Adapting RRI public engagement indicators to the Spanish scientific and innovation context: a participatory methodology based on AHP and content anal…
2022
The paradigm proposed by Responsible Research and Innovation in the European Commission policy discourse identifies Public Engagement as a key area for exchange and dialogue among multiple actors following an inclusive and participatory process. Two definite set of indicators have already arisen at European level to monitor Public Engagement activities in the Science and Innovation realm. Our study aims to propose a deliberative participatory process, which involves selected stakeholders, for the adaptation of the European indicators to the specific Spanish scientific and innovation context. The methodological procedure is of exploratory nature and will be based in a combination of, on the …
REDU : revista de docencia universitaria
2014
Drift Time Measurement in the ATLAS Liquid Argon Electromagnetic Calorimeter using Cosmic Muons
2010
The ionization signals in the liquid argon of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter are studied in detail using cosmic muons. In particular, the drift time of the ionization electrons is measured and used to assess the intrinsic uniformity of the calorimeter gaps and estimate its impact on the constant term of the energy resolution. The drift times of electrons in the cells of the second layer of the calorimeter are uniform at the level of 1.3% in the barrel and 2.8% in the endcaps. This leads to an estimated contribution to the constant term of (0.29-0.04+0.05)% in the barrel and (0.54-0.04+0.06)% in the endcaps. The same data are used to measure the drift velocity of ionization electrons …
Characterization of basic drug–human serum protein interactions by capillary electrophoresis
2006
Drug-protein interactions are determining factors in the therapeutic, pharmacodynamic and toxicological drug properties. The affinity of drugs towards plasmatic proteins is apparently well established in bibliography. Albumin (HSA) especially binds neutral and negatively charged compounds; alpha(1)-acid glycoprotein (AGP) binds many cationic drugs, lipoproteins bind to nonionic and lipophilic drugs and some anionic drugs while globulins interact inappreciably with the majority of drugs. In this paper, the characterization of the interaction between cationic drugs, beta-blockers and phenotiazines towards HSA, AGP, and both HSA + AGP mixtures of proteins under physiological conditions by CE-f…
Comparison of Dialysis and Dispersion Methods for In Vitro Release Determination of Drugs from Multilamellar Liposomes
2008
The aim of these studies was to compare dialysis and dispersion methods for determining in vitro release of propranolol, metoprolol, pindolol, and atenolol from multilamellar liposomes. Multilamellar vesicles (MLV) were prepared using hydrogenated soy-lecithin phospholipon 90H (Ph 90H) as the primary lipid. The same volume of pH 7.4 phosphate buffered saline was used as a receptor medium for both methods. Samples were withdrawn, and drug concentration was determined using HPLC. All drug-containing liposomes exhibited an initial burst release followed by a slower rate of release. The rate and extent of drug release from MLV was dependent on the physicochemical properties of the drug. For all…
Adjuncts for ovarian stimulation: when do we adopt “orphan indications” for approved drugs?
2009
Several drugs, shown to be safe for other uses, have proven to be highly effective adjuncts for ovarian stimulation. The authors evaluate these "orphan" indications and make recommendations so that more patients will benefit from their use.
Diversity in Ensemble Feature Selection
2003
Ensembles of learnt models constitute one of the main current directions in machine learning and data mining. Ensembles allow us to achieve higher accuracy, which is often not achievable with single models. It was shown theoretically and experimentally that in order for an ensemble to be effective, it should consist of high-accuracy base classifiers that should have high diversity in their predictions. One technique, which proved to be effective for constructing an ensemble of accurate and diverse base classifiers, is to use different feature subsets, or so-called ensemble feature selection. Many ensemble feature selection strategies incorporate diversity as a component of the fitness funct…
Inferring slowly-changing dynamic gene-regulatory networks
2015
Dynamic gene-regulatory networks are complex since the interaction patterns between their components mean that it is impossible to study parts of the network in separation. This holistic character of gene-regulatory networks poses a real challenge to any type of modelling. Graphical models are a class of models that connect the network with a conditional independence relationships between random variables. By interpreting these random variables as gene activities and the conditional independence relationships as functional non-relatedness, graphical models have been used to describe gene-regulatory networks. Whereas the literature has been focused on static networks, most time-course experi…
On the metric properties of dynamic time warping
1987
Recently, some new and promising methods have been proposed to reduce the number of Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) computations in Isolated Word Recognition. For these methods to be properly applicable, the verification of the Triangle Inequality (TI) by the DTW-based Dissimilarity Measure utilized seems to be an important prerequisite.
Trading off accuracy for efficiency by randomized greedy warping
2016
Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) is a widely used distance measure for time series data mining. Its quadratic complexity requires the application of various techniques (e.g. warping constraints, lower-bounds) for deployment in real-time scenarios. In this paper we propose a randomized greedy warping algorithm for finding similarity between time series instances. We show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the simple greedy approach and also provides very good time series similarity approximation consistently, as compared to DTW. We show that the Randomized Time Warping (RTW) can be used in place of DTW as a fast similarity approximation technique by trading some classification accuracy for ve…
