Effect of indoor nitrogen dioxide on lung function in urban environment

2015

BACKGROUND: High levels of indoor NO2 are associated with increased asthma symptoms and decreased expiratory peak flows in children. We investigated the association of exposure to domestic indoor NO2, objectively measured in winter and spring, with respiratory symptoms and lung function in a sample of adolescents from a southern Mediterranean area. METHODS: From a large school population sample (n=2150) participating in an epidemiological survey in the urban area of the City of Palermo (southern Italy), a sub-sample of 303 adolescents was selected which furnished an enriched sample for cases of current asthma. All subjects were evaluated by a health questionnaire, skin prick tests and spiro…

Cerebral haemodynamic changes during propofol-remifentanil or sevoflurane anaesthesia: transcranial Doppler study under bispectral index monitoring

2006

Background. Sevoflurane or propofol–remifentanil-based anaesthetic regimens represent modern techniques for neurosurgical anaesthesia. Nevertheless, there are potential differences related to their activity on the cerebrovascular system. The magnitude of such difference is not completely known. Methods. In total 40 patients, treated for spinal or maxillo-facial disorders, were randomly allocated to either i.v. propofol–remifentanil or inhalational sevoflurane anaesthesia. Transcranial Doppler was used to assess changes in cerebral blood flow velocity, carbon dioxide reactivity, cerebral autoregulation and the bispectral index to assess the depth of anaesthesia. Results. Time-averaged mean f…

Prenatal exposure to residential air pollution and infant mental development: modulation by antioxidants and detoxification factors.

2011

Background: Air pollution effects on children’s neurodevelopment have recently been suggested to occur most likely through the oxidative stress pathway. Objective: We aimed to assess whether prenatal exposure to residential air pollution is associated with impaired infant mental development, and whether antioxidant/detoxification factors modulate this association. Methods: In the Spanish INfancia y Medio Ambiente (INMA; Environment and Childhood) Project, 2,644 pregnant women were recruited during their first trimester. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and benzene were measured with passive samplers covering the study areas. Land use regression models were developed for each pollutant to predict aver…

Modulation of Spatial O2Tension Distribution in Experimental Tumors by Increasing Arterial O2Supply

1995

Tumor oxygenation has been measured polarographically in s.c. implanted DS-sarcomas on the dorsum of the hind foot of male Sprague-Dawley rats. pO2 was determined in all 3 spatial dimensions and 3-dimensional pO2 distributions as well as the mean extent of confluent areas with pO25 mmHg were calculated. Finally, the effect of elevating arterial pO2 (by carbogen breathing) as well as of increasing tumor blood flow (by angiotensin infusion) on the spatial pO2 distribution was analyzed. Depending on the tumor volume, the spatial pO2 distribution is more or less anisotropic. In smaller tumors, areas with physiological pO2 values are found adjacent to large hypoxic areas whereas larger tumors ar…

Tumor Oxygenation in Anemic Rats: Effects of Erythropoietin Treatment Versus Red Blood Cell Transfusion

1995

Anemia was induced in rats by the development of a hemorrhagic ascites. These animals also bore solid tumors (DS-sarcomas) on the hind foot dorsum. The effects of two methods for anemia correction on oxygenation in the solid tumors were compared in this study. Anemia was corrected either chronically by erythropoietin administration (1000 IU/kg) over 14 days (EPO) or acutely by transfusion with red blood cells (TR). Non-anemic and untreated anemic animals served as controls. Tumor oxygenation was determined in anesthetized animals using polarographic needle electrodes and pO2 histography. The reduction in hematocrit and hemoglobin content found in anemic animals could successfully be correct…

?Reliability of new poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) membranes treated with oxygen plasma plus silicon dioxide layers for pre-prosthetic guided bone re…

2017

Background: The use of cold plasmas may improve the surface roughness of poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) membranes, which may stimulate the adhesion of osteogenic mediators and cells, thus accelerating the biodegradation of the barriers. Moreover, the incorporation of metallic-oxide particles to the surface of these membranes may enhance their osteoinductive capacity. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to evaluate the reliability of a new PLGA membrane after being treated with oxygen plasma (PO) plus silicon dioxide (SiO) layers for guided bone regeneration (GBR) processes. Material and Methods: Circumferential bone defects (diameter: 11 mm; depth: 3 mm) were created on the top of ei…

2017

Background Oral cancer is a public health issue worldwide. Oral potentially malignant disorders (OMPDs) are lesions of the oral mucosa that are predisposed to malignant transformation. The mainstay of OMPDs treatment around the world is now the carbon dioxide (CO2) laser but the reported recurrence and malignant transformation rates vary widely in the literature. We aimed to estimate the recurrence and the malignant transformation rates of OPMDs treated with CO2 laser at the University Hospital of Bordeaux, in France, from 2010 to 2014, and to identify associated factors with recurrence or malignant transformation. Material and Methods We conducted a retrospective study in patients with a m…

Oxygen-haemoglobin dissociation curve in hypoxic rats of first or second generation.

1993

SUMMARY 1. Albino Wistar rats were raised in a normobaric hypoxic environment (10% O2 in N2). Two generations of hypoxic rats were observed for changes in their haemoglobin-oxygen (Hb-O2) dissociation curves (ODC), 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG), haemoglobin (Hb), and Hill coefficients at P50 (n50). The first generation were called (H1) and the second generation (H2). The control group (N) had a normoxic environment. 2. Thirty-five rats (13 N rats, 12 H1 rats and 10 H2 rats) were used. The 2,3-DPG was significantly higher in both hypoxic groups when compared with N rats (2.02 ± 0.51 mmol/L) but 2,3-DPG of H2 rats was significantly lower than that of H1 rats (H1 = 3.48±0.58 mmol/L and H2 =…

The Role of Tumor Volume in ‘Reoxygenation’ upon Cyclophosphamide Treatment

1995

The effect of cyclophosphamide (CP) injection (60 mg/kg i.p., single dose) on volume growth and tissue oxygenation (pO2 distribution) was investigated in rat DS-sarcomas. CP was administered 4 days after subcutaneous (s.c.) tumor implantation (volume approximately 0.35 ml). Polarographic pO2 measurements were performed in the subcutis at the hind foot dorsum and in tumors 72 h after CP administration. The oxygenation status of these tissues was compared with that of saline-treated controls. CP-injection caused a mean growth delay of 11 days in DS-sarcomas and had no impact on the oxygenation status of the subcutis. In contrast, in s.c. growing DS-sarcomas the pO2 distribution improved signi…
