The symmetric boundary element method for unilateral contact problems

2008

Abstract On the basis of the boundary integral equation method, in its symmetric formulation, the frictionless unilateral contact between two elastic bodies has been studied. A boundary discretization by boundary elements leads to an algebraic formulation in the form of a linear complementarity problem. In this paper the process of contact or detachment is obtained through a step by step analysis by using generalized (weighted) quantities as the check elements: the detachment or the contact phenomenon may happen when the weighted traction or the weighted displacement is greater than the weighted cohesion or weighted minimum reference gap, respectively. The applications are performed by usin…

High-fidelity analysis of multilayered shells with cut-outs via the discontinuous Galerkin method

2021

Abstract A novel numerical method for the analysis of multilayered shells with cut-outs is presented. In the proposed approach, the shell geometry is represented via either analytical functions or NURBS parametrizations , while generally-shaped cut-outs are defined implicitly within the shell modelling domain via a level set function . The multilayered shell problem is addressed via the Equivalent-Single-Layer approach whereby high-order polynomial functions are employed to approximate the covariant components of the displacement field throughout the shell thickness. The shell governing equations are then derived from the Principle of Virtual Displacements of three-dimensional elasticity an…

Damping effect on the ITER vacuum vessel displacements during slow downward locked and rotating asymmetric vertical displacement events

2018

Abstract In this paper, we present the electromechanical coupled analysis of the ITER vacuum vessel in case of slow downward locked and rotating Asymmetric VDEs. The numerical model for simulating the AVDE includes the asymmetric distribution of the halo currents obtained by a suitable 3D kink perturbation of a slow VDE downward computed by the 2D code DINA. In the case of a rotational AVDE, the rotation frequency of the kink asymmetry has been chosen to be ω = 2π × 5 rad/s. The model includes the mesh of the main passive components facing the plasma. The whole torus (360 degrees) has been discretized. It is shown that the very high complexity of the numerical model can be suitably treated.…

Metal Displacement Deposition: a facile via to grow metal and metal oxide nanostructures

2010

Nanostructured materials have received increasing attention because of their high chemical reactivity that allows an extensive use in many fields, like catalysis, electrosynthesis, sensors, and so on [1]. Taking into account that size plays a fundamental role for the properties of nanostructures, it is of relevant importance for their applications to develop a facile method of synthesis. In our previous works, we have described a template synthesis of metal nanowires through a simple novel route [2-4]. In particular, using a combination of template deposition and metal displacement reaction, we have fabricated pure metal nanowires with a well-defined morphology. This type of template synthe…

Smart Beam Element Approach for LRPH Device

2020

LRPH (Limited Resistance Rigid Perfectly Plastic Hinge) device is a special steel device mainly usable to join beam elements of plane or spatial steel frames covered by patent n. 102017000088597 at the Italian Ministry of Economic Development and identified in the International Patent System with the number PCT/IB2018/055766. In the framework of moment (rigid) connection, the main fundamental innovation of LRPH consists in the mutual independence of its own resistance and stiffness features. The device is constituted by a sequence of three steel elements of limited length bounded by two parallel steel plates joined up with the connected structure elements. The cross-sections of the three st…

Niche filling slows the diversification of Himalayan songbirds.

2013

In Himalayan songbirds, the speciation rate is ultimately set by ecological competition, rather than by the rate of acquisition of reproductive isolation. The beginnings of adaptive radiation and speciation have been widely studied — in Darwin's finches, sticklebacks and cichlid fish, for example — but relatively little is known about what happens next. Specifically, what is the rate-limiting step for the establishment of new species? This seven-year study of the 358 songbird species found on the Himalayan slopes suggests that it is the rates at which new niches are created and occupied that limits diversification, not the rate at which new species form through reproductive isolation. Speci…

Resource competition between sympatric sibling rotifer species

2001

Mechanisms underlying competitive interactions are important in understanding the structure of planktonic communities, particularly the coexistence of similar species. Here we present experimental results of exploitative competition among three sympatric sibling species of the Brachionus plicatilis complex for two differently-sized species of food microalgae. These three rotifer species are to be found in seasonal succession in brackish ponds on the Spanish Mediterranean coast; they can, however, co-occur for long periods. The functional and numerical responses of the three Brachionus species to both food microalgae, although similar, differed. Neither rotifer population growth nor grazing …

Cryptic diversity, niche displacement and our poor understanding of taxonomy and ecology of aquatic microorganisms

2022

AbstractThe analysis of ecological niche is an important task to correctly identify the role exerted by species within ecosystems, to assess their vulnerability, to plan effective measures addressed at fulfilling the postulates of biological conservation, and ultimately to prevent biodiversity loss. However, for the majority of organisms our knowledge about the actual extent of their ecological niche is quite limited. This is especially true for microscopic organisms. Evidence exists that in different geographical areas allegedly conspecific populations can show different, if not antithetical, ecological requirements and not-overlapping ecological niches. This opinion paper discusses whethe…
