The interaction between intermittent renewable energy and the electricity, heating and transport sectors
2012
In a global perspective, it is essential that the world transfers from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources in order to minimise climate change effects. As a part of such transition energy savings are also important, as they can decrease production costs effectively. The nature of such a change is that it has to be implemented on a local level. Energy saving technologies are placed with the demand decrease and renewable energy is typically distributed where the resources are. In some parts of the world, energy savings have resulted in a stabilisation of the energy demands, however in the world as such, demands are still increasing in buildings, transport and industry. Although the deman…
LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT OF SOLAR COMMUNITIES: A SCENARIO ANALYSIS
The study proposes the comparisonof the life cycle performances of two different energy systems aimed at covering the needs of a large mixed-mode community, in Calgary (Canada). The two systems investigated are a“conventional” one, using heat pumps for heating, cooling and domestic hot water, and another one widely deploying solar thermal panels as well as a district heating infrastructure and a borehole seasonal thermal storage. The analysis is based on the LifeCycle Assessment (LCA) methodology and includes the stages of raw materials and energy supply, system manufacturing, use stage of the systems, generation and use of energy on-site, maintenance and components’ substitution, and explo…
A Blockchain-based Platform for Positive Energy Districts
2022
The reduction of climate change effects (mitigation) is now mainly driven by the limitation of CO2 emissions which is currently becoming increasingly necessary and urgent to achieve. In this context, within the past Horizon 2020 program, the Urban Europe Joint Programming Initiative aimed to promote the development and deployment of at least 100 Positive Energy Districts by 2025. The latter are flexible, energy-efficient urban areas or groups of buildings that produce zero net CO2 emissions and actively manage annual renewable energy surplus production at the local or regional level. As they are connected to the electric power system, Positive Energy Districts have the ability to offer flex…
Smart Cities Atlas Western and Eastern Intelligent Communities
2016
The book discusses the concept of the smart city, and is based on a multi-service and multi-sectoral approach to urban planning, including various urban functions and the human capital of cities. The work is divided into three parts. The first is an introductory section which covers definitions, policies and tools used at European level for the development and classification of a smart city. The second presents a selection of examples of Western and Eastern communities, which experienced technologies and strategies that have made them smart. The third describes in detail the main three possible approaches (economical, technological and social) to the smart city concept which are the focus a…
An integrated platform for electrical modeling of microgrids
2012
Aggregates of loads and generators working coordinated, called microgrids, are new entities appearing at distribution level. In this paper, an integrated platform for energy modeling of microgrids is proposed. The platform allows the evaluation of heat and electrical energy balance terms and of the steady state features of the distribution system supplying the grid. The interface is friendly and allows the positioning of different items, such as co-generators, photovoltaic and wind units, Electric Vehicles parking lots and buildings. The platform is built in Matlab while the interface in Java. Each component of the model can be placed using a CAD facility and each ‘node’ is characterized by…
Tripolis on the Maeander under Roman Rule (Cent. 2nd B.C. - 3rd A.D.): History and Epigraphy
2017
This paper aims at depicting the historical and administrative geography of Tripolis on the Maeander (Lydia, Anatolia) within the Roman province Asia since its institution (129 B.C.) up to the provincial reform of Diocletian (late 3rd cent. A.D.). Tripolis traditionally belonged to the south-eastern part of Lydia, which in the Lykos Valley, and especially along the Maeander’s stream, met and mingled with Caria and Phrygia. The changes of names have an important historical meaning for the city, since the Hellenistic age (Apollonia) up to the Civil Wars of the late 1st cent. B.C. (Antoniopolis, Tripolis). Three wars can be considered as turning points for the Greek cities in Roman Asia: the A…
Contatti culturali, identità e popolamento nel territorio imerese
2016
The Family Business in the Fishing District of Mazara del Vallo. Critical issues and Dynamics
2016
This work-in-progress paper presents the early results of a survey aiming to understand the relationship between family firms and regional development in contemporary economic, by examining the negative effects of “family inertia” on the acquisition of dynamic capabilities necessary to enhance competitiveness and establish inter-firm cooperation strategies in family businesses in the context of an industrial district. Family firms are acknowledged for playing an important role in the creation, organization, and allocation of regional resources and in regional processes. Industrial districts are recognized as fertile fields for the development of inter-firm interrelations that may produce po…
La mancata agglomerazione del settore lapideo di Custonaci, inizio della crisi 2007-2017
2017
This paper analyzes the stone sector in Sicily in the period 2007-2009, with particular reference to the system of Custonaci, one of the representative sites of the Sicilian marble. The sector has gone through a deep crisis aggravated by structural elements such as the lack of coordination between operators. The research carries out an analysis on the main structural, economic and financial characteristics of a representative sample of 25 companies in the area in order to verify the existence of a consolidated network of enterprises and the applicability, to this reality, of A district theoretical model. This paper indicates the need for the creation of a network system between companies an…
