecting cords of single or double cell thick rows. This tumor has an excellent prognosis after conservative surgical treatment in all locations. In the present report we describe, using immunohistochemistry, the expression of cytokeratins (CK), S-100 protein and EMA in a canalicular adenoma that arose in the upper lip of a 55-year-old female. Cells of the canalicular adenoma showed an immunohistochemical profile that indicates an excretory duct origin: most of these cells positively expressed AE1/…

Expression of ?-catenin in carcinoma in pleomorphic adenoma, pleomorphic adenoma and normal salivary gland : An immunohistochemical study

2006

Objetives. Pleomorphic adenomas are the most frequent type of epithelial salivary gland neoplasms, and their malignant counterpart, the carcinoma in pleomorphic adenomas, is much less common. ?-catenin is a cell adhesion molecule associated with the invasion and metastasis of carcinomas of the head and neck, esophagus. The objective of this study was to detect the expression of ?-catenin in pleomorphic adenomas, carcinomas in pleomorphic adenomas and normal salivary glands to discuss its role in the development of these two lesions. Study Design. The expression of ?-catenin (BD Transduction Laboratories) was analyzed by immunohistochemistry in formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded specimens by …

Cirugia de revisión en la lumbociatica

1987

The author presents eleven personal cases in which it has been necessary a revrsion surgery of the previous intervention for lumbar disk hernia, in order to have relapsed symptoms after the free assymptomatic interval. The common finding at surgery was a membrane flavectomy with or without a disk hernia.

Enzimas salivales y enfermedad periodontal

2006

Heat Shock Protein 60 in Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Insights and Perspectives

2020

Heat shock protein 60 (HSP60) is a mitochondrial chaperone that is implicated in physiological and pathological processes. For instance, it contributes to protein folding and stability, translocation of mitochondrial proteins, and apoptosis. Variations in the expression levels of HSP60 have been correlated to various diseases and cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Unlike other HSPs which clearly increase in some cancers, data about HSP60 levels in HCC are controversial and difficult to interpret. In the current review, we summarize and simplify the current knowledge about the role of HSP60 in HCC. In addition, we highlight the possibility of its targeting, using chemical com…
