Unificación de enseñanzas relacionadas con el Tratamiento Digital de Señales en la Universitat de València

2011

Teaching Digital Signal Processing (DSP) at the University of Valencia takes place in several subjects with a great overlap in contents. This work proposes an approach to unify DSP contents, so that it is possible to extract the contents corresponding with each subject. Moreover, the proposal is based on a repository that contains the common contents; the repository is hosted on a virtual learning environment, being Moodle and DotLRN the two platforms under study. The final implemented solution consists in an HTMLrepository formed by a number of basic teaching units. These basic units are packaged in a standard IMS-CP format, making up the materials of the different subjects.

Data Banks and Multivariate Statistics in Physical Anthropology

1984

In recent decades, the fields of administration and economy, the press and - last but not least - the sciences have been characterized by an “explosion of knowledge”, and, as a consequence, by the problem of managing the rapidly increasing mass of information. It has been estimated that knowledge doubles each five years, and even that the interval of doubling seems to decrease. The main response to this challenge are computerized and structured data collections called data banks. “Data banks are systems of data collections which are organized according to logical and/or formal criteria; they should make it possible to reproduce the data of the total collection arranged according to differen…

Graduate of Riga Polytechnic Institute, Engineer and Athlete Mārtiņš Stabiņš

2020

The aim of the article is to reveal the performance of Mārtiņš Stabiņš, a graduate of the Faculty of Automation and Computer Technology (1972; FACT) of Riga Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in the profession of engineer and high achievements in sports, becoming a Latvian champion in athletics several times, to reveal his daily life during his study years in the 1960s–1970s. Despite the fact that M. Stabiņš’ sports achievements have already described, this article summarizes his successes as well as reveals hitherto little-known and unpublished documents about his family, daily life, developments and interests. This is the first major research on the life of an engineer and athlete during seven …

Overview of Other Results and Open Problems

2014

This chapter presents an overview of results related to error control methods, which were not considered in previous chapters. In the first part, we discuss possible extensions of the theory exposed in Chaps. 3 and 4 to nonconforming approximations and certain classes of nonlinear problems. Also, we shortly discuss some results related to explicit evaluation of modeling errors. The remaining part of the chapter is devoted to a posteriori estimates of errors in iteration methods. Certainly, the overview is not complete. A posteriori error estimation methods are far from having been fully explored and this subject contains many unsolved problems and open questions, some of which we formulate …

Combining Inter-Subject Modeling with a Subject-Based Data Transformation to Improve Affect Recognition from EEG Signals

2019

Existing correlations between features extracted from Electroencephalography (EEG) signals and emotional aspects have motivated the development of a diversity of EEG-based affect detection methods. Both intra-subject and inter-subject approaches have been used in this context. Intra-subject approaches generally suffer from the small sample problem, and require the collection of exhaustive data for each new user before the detection system is usable. On the contrary, inter-subject models do not account for the personality and physiological influence of how the individual is feeling and expressing emotions. In this paper, we analyze both modeling approaches, using three public repositories. T…

Cultural institutions as agents of urban and community regeneration in the (post-)pandemic city. The case of the «Laboratorio Zen Insieme» in Palermo

2022

Although all cities in the world have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, its impacts on the territories, yet to be understood, are unevenly distributed, revealing extremely varied imbalances depending on the places. However, it is clear that the virus and its variants have aggravated pre-existing socio-spatial inequalities, creating new ones and bringing attention back to those implications between space, planning, public health and citizenship that are at the origins of contemporary urbanism. In a reference framework in which the crisis is globalized but unequal and in the absence of a welfare system capable of responding to the urgencies of the most marginalized social contexts and g…

Olsen 2018Settore ICAR/21 - UrbanisticaSettore M-GGR/01 - GeografiaSacco and Blessi 2009). In the current (post-) pandemic context and through the lens of a southern European perspective the purpose of this article is to critically reflect about the role of culture as possible vehicle of urban and community regeneration. In particular we will focus on the activities of the no profit organization «Laboratorio Zen Insieme» in ZEN2 one of the last large popular and peripheral neighborhoods built in Palermo at the end of 80s in order to explore and understand how cultural practices work as agent of urban and social transformation capable of addressing emerging issues especially in the pandemic scenario we are experiencing. Thecasestudy has been conducted through analysis of documents participative observations (Honer and Hitzler 2015) and qualitative in-depth interviews with key actors involved in the conception organization and management of the activities carried out by Laboratorio Zen Insieme with representatives of local institutions and non-formal conversations with participants of the workshops heldin the neighborhood. The experience we narrate finds that cultural practices have re-conceptualized their design and functions as strategies of urban and community regeneration and at the same time have contributed to answer to emergent issues in developing proximity and local based strategies facing up to problems inherent civil rights educationalpoverty socio-spatial justice and have changed the image and identity of urban places they inhabit. In this sense the research provides a framework for development of strategies and legitimization for cultural practices and a point of discussionabouttheirrolein urban development.Although all cities in the world have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic its impacts on the territories yet to be understood are unevenly distributed revealing extremely varied imbalances depending on the places. However it is clear that the virus and its variants have aggravated pre-existing socio-spatial inequalities creating new ones and bringing attention back to those implications between space planning public health and citizenship that are at the origins of contemporary urbanism. In a reference framework in which the crisis is globalized but unequal and in the absence of a welfare system capable of responding to the urgencies of the most marginalized social contexts and groups a response to the new social and individual needs has been offered by cultural institutions that play a role of territorial agency often independently or in the absence of political institutions. Far from the idea of entertainment and divertissement it is in fact increasingly clear how the practices of cultural innovation experimenting with various forms of action and participation can in some cases play a fundamental role in the processes of social cohesion and community building representing an antidote to the worsening of the phenomena of marginalization and socio-spatial inequalities within cities and territories (Colantonio and Dixon 2011

Average-case analysis in an elementary course on algorithms

1998

Average-case algorithm analysis is usually viewed as a tough subject by students in the first courses in Computer Science. Traditionally, these topics are fully developed in advanced courses with a clear mathematical orientation. The work presented here is not an alternative to this, but, it presents the analysis of algorithms (and average-case in particular) adapted to the mathematical background of students in an elementary course on Algorithms or Programming by using some specially selected examples.
