The Sulcis-Iglesiente district (SW Sardinia, Italy) has been, until recently, one of the most important Italian polymetallic mining areas for the extraction of lead. Epidemiological studies conducted over several decades have indicated this site at high risk of environmental crisis with possible adverse effects on the public health. In the present paper we discuss Pb isotope signatures in human scalp hair and road dust collected from the Sulcis-Iglesiente area in order to trace the exposure of populations to potential Pb sources. Abstract Remote sensing techniques allow monitoring the Earth surface and acquiring worthwhile information that can be used efficiently in agro-hydrological systems. Satellite images associated to computational models represent reliable resources to estimate actual evapotranspiration fluxes, ETa, based on surface energy balance. The knowledge of ETa and its spatial distribution is crucial for a broad range of applications at different scales, from fields to large irrigation districts. After more than fifty years after the landslide of 19 July 1966 which involved most of the historical centre of Agrigento, the paper aims to reflect on the results of the policies implemented by the national government as a result of this dramatic event and on the effect that such policies have had on urban landscape. In particular, the paper focuses on the degradation conditions that characterize both the historical neighbourhood of Rabato-Santa Croce, which was partially abandoned by the inhabitants following the landslide, and the new district of public housing "Villaseta", built outside of the Agrigento city, where the inhabitants - who had lost their homes - were transferred.
A novel renewable system supplying energy and water to the island of Pantelleria

In this paper a thermoeconomic analysis of a novel hybrid Renewable Polygeneration System connected to a district heating and cooling network is presented. The plant is powered simultaneously by solar and geothermal energy and capable to supply electricity, desalinated water, heat and cooling energy. System layout includes a Parabolic Through Collector (PTC) field, geothermal wells, an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) unit and a Multi-Effect Desalination (MED) system. Dynamic simulation of a 4th Generation District Heating network with the presence of prosumers

District Heating Network is identified as a promising technology for the decarbonization of urban areas. Thanks to the surplus of heat available from distributed renewable energy plants, a typical heat consumer of the network could become an energy producer during the day (typically referred to as “prosumer”). Models for thermal grids developed during the years usually assumed a centralized heat production. The increasing presence of prosumers will require accurate dynamic modeling to monitor the changes induced in the thermohydraulic variables of the network.
