Multisensory discourse resources : decolonizing ethnographic research practices
2020
Researchers have attempted to address the intersection of multisensory and multimodal discourse practices from an interactional perspective. This study argues for the value of experiential, non-interactional multisensory discourse resources and proposes a conceptual framework of multisensory discourse resources to bridge visual and family language ideology ethnography. A year-long ethnographic case study of three Nepalese families (immigrant and transmigrant), consisting of 150 h of observational data triangulated with qualitative interviews, posed two questions: (1) How do transnational families, in the homescape, use multisensory discourse resources to provide cultural, national, religiou…

«Desmontando» a Calderón: la dramaturgia crítica de Francisco Ruiz Ramón
2017
The study examines the critical point of view and research methodology that was applied by Francisco Ruiz Ramon (1930-2015) to analyze Spanish Theater, from its excellent Historia del teatro espanol (1967) to his latest research focused on Pedro Calderon de la Barca (1600-1681) and, especially, in its review as a contemporary classic in the history of European theater. To do it, the study pays particular attention to Ruiz Ramon’s biographical and academic circumstances and the critical currents that inspired its «Calderon reading» model, which contributed decisively in the renewal of Golden Age Theather historiography
Political Uses of History in Spain
2001
History has always been a target of political exploitation. Two opposed conception of Spanish history confronted one another throughout most of the twentieth century. Whith no tradition of memory/history or hegemonic national consciousness, the years of dictatorship accentuated the old conflict. The way in which the transition to democracy took place encouraged the forgetting of our most recent past. We are now witnessing an increasing politicization of history in a way less evident than before. Historical commemorations and revisions present an interested picture of normality that constrasts with the pessimism of yesteryear.
Planning teachers' professional development for global education 1
2004
Group consultation was used with educators at different stages of their careers as an innovative research tool in the development of both pre- and in-service teacher training for world citizenship education. The themes identified by the teachers were quite broad, and included the need for more educational philosophy, varied educational methodology and the skills to collaborate with other teachers in order to create a “culture of consultation in schools”. Involving teachers in the field was found to be essential in identifying critical areas for training, as well as for appropriate means and implementation. A survey of seminar participants (n 35) showed new paths for development in the area …

From Complement to Motor: The Changing Role of Leisure and Tourism in Local Development Strategies. The Case of the Recovery and Valorisation of Cult…
2012
In the Fordist society, the productive activity focused development strategies, considering the role of leisure and tourism as “complementary” productive activities. The consolidation of post-productivism since the decade of 1990s has caused profound changes in individual and collective values and priorities. These have seen the introduction of a radically different conception about the role of leisure and tourism in the vital programming and, consequently, in the strategies of companies, organisations and governments. This paper provides a discussion of the principles of local development and the, more and more, central function of leisure and tourism in regional development strategies, th…
‘I shared the joy’: sport-related social support and communality on Instagram
2020
The popularity of sharing photographs on digital platforms has increased significantly due to the communicative affordances of mobile media and the emergence of photo-sharing applications, such as Instagram. In this paper, we examine how social support and communality can be built and reinforced through digital visual communication. We focus especially on photo sharing in the context of recreational climbing and trail running. In a qualitative study with Finnish climbers and runners, we asked what meanings sports practitioners ascribe to the practice of sharing and observed how they communicate these meanings through photographs. The results indicate that different types of visual content b…
