AbstractConservation of the endangered freshwater pearl mussel (FPM) includes artificially rearing juveniles, but the pulsed flow-through (PFT) method, enabling the continuous renewal of water and food in culture containers, has not been applied to FPM. This study tested the PFT method in culture of FPM juveniles, and the effect of water source (tap vs well water) and food concentration (mixture of commercial phytoplankton products) on the survival and growth of juveniles. Beaker-specific survival rates varied from 0 to 100% (mean: 34%) and from 0 to 58% (mean: 16%) in the 1st (2-week) and 2nd (10-week) experiment, respectively. Many animal viruses replicate and are released from cells in close association to membranes. However, whether this is a passive process or is controlled by the virus remains poorly understood. Importantly, the genetic basis and evolvability of membrane-associated viral shedding have not been investigated. To address this, we performed a directed evolution experiment using coxsackievirus B3, a model enterovirus, in which we repeatedly selected the free-virion or the fast-sedimenting membrane-associated viral subpopulations. The purpose of this article is to complement the existing literature on defining the rural by suggesting a novel approach that makes possible a holistic understanding of the rural. The proposed approach is based on deconstruction of the concept of the rural and on hermeneutical philosophy. The current approaches applied in rural studies are evaluated through the lens of holistic understanding, and solutions to the observed problems are discussed. The problems of current rural studies stem from inadequate conceptualization and biased social theory. Toistaiseksi tiedetään varsin vähän siitä, millainen ymmärrys oppilaiden vanhemmilla on koulukiusaamisesta. Vanhemmat on huomioitu koulukiusaamista tarkastelevissa tutkimuksissa pääasiassa kartoitettaessa kenelle oppilaat kertovat kokemastaan kiusaamisesta. Ei kuitenkaan tiedetä, millainen käsitys vanhemmilla on oman lapsensa ja toisten oppilaiden toiminnasta kiusaamistilanteissa, ja millaisia osallisuuden muotoja vanhemmat tunnistavat koulukiusaamisprosesseissa. Sitäkään ei tiedetä, missä määrin vanhemmat tunnistavat oman lapsensa koulukiusaamisongelmia ja olettavatko he lapsensa kertovan heille, mikäli tätä kiusataan tai hän itse kiusaa toisia oppilaita.
