Free field realization of cylindrically symmetric Einstein gravity

1998

Cylindrically reduced Einstein gravity can be regarded as an $SL(2,R)/SO(2)$ sigma model coupled to 2D dilaton gravity. By using the corresponding 2D diffeomorphism algebra of constraints and the asymptotic behaviour of the Ernst equation we show that the theory can be mapped by a canonical transformation into a set of free fields with a Minkowskian target space. We briefly discuss the quantization in terms of these free-field variables, which is considerably simpler than in the other approaches.

Gravity-mediated dark matter in clockwork/linear dilaton extra-dimensions

2020

We study for the first time the possibility that Dark Matter (represented by particles with spin $0,1/2$ or $1$) interacts gravitationally with Standard Model particles in an extra-dimensional Clockwork/Linear Dilaton model. We assume that both, the Dark Matter and the Standard Model, are localized in the IR-brane and only interact via gravitational mediators, namely the Kaluza-Klein (KK) graviton and the radion/KK-dilaton modes. We analyse in detail the Dark Matter annihilation channel into Standard Model particles and into two on-shell Kaluza-Klein towers (either two KK-gravitons, or two radion/KK-dilatons, or one of each), finding that it is possible to obtain the observed relic abundanc…

Spin-dependence of gravity-mediated dark matter in warped extra-dimensions

2021

We study the spin-dependence of Dark Matter (DM) particles which interact gravitationally with the Standard Model (SM) in an extra-dimensional Randall-Sundrum scenario. We assume that both the Dark Matter and the Standard Model are confined to the TeV (Infra-red) brane and only interact via gravitational mediators, namely Kaluza-Klein gravitons and the radion. We analyze the different DM annihilation channels and find that it is possible to achieve the presently observed relic abundance of Dark Matter, $\Omega_{\rm DM}$, within the freeze-out mechanism for DM particles of spin 0, 1/2 and 1. We study the region of the model parameter space for which $\Omega_{\rm DM}$ is achieved and compare …

Self-accelerating solutions of scalar-tensor gravity

2007

Scalar-tensor gravity is the simplest and best understood modification of general relativity, consisting of a real scalar field coupled directly to the Ricci scalar curvature. Models of this type have self-accelerating solutions. In an example inspired by string dilaton couplings, scalar-tensor gravity coupled to ordinary matter exhibits a de Sitter type expansion, even in the presence of a {\it negative} cosmological constant whose magnitude exceeds that of the matter density. This unusual behavior does not require phantoms, ghosts or other exotic sources. More generally, we show that any expansion history can be interpreted as arising partly or entirely from scalar-tensor gravity. To dist…

Can conformal Transformations change the fate of 2D black holes?

1998

By using a classical Liouville-type model of two dimensional dilaton gravity we show that the one-loop theory implies that the fate of a black hole depends on the conformal frame. There is one frame for which the evaporation process never stops and another one leading to a complete disappearance of the black hole. This can be seen as a consequence of the fact that thermodynamic variables are not conformally invariant. In the second case the evaporation always produces the same static and regular end-point geometry, irrespective of the initial state.

Free fields via canonical transformations of matter-coupled two-dimensional dilaton gravity models

1998

It is shown that the 1+1-dimensional matter-coupled Jackiw-Teitelboim model and the model with an exponential potential can be converted by means of appropriate canonical transformations into a bosonic string theory propagating on a flat target space with an indefinite signature. This makes it possible to consistently quantize these models in the functional Schroedinger representation thus generalizing recent results on CGHS theory.

Computation of Amplitudes in the Discretized Approach to String Field Theory

1988

An approach to Witten string field theory based on the discretization of the world sheet is adopted. We use it to calculate tree amplitudes with the formulation of the theory based on string functionals. The results are evaluated numerically and turn out to be very accurate, giving, for a string approximated by 600 points, values within 0.02% of the prediction of the dual model. The method opens a way to calculate amplitudes in string field theory using nonflat backgrounds as well as compactified dimensions.

Clockwork Goldstone Bosons

2017

The clockwork mechanism has recently been proposed as a natural way to generate hierarchies among parameters in quantum field theories. The mechanism is characterized by a very specific pattern of spontaneous and explicit symmetry breaking, and the presence of new light states referred to as `gears'. In this paper we begin by investigating the self-interactions of these gears in a scalar clockwork model and find a parity-like selection rule at all orders in the fields. We then proceed to investigate how the clockwork mechanism can be realized in 5D linear dilaton models from the spontaneous symmetry breaking of a complex bulk scalar field. We also discuss how the clockwork mechanism is mani…

Solvable Models for radiating Black Holes and Area-preserving Diffeomorphisms

1995

Solvable theories of 2D dilaton gravity can be obtained from a Liouville theory by suitable field redefinitions. In this paper we propose a new framework to generate 2D dilaton gravity models which can also be exactly solved in the semiclassical approximation. Our approach is based on the recently introduced scheme to quantize massless scalar fields coupled to 2D gravity maintaining invariance under area-preserving diffeomorphisms and Weyl transformations. Starting from the CGHS model with the new effective action we reestablish the full diffeomorphism invariance by means of an adequate family of field redefinitions. The original theory is therefore mapped into a large family of solvable mo…
