The Spirit of Inquiry and the Reflected Self: Theological Anthropology and the Sociology of Knowledge

1978

The general aim of an anthropology may be said to be the determination of man's characteristics in his environment. In social anthropology, however, the trend has been to emphasise the environment at the expense of man. The present article argues that a similar tendency prevails in theology's typical description of man as a ‘hearer’ of the Word of God and finds illuminating parallels in Berger and Luckmann's sociology of knowledge. The failure of these two authors to maintain a true dialectic between individual creativity and the formative influences of society appears in connection with their view of human inquiry. By developing George Kelly's model of man as an inquiring scientist, the ar…

Losing an Unexpected Throne: Deposing Second Sons of the Stuart Dynasty

2017

Two second sons of the Stuart dynasty who came as unexpected heirs to the throne lost their crown in depositions . Both of these kings, Charles I and James II , had a strong belief in a personal kingship over loyal subjects, which was at odds with the English concept of King-in-Parliament and the possibilities for subjects to participate in the rule of the kingdom. Charles I and James II lacked the natural confidence of born kings, and both tried to overcome this deficiency by overemphasizing their royal dignity. In doing so, they never realized that the generally accepted idea of a divine right of kings was to be articulated and represented, but not implemented in politics.

Discussion of “Laboratory and field calibration of the Diviner 2000 probe in two types of soil” by J. Haberland, PhD, R. Galvez, C. Kremer, PhD, and …

2014

The authors deal with the quite interesting and actual problem of Diviner 2000 capacitance probe calibration and present some field and laboratory data obtained on two different layers (0-0.26 cm and 0.26-0.50 cm) of the same soil profile, characterized by different textural class. The importance of site-specific calibration of sensors used to monitor soil or plant water status assumes a particular relevance in semi-arid environments where the application of precision irrigation represents an appropriate management strategy aimed to achieve high values of water use efficiency (Cammalleri et al., 2013). Moreover in clay soils, physical properties are strongly influenced by soil water content…

“She Shuddered on her Throne and Made high Olympus Quake.” Causes, Effects and Meanings of the Divine Nemesis in Homer

2015

This article aims at exploring the Homeric gods’ sensitivity to a particular kind of indig- nation that is expressed in the Homeric po- ems by the term nemesis and by the verbal forms arising from it. My purpose is to an- alyse the passages that allow us to establish the causes of divine nemesis towards the mortals and the gods themselves, as well as their effects. This survey also represents an opportunity for investigating the relation between the attribution of emotions to the Greek gods and the anthropomorphic repre- sentation of the divine.

From the Ultimate God to the Virtual God: Post-Ontotheological Perspectives on the Divine in Heidegger, Badiou, and Meillassoux

2014

The Heideggerian account of the ontotheological constitution of Western metaphysics has been extremely influential for contemporary philosophy of religion and for philosophical perspectives on theology and the divine. This paper introduces and contrasts two central strategies for approaching the question of the divine in a non- or post-ontotheological manner. The first and more established approach is that of post-Heideggerian hermeneutics and deconstruction, inspired by Heidegger’s suggestion of a “theology without the word ‘being’” and by his later notions of an “ultimate god” and of “divinities” as one of the four axes of the fourfold (Geviert). Here, the divine is no longer articulated …

The ‘wonderful story ’constitutes an effective resource that myth provides to ancient societies to articulate and explain man’s relationship with nature and the presence or absence of divine protection.

Problematics of Bonds in Hugh MacDiarmid's Poetry

2012

Hugh MacDiarmid is considered the most important Scottish poet of the 20th century. He is mostly celebrated for the Scots lyrics he wrote in the 1920s and his long poem A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle, published in 1926. Because of their fragmentation, the poems of the Thirties, most of which were part of the unpublished project Mature Art, and In Memoriam James Joyce (1955), have not attracted the same critical attention. However, they represent the culmination of a very complex stylistic crisis that this study offers to analyse thanks to the question of bonds, especially problematic bonds. The poetry portrays humanity torn by social division, treason and death, but it deals with loss too…

Indirect estimation of calibration equation parameters for Sentek Diviner 2000 capacitance probe by means of soil physical properties

2014

Measurements of soil water content (SWC) are often used for irrigation scheduling. Accurate monitoring of SWC is necessary, for example, to identify the exact irrigation timing and the amount of water volume to supply according to the crop requirement. The use of capacitance probes, measuring the apparent soil dielectric permittivity, indirectly related to soil water status, have been increasing during the last decade, as proved by the numerous researches carried out to determine, for different soil types, site-specific calibration relationships between SWC and the scaled frequency (SF) measured by the sensor. However, for swelling/shrinking clay soils, there is a lack of knowledge on how t…
