Towards the understanding at the molecular level of the structured-water absorption and fluorescence spectra: a fingerprint of π-stacked water

2013

An intriguing absorption peak around ∼270 nm (4.59 eV) has been recurrently recorded in aqueous solutions of salts, sugars, amino acids, in the free-solute zone (exclusion zone) adjacent to various hydrophilic surfaces, as well as a transient in the conversion process of ice to water. The corresponding associated fluorescence has been observed in the interval 480–490 nm (2.58–2.53 eV). The spectroscopic features have been related to the presence of structured water but its nature remains incompletely understood. On the basis of high-level ab initio computations, the main absorption feature of structured water is assigned to the presence of two π-stacked ground-state water molecules, prefera…

Unusual redox play of Mo(V/IV) during oxidative aryl–aryl coupling

2012

The oxidative treatment of a suitable 1,3-diarylpropene precursor by MoCl5 causes a series of redox steps yielding a dimer of dibenzo[a,c]cycloheptene. After the oxidative aryl–aryl bond formation, a C,H activation occurs providing a tropylium intermediate. Upon aqueous workup the metal waste acts as reductive media generating the dimer in an almost quantitative manner. The oxidative generation of the tropylium species as well as the subsequent redox play by the metal waste is unique and unprecedented. The dimeric compound can be oxidatively cleaved and subsequently decarboxylated providing the key intermediate of a previous synthesis of metasequirin-B derivatives.

Complexes of tetra(parasulphonatephenyl)porphyrinato ferrate(III), FeTPPs, with 1,10 phenanthroline and 2,2′ bipyridine ligands

1985

Abstract Iron(III) porphyrin, FeTPPS, gives high-spin 1:1 monomeric complexes with the ligands 1,10 phenanthroline, 2,9 dimethylphenanthroline and 2,2 bipyridine in aqueous solution. Absorption spectrum of the complexes is very different to the one of the monomer metalloporphyrin, but nearly identical to the visible spectrum of the μ-oxo dimer Fe2(TPPS)2O. A spectrophotometric study of the formation equilibria yields the following values of the stability constants: Me2phen 4.3 × 104, phen 1.1 × 104, bipy 2.0 × 102 (25 °C, 0.1 M NaNO3). Analysis of the experimental data strongly suggest that the ligands are hydrogen bonded to one coordinated water molecule (TPPS)FeOH2 → (LL). Although the …

Synthesis, vibrational and NMR spectroscopic characterization of [N(CH3)4][IO2F2] and X-ray crystal structure of [N(CH3)4]2[IO2F2][HF2]

2004

Abstract The salt, [N(CH3)4][IO2F2], was prepared from [N(CH3)4][IO3] and 49% aqueous HF, and characterized by Raman, infrared, and 19F NMR spectroscopy. Crystals of [N(CH3)4]2[IO2F2][HF2] were obtained by reduction of [N(CH3)4][cis-IO2F4] in the presence of [N(CH3)4][F] in CH3CN solvent and were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction: C2/m, a = 14.6765(2) A, b = 8.60490(10) A, c = 13.9572(2) A, β = 120.2040(10)°, V = 1523.35(3) A3, Z = 4 and R = 0.0192 at 210 K. The crystal structure consists of two I O 2 F 2 − anions that are symmetrically bridged by two H F 2 − anions, forming a [F2O2I(FHF)2IO2F2]4− dimer. The symmetric bridging coordination for the H F …

N-Alkyl Ammonium Resorcinarene Chloride Receptors for Guest Binding in Aqueous Environment

2016

Host systems with guest binding ability in water and/or biological fluids are a current challenge in supramolecular host–guest chemistry. Here we present the first syntheses of water-soluble N-ethanol ammonium resorcinarene chlorides (NARCls) with terminal hydroxyl groups at the upper rim. The NARCls possess deep cavities and are shown to bind a variety of guest molecules such as linear and cyclic alkanes, linear halogenated alkanes, and aromatic fluorophores (naphthalene, p-(phenylazo)phenol) in water through hydrophobic interactions, as well as 1,4-dioxane (a water soluble guest) via hydrogen bonds. The receptors are monomeric in aqueous media and form 1:1 host–guest complexes with bindin…

Invasive Observation by Atomic Force Microscope of a Langmuir-Blodgett Monolayer of Gramicidin

2002

The properties of gramicidin, a linear antibiotic polypeptide of 15 amino acids, have been studied at the air-water interface. Analysis of the pressure-area isotherm is not able to conclude about the conformational behavior of gramicidin in the monolayer. Langmuir-Blodgett deposition of gramicidin layers onto a mica substrate has been developed for atomic force microscopy (AFM) observations. At high pressure of deposition, the gramicidin monolayer is composed of dimers perpendicular to the surface. The possibility of removing the half upper part of this dimer monolayer with the AFM tip is more in favor of a structure of single-stranded helical dimers.

The size of aryl linker between two polyaza-cyclophane moieties controls the binding selectivity to ds-RNA vs ds-DNA

2013

Aryl-linked (pyridine- vs. phenanthroline-) bis-polyaza pyridinophane scorpiands PYPOD and PHENPOD strongly bind to the double stranded DNA and RNA, whereby very intriguing RNA over DNA selectivity is finely tuned by aryl-linker length and aromatic surface. Moreover, PYPOD and PHENPOD dimer formation at high compound/polynucleotide ratios is highly sensitive to the fine interplay between the steric and binding properties of compound-dimers and the DNA minor groove/RNA major groove. That is demonstrated by significantly different induced CD spectra, which allow spectroscopic differentiation between various DNA/RNA secondary structures. A significantly higher (micromolar) antiproliferative ef…

The Low-Affinity ATP Binding Site of the Escherichia coli SecA Dimer Is Localized at the Subunit Interface

1997

The homodimeric SecA protein is the ATP-dependent force generator in the Escherichia coli precursor protein translocation cascade. SecA contains two essential nucleotide binding sites (NBSs), i.e., NBS1 and NBS2 that hind ATP with high and low affinity, respectively. The photoactivatable bifunctional cross-linking agent 3'-arylazido-8-azidoadenosine 5'-triphosphate (diN(3)ATP) was used to investigate the spatial arrangement of the nucleotide binding sites of SecA, DiN(3)ATP is an authentic ATP analogue as it supports SecA-dependent precursor protein translocation and translocation ATPase, UV-induced photo-cross-linking of the diN(3)ATP-bound SecA results in the formation of stable dimeric s…

4,4-Di-fluoro-2,3;5,6-bis-(tetra-methylene)-4-bora-3a,4a-di-aza-s-indacene (LD540).

2014

The title compound, C18H21BF2N2, is a lipophilic dye based on a BODIPY fluorophore backbone, which was developed for microscopic imaging of lipid droplets; the molecule has a planar BODIPY core [dihedral angle between the pyrrole rings = 2.3 (3)°] and two tetramethylene substituents at the 2,3- and 5,6-positions in a half-chair conformation. One of the tetramethylene substituents is disordered over two two sets of sites with site occupancies of 0.5. In the crystal, pairs of C—H...F interactions link the molecules into inversion dimers. Neighbouring dimers are linked by further C—H...F interactions, forming an infinite array. C—H...π and π–π [centroid–centroid distance = 4.360 (3) Å] interac…

Non-Innocent Base Properties of 3- and 4-Pyridyl-dithia- and Diselenadiazolyl Radicals : The Effect of N-Methylation

2018

International audience; Condensation of persilylated nicotinimideamide and isonicotinimideamide with sulfur monochloride affords double salts of the 3-, 4-pyridyl-substituted 1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolylium DTDA cations of the general formula [3-, 4-pyDTDA][Cl][HCl] in which the pyridyl nitrogen serves as a noninnocent base. Reduction of these salts with triphenylantimony followed by deprotonation of the intermediate-protonated radical affords the free base radicals [3-, 4-pyDTDA], the crystal structures of which, along with those of their diselenadiazolyl analogues [3-, 4-pyDSDA], have been characterized by powder or single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structures consist of “pancake” π…
