Literacy skills, mathematical skills and educational expectations among Finnish adolescents
2013
This study investigated the connection between educational expectations and skills in spelling, reading fluency and mathematics among Finnish 9th Graders. Connection between comorbidity of reading disability and mathematical disability with educational expectations was also examined. These connections were explored among boys and girls and the effects of parental education were assessed, as well. Cross tabulations and analyses of variance were used as tools for analyses. Spelling, reading fluency and mathematics were connected to educational expectations, with higher skills leading to higher expectations. The largest difference between the educational expectation groups was in mathematics. …

Teacher attitudes towards inclusive education in Finland and Brandenburg, Germany and the issue of extra work
2016
Positive teacher attitudes are considered an important prerequisite for the successful inclusion of students with special educational needs in the mainstream classrooms. This study surveyed teacher opinions about inclusion in Finland (N = 298) and Brandenburg, Germany (N = 163), two educational systems in which the number of students transferred to segregated special education is exceptionally high in international comparison. For the measurement of attitudes, a 10-item scale, teachers’ attitudes towards inclusive education, was used. The results showed that Finnish teachers were more positive towards inclusion than Brandenburg teachers (d = 0.46). The Brandenburg teachers were especially w…
Teacher attitudes in Italy after 40 years of inclusion
2019
In 1977, Italy adopted a policy to fully include students with disabilities in mainstream classrooms. This study surveyed the attitudes of Italian teachers towards inclusive education 40 years after this reform. The data were collected from 153 basic school teachers using the Teachers' Attitudes towards Inclusion Scale (TAIS). The results indicate that the Italian teachers had a high level of commitment to inclusive education. Approximately 90% of the respondents agreed that students with special educational needs should be educated in mainstream classrooms, and only 7% felt that they should be transferred to special education classrooms instead. To improve the quality of inclusive educatio…
Educational research from Tanzania 1998–2008 concerning persons with disabilities: What can we learn?
2014
The global Education For All process and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities have increased the attention given to marginalised and excluded groups showing the need to enhance the education of persons with disabilities. In Sub-Saharan Africa a number of poorly disseminated studies investigate education of persons with disabilities. This paper provides an analysed overview of a decade of Tanzanian studies and reports on the education of persons with disabilities produced from 1998 to 2008. Key findings are highlighted and gaps in the research identified and suggestions are offered for future investigations. The education of persons with disabilities needs to be addre…

2018
Task-oriented reading efficiency : interplay of general cognitive ability, task demands, strategies and reading fluency
2022
AbstractThe associations among readers’ cognitive skills (general cognitive ability, reading skills, and attentional functioning), task demands (easy versus difficult questions), and process measures (total fixation time on relevant and irrelevant paragraphs) was investigated to explain task-oriented reading accuracy and efficiency (number of scores in a given time unit). Structural equation modeling was applied to a large dataset collected with sixth-grade students, which included samples of dysfluent readers and those with attention difficulties. The results are in line with previous findings regarding the dominant role of general cognitive ability in the accuracy of task-oriented reading…
Cognition in Interaction : Challenges in Assessing Persons with Sensory and Multiple disabilities

The assessment situations were video-recorded and analyzed based on sociocultural theories of early interaction, dynamic assessment, and the bodily-tactile modality of cognition.
