Trade-off Performance of Optical Nanoantennas for Solar Energy Harvesting Applications
2019
In this paper, the optimum behaviour of optical nanoantennas, in terms of impedance, directivity, available power, and field enhancement, at a resonance frequency of about 350 THz, will be shown. Optimum configurations are obtained by varying nanoantennas geometry in order to maximize the available power, enhancing the electric field in gap proximity and so the absorptivity. Moreover, the simulation results for aluminum nanoantennas on a three-layers substrate, will be reported, and a trade-off performance comparison among different antennas will be discussed. This study can guide both the engineering and the fabrication of plasmonic nanoantennas.
Optically pumped Cs magnetometers enabling a high-sensitivity search for the neutron electric dipole moment
2020
An array of 16 laser-pumped scalar Cs magnetometers was part of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) experiment taking data at the Paul Scherrer Institute in 2015 and 2016. It was deployed to measure the gradients of the experiment's magnetic field and to monitor their temporal evolution. The originality of the array lies in its compact design, in which a single near-infrared diode laser drives all magnetometers that are located in a high-vacuum chamber, with a selection of the sensors mounted on a high-voltage electrode. We describe details of the Cs sensors' construction and modes of operation, emphasizing the accuracy and sensitivity of the magnetic-field readout. We present two app…
Fast-timing study of the l-forbidden 1/2+ -> 3/2+ M1 transition in 129Sn
2016
The levels in 129Sn populated from the β− decay of 129In isomers were investigated at the ISOLDE facility of CERN using the newly commissioned ISOLDE Decay Station (IDS). The lowest 1/2+ state and the 3/2+ ground state in 129Sn are expected to have configurations dominated by the neutron s1/2 (l = 0) and d3/2 (l = 2) single-particle states, respectively. Consequently, these states should be connected by a somewhat slow l-forbidden M1 transition. Using fast-timing spectroscopy we have measured the half-life of the 1/2+ 315.3-keV state, T1/2 = 19(10) ps, which corresponds to a moderately fast M1 transition. Shell-model calculations using the CD-Bonn effective interaction, with standard effect…
Optical and electrical properties of oriented thin films of oligomer containing betaine-type moiety in side chain
2005
Non-linear optical and electrical properties of polymer films obtained by dipole orientation of active units are reported. Novel polar oligomer with N-(indan-1,3-dion-2-yl)pyridinium betaine (IPB) as a side group is studied. Orientation of polar groups in oligomer thin films causes an increase of the photo-induced change of surface potential on irradiation in the region of photo-induced electron transfer (PIET) where the IPB group exhibits a reversible change of the value and sign of the dipole moment. At longer wavelengths, the value of the surface potential of the oligomer may be determined by transport of photogenerated charge carriers.
Comparative tests on different multi-electrode arrays using models in near-surface geophysics
2008
In this paper, the response of different synthetic models to geoelectrical multi-electrode surveys is studied. The models considered are related to two main problems, which are very common in geophysical research regarding hydrogeology and engineering. The first class of models represents buried walls, similar archaeological remains or remains of buried foundations; the other class corresponds to a sea-water intrusion of a fresh water aquifer, which is generally studied in hydrogeophysics. A set of 2D simulations, starting from the synthetic models, was carried out to compare the behaviour of the different arrays when acquiring measurements of electrical resistivity tomography. For each mod…
Review of Particle Physics
2020
The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 2,143 new measurements from 709 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, …
A measurement of the neutron to 199Hg magnetic moment ratio
2014
The neutron gyromagnetic ratio has been measured relative to that of the 199Hg atom with an uncertainty of 0.8 ppm. We employed an apparatus where ultracold neutrons and mercury atoms are stored in the same volume and report the result γn/γHg=3.8424574(30).
First operational experience of HIE-ISOLDE
2016
The High Intensity and Energy ISOLDE project (HIE-ISOLDE)* is a major upgrade of the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The energy range of the post-accelerator will be extended from 2.85 MeV/u to 9.3 MeV/u for beams with A/q = 4.5 (and to 14.3 MeV/u for A/q = 2.5) once all the cryomodules of the superconducting accelerator are in place. The project has been divided into different phases, the first of which (phase 1a) finished in October 2015 after the hardware and beam commissioning were completed**. The physics campaign followed with the delivery of both radioactive and stable beams to two different experimental stations. The characteristics of the beams (energies, intensities, time structure and b…
Resonance in Interacting Induced-Dipole Polarizing Force Fields: Application to Force-Field Derivatives
2009
The Silberstein model of the molecular polarizability of diatomic molecules, generalized by Applequist et al. for polyatomic molecules, is analyzed. The atoms are regarded as isotropically polarizable points located at their nuclei, interacting via the fields of their induced dipoles. The use of additive values for atom polarizabilities gives poor results, in some cases leading to artificial predictions of absorption bands. The molecular polarizability of methane and its derivative are computed. The agreement with experimental mean molecular polarizabilities is within 1–5%. A hypothesis is indispensable for a suitable representation of polarizability derivative.
Photoelectrical Properties and Energetical Structure of Thin Films of Indandione Derivatives
2011
A sandwich type structure of two dimetilaminobenziliden-1,3-indandione (DMABI) derivatives placed between metal electrodes was made to investigate the photoelectrical properties of these derivatives. DMABI is an organic isolator with a wide energy gap and high quantum efficiency of the photogeneration, DMABI derivatives have received also considerable attention because of its large dipole moment and optical nonlinearities. Besides, since it is a photosensitive material, its use in solar systems is very promising. The energy gap of each material and combined system was observed from the spectral dependence of the quantum efficiency of the photoconductivity and results are compared with resul…
