Between idealism and realism: the global governance of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament
2014
Why has it not yet been possible to bring the nuclear weapons regime to an end and why are prospects about a nuclear weapon free future so bleak? In this thesis, I analyze both the achievements and failures concerning the global governance of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. In the first chapter, I outline key terms and concepts as well as the historical backgrounds, which are essential for understanding the proliferation of nuclear weapons and the global governance of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. In the second chapter, I examine the efforts on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament of four global key actors within the United Nations family: the General Assembly, …
Opozycja wewnątrzpartyjna w Socjaldemokrtaycznej Partii Niemiec w latach 1980-1982
2016
At the beginning of the 1980s a very serious internal conflict within the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) appeared, which was played out on a few levels. The first one w as the personal level, the second one was the program and ideology level. Both levels, especially in 1981 and in 1982 started to penetrate the strengthening the conflict and the signs of intra - party breakup, and revealing the views and actions of SPD party members, being in open opposition to the official policy of the social liberal government and the social democratic chancellor. Having entered opposition, the party adjusted the party program from above to the expectations of its members and its electorat e, ta…
Improving the Confidence Associated with Passive Total Neutron Counting in the Nuclear Weapon Disarmament Verification Process
2023
Passive total neutron counting is an important tool in the nuclear weapon disarmament monitoring and verification process proposed by the International Partnership for Nuclear Disarmament Verification (IPNDV). In the process, neutron measurements of given treaty accountable items (TAIs) are repeated multiple times in different locations and environments, and the measured neutron count rates are expected to remain unchanged. However, neutrons are heavily scattered in the environment, and the change in location or geometry of the environment can produce varying results in neutron measurements which can deteriorate the confidence of passive total neutron counting. In this paper, we have studie…
Italy in Uncertain Times: Europeanizing Foreign Policy in the Declining Proces of the American Hegemony
2019
Attitudes concerning nuclear war in finland and in the united states
1986
Four hundred seventy residents of Ridgewood, New Jersey, and 493 residents of Jyvaskyla, Finland, were randomly selected and interviewed about their attitudes concerning nuclear war. In both areas, a high proportion of the samples believed that some kind of nuclear incident is likely in the next decade. The vast majority stated that a nuclear war could not be won and that they expected to die in the event of war. About three fourths in both communities seldom discuss nuclear issues with anyone including their own children, and only one fourth of the U.S sample and about one half of the Finnish sample have ever done anything personally to oppose the arms race. About one half of the Americans…
Towards “global zero”: the role of the Holy See in the campaign on nuclear disarmament
2019
On 7 July 2017 at the UN headquarters in New York the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was adopted, the first multilateral legally-binding instrument for nuclear disarmament negotiated in the last twenty years. The very signing of the Treaty must be seen as an extraordinary achievement because it represents a historic step in the seven decades long debate on nuclear weapons. One of the most significant achievements of the decade-long campaign is the engagement of civil society and non-state actors to such a degree that it was recognized through the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). The crucial supporter of the cam…
