Predictive distributions that mimic frequencies over a restricted subdomain

2020

A predictive distribution over a sequence of $$N+1$$ events is said to be “frequency mimicking” whenever the probability for the final event conditioned on the outcome of the first N events equals the relative frequency of successes among them. Exchangeable distributions that exhibit this feature universally are known to have several annoying concomitant properties. We motivate frequency mimicking assertions over a limited subdomain in practical problems of finite inference, and we identify their computable coherent implications. We provide some examples using reference distributions, and we introduce computational software to generate any complete specification desired. Theorems on reducti…

Contribution à l'étude des liaisons optiques atmosphériques : propagation, disponibilité et fiabilité.

2005

In this work we study the fog attenuation in the visible and infrared spectral band related to Free Space Optics (FSO). Based on the Mie scattering theory, fog extinction coefficients for different particle size distributions as a function of wavelength were derived. A simple analytical model allowing the prediction of atmospheric transmission for the 0.69 - 1.55 µm spectral band was developed. This model is valid for advection and convection fog and for visibility range between 50 to 1000 m. This model, implemented into software developed at FT R&D, allows the prediction of the Quality of Service of FSO links. Finally, we performed an experimental study to compare the fog effect on two FSO…

IGR J17503–2636: a candidate supergiant fast X-ray transient

2019

IGR J17503-2636 is a hard X-ray transient discovered by INTEGRAL on 2018 August 11. This was the first ever reported X-ray emission from this source. Following the discovery, follow-up observations were carried out with Swift, Chandra, NICER, and NuSTAR. We report in this paper the analysis and results obtained from all these X-ray data. Based on the fast variability in the X-ray domain, the spectral energy distribution in the 0.5-80 keV energy range, and the reported association with a highly reddened OB supergiant at ~10 kpc, we conclude that IGR J17503-2636 is most likely a relatively faint new member of the supergiant fast X-ray transients. Spectral analysis of the NuSTAR data revealed …

Assessment of the mechanism of elemental incorporation into bivalve shells (Arctica islandica) based on elemental distribution at the microstructural…

2014

Abstract To address the mechanism of elemental incorporation into shells of the bivalve Arctica islandica , we performed two-dimensional elemental mapping of Sr, Mg, and S at a ∼3 μm spatial resolution using electron microprobe. These elemental distributions were precisely compared to the shell microstructure. The Sr distribution was intimately linked to the S concentration and/or shell microstructure. Sr showed a clear annual pattern with higher values at the annual growth lines and lower values in annual growth increments. The Sr and S concentrations were higher near sub-annual growth lines than in the adjacent regions, which were dominated by acicular microstructure (middle shell layer) …

Estimation of fibre orientation from digital images

2001

In this paper, estimation of fibre orientation is studied for fibre systems observable as a blurred greyscale image. The estimation method is based on scaled variograms observed along a set of sampling lines in different directions. The parameters of the orientation distribution are obtained numerically. Simulated data are used to study the statistical properties of the method.

Acquatina Lagoon: a model ecosystem to study community patterns

2013

Acquatina is a small lagoon ecosystem (0.45 km2) located on the Adriatic coast only 5 km north of Lecce (Italy). The lagoon has a freshwater input in the northern part and a connection with the sea at the south edge, being characterised by a latitudinal gradient of salinity and an internal patchiness of habitats. Here, we have used the lagoons as a model to study the influence of these sources of variation on the spatial distribution of macrobenthis and fish fauna, using both taxonomic and on taxonomic descriptors. Results showed a non random distribution of both species and functional traits of macroinvertebrate and fish fauna within the lagoon, despite the relatively small surface area. S…

Mechanism of Anionic Polymerization of (Meth)acrylates in the Presence of Aluminum Alkyls, 6. Polymerization of Primary and Tertiary Acrylates

1998

The kinetics of the polymerization of n-butyl acrylate initiated by lithiated ester enolates in the presence of aluminum alkyls was investigated in toluene and in toluene/Lewis base mixed solvents at −78 °C. In pure toluene, curved time−conversion plots, incomplete monomer conversion, and broad molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≈ 2) are observedin the absence of aluminum alkyls the molecular weight distributions are significantly broader (Mw/Mn > 14). High monomer conversions and narrower molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≈ 1.5) are obtained when using Lewis bases (e.g., methyl pivalate) as cosolvents. The polymerization of tert-butyl acrylate rapidly reaches full monomer conversion…

Kinetics and mechanism of group transfer polymerization of N-butyl acrylate catalyzed by Hgl2 /(CH3 )3 Sil in toluene

1994

The group transfer polymerization (GTP) of n-butyl acrylate (nBuA) using 1-methoxy-1-(trimethylsiloxy)-2-methyl-1-propene (MTS) as an initiator, mercuric iodide (HgI2) as a catalyst in toluene at room temperature gives a very good control of molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution. (Mw/Mn < 1.2). Kinetic studies in this system reveal that this reaction is rather slow, half-lives being in the range of hours. The kinetic order of the apparent rate constant of propagation with respect to initiator and catalyst concentrations were found to be near to unity. However, the first-order time-conversion plots exhibit considerable induction periods. Upon addition of trimethylsilyl io…

Unsupervised low-key image segmentation using curve evolution approach

2013

Low-key images widely exist in imaging-based systems such as space telescopes, medical imaging equipment, machine vision systems. Unsupervised low-key image segmentation is an important process for image analysis or digital measurement in these applications. In this paper, a novel active contour model with the probability density function (PDF) of gamma distribution for image segmentation is proposed. The flexible gamma distribution is used to describe both of the heterogeneous foreground and dark background in a low-key image. Besides, an unsupervised curve initialization method is also designed in this paper, which helps to accelerate the convergence speed of curve evolution. The effectiv…

First Multi-wavelength Campaign on the Gamma-ray-loud Active Galaxy IC 310

2017

The extragalactic VHE gamma-ray sky is rich in blazars. These are jetted active galactic nuclei viewed at a small angle to the line-of-sight. Only a handful of objects viewed at a larger angle are known so far to emit above 100 GeV. Multi-wavelength studies of such objects up to the highest energies provide new insights into the particle and radiation processes of active galactic nuclei. We report the results from the first multi-wavelength campaign observing the TeV detected nucleus of the active galaxy IC 310, whose jet is observed at a moderate viewing angle of 10 deg - 20 deg. The multi-instrument campaign was conducted between 2012 Nov. and 2013 Jan., and involved observations with MAG…
