The challenge of a place-based and network approach to the development in the territories
2016
This paper investigates the role of research networks inside local development processes to increase the competitiveness of underdeveloped territories. This paper, within the scope of local development theory, aims to describe the state of the art on the regional research systems resulting largely from programs co-financed between 2000 and 2013, with which the various regions are preparing to engage in programming for the period 2014-2020. The extent of consistency between the objectives of sectorial specialization set by policies previously or currently implemented and those in the planning phase (S3) is assessed, as is their connection with existing territorial specializations at a region…
LA COMPLESSA STRADA VERSO L’INNOVAZIONE NEI TERRITORI
2015
This paper provides a framework on regional research systems, through which, different regions are preparing to engage in program- ming period 2014 – 2020. It will also cover the regions’ investments in the co-financed programs between 2000 and 2013. Particular attention is dedicated to those projects that, in the specific objectives or specific actions have referred to high-tech districts, techno- logical platforms, clusters, innovation centers, science or technology parks and networks. It then carries out two verifications: firstly, of the degree of consistency between policies and implementation and ongoing design (S3) and secondly of their connection with the existing territorial specia…
Experiencing the Smart City Concept: the Challenge of Intelligent District
2016
Ex-Ante Business Model Evaluation Methods: A Proposal of Improvement and Applicability
2019
[EN] Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to choose the best method for ex ante business model evaluation, improve it and provide a framework to put it into practice. Design/Methodology/Approach: After an in-depth review, we chose the best method for ex ante business model evaluation, improved this method, and applied it to a real case study in which business models had been proposed for a Sustainable Smart District project. Findings: We analysed existing ex ante business model evaluation methods, justifying our choice of the best one. We improved this key question-based method by combining classic management tools and a new, promising procedure. We finally found a strong tool to improve b…
Un approccio place-based per lo sviluppo di sistemi regionali di ricerca in Italia
2017
This work has three objectives. The first is the creation of an extensive mapping of technological districts, innovation poles, excellence research centres, laboratories and science parks in the Italian regions. The second is about monitoring, employing data from Open Cohesion, the state of the art of regional and national programs that aim at building local research networks and innovation networks. The third objective is to compare the sectoral priorities chosen by Regions according to their Smart Specialization Strategy (S3) with the existing sectors in their research networks. Finally, the study explores to what extent the presence of the industrial districts in the regions has facilita…
Structure and evolution of a European Parliament via a network and correlation analysis
2016
We present a study of the network of relationships among elected members of the Finnish parliament, based on a quantitative analysis of initiative co-signatures, and its evolution over 16 years. To understand the structure of the parliament, we constructed a statistically validated network of members, based on the similarity between the patterns of initiatives they signed. We looked for communities within the network and characterized them in terms of members' attributes, such as electoral district and party. To gain insight on the nested structure of communities, we constructed a hierarchical tree of members from the correlation matrix. Afterwards, we studied parliament dynamics yearly, wi…
On How Firms Located in an Industrial District Profit from Knowledge Spillovers: Adoption of an Organic Structure and Innovation Capabilities
2011
The canonical approach argues that firms located in industrial districts enjoy advantages for both innovation and performance as a consequence of the exceptionally strong knowledge spillovers that flow freely and spontaneously within them. However, diffusion of shared competences is not as easy and free as postulated in the literature. Using the resource-based view, we study whether clustered firms perform better than non-clustered firms, by providing empirical evidence that location of firms in an industrial district does not directly create innovation capabilities or economic rents. This research question is important because it enables us to better understand how firms benefit from this …

Changes in Spatial and Sectoral Patterns of Employment in Ile-de-France, 1978-97
2006
This paper investigates the spatial distribution of employment in the region of Ile-de-France in 1978 and 1997. Exploratory spatial data analysis is used to identify employment centres and a sectoral analysis of the central business district (CBD) and sub-centres is performed. The results highlight a process of suburbanisation of employment in Ile-de-France between 1978 and 1997. A more polarised space emerges in 1997 than in 1978, with several employment centres specialised in different activities. Moreover, even if the spatial influence of the CBD declines over the study period, the CBD maintains its economic leadership by concentrating a large variety of high-order producer services.
Employment Density in Ile-de-France: Evidence from Local Regressions
2009
In recent decades, cities have experienced a particularly intense phase of urban sprawl. Urban growth has been characterized by the spatial concentration of population in urban areas and the concomitant extension of those urban areas (Nechyba and Walsh 2004). Urban sprawl has also been accompanied by major reorganizations of urban areas with regard to the location choices of households and firms. More specifically, most cities in developed countries have experienced several waves of suburbanization of economic activities: “an economic definition of suburbanization is a reduction in the fraction of a metropolitan area’s population or employment that is located in the central city (correspond…
