On the theory of thermodynamic properties of geometrically confined disordered ferroelectrics

2013

Abstract We propose a theoretical approach to calculate the thermodynamic properties of thin films fabricated from disordered ferroelectrics. To calculate the above thermodynamic properties, we use so-called random field method, modified for the case of thin films. The essence of modification is the altering of the interaction between impurity dipoles by geometrical confinement. We show that in thin films the ferroelectric phase transition is inhibited as compared to the case of bulk samples. Our theory is generalizable to ferroelectrics of other shapes as well as magnets and multiferroics.

Resonance quality, radiative/ohmic losses and modal volume of Mie plasmons

2012

International audience; Molecular sytems are efficiently coupled to metal nanoparticles via the excitation of localized surface plasmons-polaritons (SPPs). The coupling strength between SPP and emitters can be estimated from the ratio Q/V where Q and V refer to the mode quality factor and effective volume, respectively. In this letter, we investigate in details the properties of Mie plasmons supported by a metallic nanosphere (Q-factor, radiative and ohmic losses, modal volume). We particularly focus on the difficulty to unambiguously define the modal volumes of localized SPPs. This leads us to propose two definitions; the first one is based on Purcell factor for a dipolar emitter in close …

Lateral induced dipole moment and polarizability of excitons in a ZnO single quantum disk

2013

The lateral Stark shift of an exciton confined in a single ZnO quantum thin disk of radius R was calculated using a variational approach within the two bands effective mass approximation. It is shown that the exciton has a non negligible induced dipole moment when an external electric field is applied mainly for electron-hole separation below to the 3D excitonic Bohr radius. The behavior of the exciton lateral Stark shift proves the existence of an important correlation between the polarizability and the induced dipole moment.

On the anomalous Stark effect in a thin disc-shaped quantum dot

2010

The effect of a lateral external electric field F on an exciton ground state in an InAs disc-shaped quantum dot has been studied using a variational method within the effective mass approximation. We consider that the radial dimension of the disc is very large compared to its height. This situation leads to separating the excitonic Hamiltonian into two independent parts: the lateral confinement which corresponds to a two-dimensional harmonic oscillator and an infinite square well in the growth direction. Our calculations show that the complete description of the lateral Stark shift requires both the linear and quadratic terms in F which explains that the exciton possess nonzero lateral dipo…

COLLECTIVE SPIN EXCITATIONS OF ALKALI-METAL CLUSTERS

1993

The response function of alkali-metal clusters, modeled as jellium spheres, to dipole (L=1) and quadrupole (L=2) spin-dependent fields is obtained within the time-dependent local-spin-density approximation of density-functional theory. We predict the existence of low-energy spin modes of surface type, which are identified from the strength function. Their collectivity and evolution with size are discussed.

Hyperfine-structure measurements on trapped Pb II.

1992

The 6${\mathit{P}}_{3/2}$-6${\mathit{P}}_{1/2}$ magnetic dipole resonance transition in ${\mathrm{Pb}}^{+}$ has been observed by cw laser excitation of an ion cloud stored in a Paul trap and subsequent detection of the fluorescence radiation. From the hyperfine-structure splitting of the spectrum we determine the A factor for the ground state, A(${\mathit{P}}_{1/2}$)=12.967(13) GHz, and the excited state, A(${\mathit{P}}_{3/2}$)=0.580(3) GHz. From a contamination of $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ in our sample we derived the $^{207}\mathrm{Pb}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}^{208}$${\mathrm{Pb}}^{+}$ isotope shift [\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\nu}=311(14) MHz]. A small electric quadrupole admixture …

Magnetic field and dielectric environment effects on an exciton trapped by an ionized donor in a spherical quantum dot

2017

Abstract Magnetic field and host dielectric environment effects on the binding energy of an exciton trapped by an ionized donor in spherical quantum dot are investigated. In the framework of the effective mass approximation and by using a variational method, the calculations have been performed by developing a robust ten-terms wave function taking into account the different inter-particles correlations and the distortion of symmetry induced by the orientation of the applied magnetic field. The binding and the localization energies are determined as functions of dot size and magnetic field strength. It appears that the variation of magnetic shift obeys a quadratic law for low magnetic fields…

Element-specific magnetic properties of mixed 3d−4f metallacrowns

2018

Single molecule magnets comprising rare earth metals are of high interest due to the unquenched orbital moments of the rare earth ions that result in a large energy barrier for magnetization reversal. We investigate the magnetic properties of polynuclear $3d\text{\ensuremath{-}}4f15$-MC-5 metallacrowns using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism of powder samples at a temperature of 7 K in a magnetic field of 7 T. The sum rule analysis reveals element-specific spin and orbital moments. The magnetic moments of the $3d$ transition metal Ni(II) ions are coupled antiferromagnetically to each other and contribute only little to the total molecular moment. The spin and orbital moments of the rare ear…

Orbital origin and matrix element effects in the Ag/Si(111)-()R30° Fermi surface

2007

The Fermi surface (FS) of the Ag/Si(1 1 1)-3×3 reconstruction with an excess of Ag has been mapped by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy with polarized light in a wide region of the reciprocal space and with different detection geometries. In contrast to previous results, a strong polarization dependence is observed. Applying the dipole selection rules, it is found that the surface state at the Fermi level, S1 state, has odd symmetry with respect to the mirror plane of the honeycomb-chained triangle structure, indicating that it is mainly derived from Ag 5px and 5py orbitals. This conclusion is revised in the new frame of a inequivalent-triangle structure for the Ag/Si(1 1 1)-3×3 at …
