Analysis of the epiphytic bryophyte diversity of Sicily
2009
Sicilian epiphytic bryophyte diversity, based on literature and unpublished data, is assessed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The total number of taxa found on trees or shrubs is 133 (116 mosses and 17 liverworts). Among them, 38 are customary epiphytic, 21 cortico-saxicolous, 13 are indifferent and 61 occasionally epiphytic taxa. The most represented families are Orthotrichaceae (19.1%), which consists above all of several typically corticicolous species, Pottiaceae (19.1%) and Brachytheciaceae (12.6%) which both include many taxa that mainly colonize rock or ground substrates. From the chorological point of view, temperate taxa (33.8%) prevail, followed by oceanic-Mediterranean tax…
Biodiversity and technological potential of wild lactic acid bacteria from raw cows' milk
2009
To study lactic acid bacteria (LAB) biodiversity and to evaluate their potential for use in dairy applications, eight raw cows' milk batches were sampled from five dairy factories located in different areas of the Trentino region during winter and summer milkings. A total of 370 (Gram-positive and catalase-negative) isolates were first molecularly analysed by means of randomly amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR). After strain differentiation (124 profiles), LAB were genetically identified at species level. The most frequently isolated LAB were lactococci, enterococci and streptococci. Lactobacilli, leuconostocs and pediococci were found at low levels. All strains …
Bioindicatori della qualità del suolo
2012

Alien Insect Impact on Cultural Heritage and Landscape: an Underestimated Problem
2017
The impact of alien invasive insects on cultural heritage and landscapes is very often neglected; even though, more than 50% of species that threaten cultural heritage in Europe are of exotic origin. In addition they are more aggressive. Several examples and a description, are given of the most dangerous alien insects present in heritage sites that constitute a risk for the conservation of cultural property: museum collections, libraries, archives and historic buildings. Globalisation has increased this phenomenon but traces of the accidental introduction of insect pests have occurred since Roman times. The paper discusses the need to implement an estimation of the costs that arise from the…
