Abstract A unified study of energy and volume functionals is presented here by determining the critical points of a functional that extends simultaneously energy and volume and that is defined on the product of the manifold of smooth maps C∞(M,N) times the manifold M of riemannian metrics on M. The restriction of this functional to different submanifolds of the space of vector fields X (M)× M is also considered, and used to study several functionals generalizing volume and energy or total bending of vector fields

This chapter tackles the question of interpersonal understanding from the point of view of so-called “moments of meeting.” Coined by Daniel Stern and his colleagues, this term refers to specific and particularly intense experiential situations, where two (or more) persons attune to each other’s affective experiences, thus “cocreating” an experiential area that exists to these two individuals exclusively—a “shared private world,” as Stern puts it (Stern, 2004). Research Findings: The purpose of the present study was to examine the extent to which the quality of teacher–child interactions and teachers’ self-reported curriculum emphases are related to children’s reading skill development during their 1st school year. To accomplish this, we assessed the reading skills of 1,029 Finnish children (M age = 85.77 months) twice during Grade 1, and the children’s teachers (n = 91) completed questionnaires concerning their literacy-related curriculum emphases. Research Findings The aim of this study was to examine associations between two aspects of teachers’ occupational well-being, i.e., teaching-related stress and work engagement, and the quality of teacher–child interactions in Finnish kindergarten classrooms. Participants were 47 kindergarten teachers with their classrooms of 6-year-old children. In this study the task is to point out the key features in the making of a Swedish nation from the perspective of a minority language, i.e. the Finnish speaking minority in the region of Norrbotten, Sweden. Swedish historians usually list the fear of Russia (Russia, the arch-enemy -topos) and the Laestadian movement as main reasons for the policy of cultural assimilation of the Finnish-speaking minority.
