Spectroscopic and physicochemical properties of rare-earth phthalocyanines entrapped in sol-gel glasses

Abstract The electronic absorption spectra of samarium and neodymium phthalocyanines in DMSO and entrapped in glasses obtained via the sol-gel technique have been obtained. Decrease in concentration of metallophtalocyanines in DMSO leads to observed changes in the relative intensifies of the two bands in the Q-band region. This behavior could be explained by the shifts in equilibrium between the LnPc 2 and LnPc + forms, caused by the dilution. In view of this interpretation, the entrapment of the metallophthalocyanines in the sol-gel glass matrices shifts the diphthalocyanine ⇆ monophthalocyanine equilibrium towards the monophthalocyanine (LnPc + ) form.

A comparative study on sample preparation procedures for supplementary foods by ICP-OES: Green chemistry considerations

An inductively coupled plasma optical emission (ICP-OES) method was developed for the simultaneous determination of major, minor and trace elements in food. Preliminary studies focused on selecting suitable operational conditions in order to provide the highest sensitivity and to maximize the number of analytes to be determined without spectral or matrix interference. The present paper describes the certification of the amount content of Cd, Cr and Pb in two different polyethylene materials within the third phase of the Polyethylene Elemental Reference Material (PERM) project. The analytical procedure to establish the reference values for Cd, Cr and Pb amount contents in these materials is based on isotope dilution mass spectrometry used as a primary method of measurement. Cd and Pb were measured with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and Cr with positive thermal ionization-mass spectrometry. Flame atomic absorption analysis of gold in jewelry samples

A new procedure is proposed for the determination of gold by flame atomic absorption in jewelry samples. The method is based on the acid digestion of 10 mg of sample in a microwave oven and on the on-line dilution, using a three-way valve. The dynamic range of the technique is extended to 100 mg/l gold solutions and using a weighted bracketing method for the treatment of the results, accuracy errors lower than 2% can be found in the analysis of real samples as compared with those obtained by fire assay. The method is very fast and implies only little damage to the jewelry samples.

Energetics of sodium dodecylsulfate-dodecyldimethylamine oxide mixed micelle formation

Enthalpies of dilution and osmotic coefficients of the sodium dodecyl-sulfate (NaDS)-dodecyldimethylamine oxide (DDAO) mixtures in water have been measured at 25 and 37°C, respectively. From the enthalpies of dilution the apparent molar relative enthalpies LΦ were calculated. The change of the LΦ vs. total molality mt profiles with the mole fraction reflects the variation of the ionic character of the mixed micelles. From the osmotic coefficients the nonideal free energy G2ni were calculated. By combining G2ni with the partial molar relative enthalpies, the nonideal entropies TS2ni were determined. Thermodynamic properties and conductivities of some dodecylsurfactants in water

Densities, heat capacities, enthalpies of dilution, osmotic coefficients and conductivities are reported for dodecylamine hydrochloride, dodecyldimethylammonium and dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride in water over a wide range of concentration. The last two properties were also measured for dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide. From the thermodynamic data partial molar volumes, heat capacities and relative enthalpies and nonideal free energies and entropies were derived as a function of the surfactant concentration. B-Lines for the assessment of extravascular lung water: Just focused or semi-quantitative?

BACKGROUND B-lines as typical artefacts of lung ultrasound are considered as surrogate measurement for extravascular lung water. However, B-lines develop in the sub-pleural space and do not allow assessment of the whole lung. Here, we present data from the first observational multi-centre study focusing on the correlation between a B-lines score and extravascular lung water in critically ill patients suffering from a variety of diseases. A number of phthalates and their metabolites are suspected of having teratogenic and endocrine disrupting effects. Especially the developmental and reproductive effects of di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) are under scrutiny. In this study we determined the concentrations of the secondary, chain oxidized monoester metabolites of DEHP, mono(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl)phthalate (5OH-MEHP) and mono(2-ethyl-5-oxo-hexyl)phthalate (5oxo-MEHP) in urine samples from the general population. Determination of ethyl sulfate – a marker for recent ethanol consumption – in human urine by CE with indirect UV detection

A CE method for the determination of the ethanol consumption marker ethyl sulfate (EtS) in human urine was developed. Analysis was performed in negative polarity mode with a background electrolyte composed of 15 mM maleic acid, 1 mM phthalic acid, and 0.05 mM cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) at pH 2.5 and indirect UV detection at 220 nm (300 nm reference wavelength). This buffer system provided selective separation conditions for EtS and vinylsulfonic acid, employed as internal standard, from urine matrix components. Reference Values for a Homogeneous Ferritin Assay and Traceability to the 3rd International Recombinant Standard for Ferritin (NIBSC Code 94/572)

Abstract Reference values for two ferritin assays (Tina-quant®a Ferritin, Enzymun®, both Roche Diagnostics, Mannheim, Germany) were established (136 males and 139 females). To rule out inflammation as well as iron deficiency in the reference population, subjects with the C-reactive protein concentration < 5 mg/l, and zinc protoporphyrin < 40 µmol/mol heme and the soluble transferrin receptor < 3 mg/l were selected. Taking into account latent iron deficiency as well as hereditary hemochromatosis the 5–95 percentile range was as follows: male, 27–365 μg/l; female, 13–148 μg/l for Tina-quant®a and 12–151 μg/l for Enzymun®.
