Description of a new species: Dorylaimus parasiticus , a parasite of amphibians in the Iberian Peninsula (Nematoda: Dorylaimida)
1995
Dorylaimus parasiticussp. nov. (Nematoda: Dorylaimidae) si described from the digestive tract and general body cavity of Salamandra salamandra, Rana perezi, and Bufo bufo, amphibians of the Iberian Peninsula (Spain). This is the first record of a member of the Order Dorylaimida size, a thick transversely striated body cuticle with 20 to 26 longitudinal ridges.
Colorectal cancer incidences in Lynch syndrome: a comparison of results from the prospective lynch syndrome database and the international mismatch r…
2022
Abstract Objective To compare colorectal cancer (CRC) incidences in carriers of pathogenic variants of the MMR genes in the PLSD and IMRC cohorts, of which only the former included mandatory colonoscopy surveillance for all participants. Methods CRC incidences were calculated in an intervention group comprising a cohort of confirmed carriers of pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in mismatch repair genes (path_MMR) followed prospectively by the Prospective Lynch Syndrome Database (PLSD). All had colonoscopy surveillance, with polypectomy when polyps were identified. Comparison was made with a retrospective cohort reported by the International Mismatch Repair Consortium (IMRC). This com…
Verbesserte Orts- und Kontrastauflösung in der Ultraschalldiagnostik durch Nutzung Harmonischer Frequenzen
2001
Background: The aim of new techniques in head and neck sonography is to increase the sensitivity and the specificity of the examination, With tissue harmonic imaging (THI) and contrast harmonic imaging (CHI) new techniques are available which allow increased contrast and resolution in head and neck sonography as well as a better detection of small blood vessels. Methods: We studied whether these techniques improve sonographic detection of head and neck lymph nodes and primary tumours of the upper aerodigestive tract. Results: The results indicate that THI allows a better detection of cervical lymph nodes. Furthermore, intranodal structures and the borders of the lymph node can be better det…
Definition of the Rectum An International, Expert-based Delphi Consensus
2019
Mini: A radiological, anatomic distinction between the rectum and sigmoid colon was agreed by consensus of international experts in rectal cancer using the Delphi Technique. Use of this landmark, “the sigmoid take-off,” may harmonize efforts in research and clinical practice to improve patient outcomes. Background: The wide global variation in the definition of the rectum has led to significant inconsistencies in trial recruitment, clinical management, and outcomes. Surgical technique and use of preoperative treatment for a cancer of the rectum and sigmoid colon are radically different and dependent on the local definitions employed by the clinical team. A consensus definition of the rectum…
Detection of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma in a context of acrokeratosis paraneoplastica: Case report
2018
Background: Acrokeratosis paraneoplastica is an infrequent paraneoplastic disease in which cutaneous lesions appear and develop in a context of an underlying malignancy. Upper aerodigestive tract carcinomas are the most common neoplasias associated with this syndrome. The aim of this report is to raise awareness of this syndrome, since the recognition of the skin lesions could allow suspicion and diagnosis of the underlying neck malignancy at an early curable stage. Methods: We report a case of a 62-year-old life-long smoking male who presented a several months evolution of multiple skin lesions, affecting both ear lobes, hands and feet. He was referred for appropriate diagnosis and treatme…
Health-Related Quality of Life Issues Experienced by Thoracic and Breast Sarcoma Patients: A Rare and Understudied Group
2021
Thoracic and breast sarcomas constitute a rare subgroup within the sarcoma population. There is limited knowledge about their health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and a valid disease-specific HRQoL instrument is lacking. This qualitative study aimed to investigate the HRQoL issues experienced by a small group of thoracic and breast sarcoma patients. Semi-structured interviews with 19 thoracic and four breast sarcoma patients were conducted and thematically analysed. Physical issues mentioned by both groups were fatigue, sleep disturbances, pain, wound infections, and symptoms related to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Tightness in the back and restrictions in performing tasks above arm hei…
Fit-for-Discharge Criteria after Esophagectomy: An International Expert Delphi Consensus
2021
Summary There are no internationally recognized criteria available to determine preparedness for hospital discharge after esophagectomy. This study aims to achieve international consensus using Delphi methodology. The expert panel consisted of 40 esophageal surgeons spanning 16 countries and 4 continents. During a 3-round, web-based Delphi process, experts voted for discharge criteria using 5-point Likert scales. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Consensus was reached if agreement was ≥75% in round 3. Consensus was achieved for the following basic criteria: nutritional requirements are met by oral intake of at least liquids with optional supplementary nutrition via jejunal fe…
Diet composition and seasonal feeding patterns of a freshwater ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis)
2015
The Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis) is one of the few freshwater seal populations worldwide. The major conservation issue of this critically endangered population is bycatch mortality. We used digestive tract content and stable isotopes (d13C and d15N) to estimate the diet and seasonal feeding patterns for gaining better understanding of the seals feeding habits and potential conservation implications. The diet was similar across age groups. Altogether 15 fish species were identified and the most important were smelt (Osmerus eperlanus), ruff (Gymnocephalus cernuus), perch (Perca fluviatilis), vendace (Coregonus albula) and cyprinids. The high d15N values suggested that the seal…
