Hormone replacement therapy improves contractile function and myonuclear organization of single fibres from postmenopausal monozygotic female twin pa…
2013
Ageing is associated with a decline in muscle mass and strength leading to increased physical dependency in old age. Postmenopausal women experience a greater decline than men of similar age in parallel with the decrease in female sex steroid hormone production. We recruited six monozygous female twin pairs (55–59 years old) where only one twin pair was on hormone replacement therapy (HRT use = 7.8 ± 4.3 years) to investigate the association of HRT with the cytoplasmic volume supported by individual myonuclei (myonuclear domain (MND) size,) together with specific force at the single fibre level. HRT use was associated with a significantly smaller (∼27%; P < 0.05) mean MND size in muscle fib…

Domini collettivi, forme di autogoverno per la gestione degli ecosistemi e lo sviluppo locale
2020
One of the most ancient forms of self-government of environmental systems is that relating to the management of civic uses and collective lands, in which a specific local community controls and manages sustainable resources (fields, pastures, woods, etc.) sustainably and efficiently. The paper aims to briefly retrace the salient stages of the history of collective domains, and to explore their value as “goods that are produced by long co-evolutionary processes between human settlement and environment” (Magnaghi 2015, 139) highlighting the appearance of complex socio-ecological systems (SES). Finally, using the theory developed by Elinor Ostrom to analyze the sustainability of SES (Ostrom 20…
ISTehnology – integrated Approach to IS Development and Benefits of its Using
2011
The system ISTechnology and benefits of its usage are analyzed in the paper. ISTechnology provides an integrated approach to business modeling and development of information systems. The system consists of a meta-model and applications. The meta-model enables defining of a platform independent business model of the organization. The applications provide the definition and interpretation of the business model. Interpretation of the business model provides functionality of the information system in the selected platform. The lessons learned confirm that the development and maintenance cost of information systems can be significantly reduced by use of the ISTechnology. The paper describes addi…
Cooperative sound design: a protocol analysis
2016
Formal protocol analysis and linkographic representations are well-established approaches in design cognition studies, in the visual domain. We introduce the method and tools in the auditory domain, by analysing a case of collaborative sound design. We show how they can provide relevant qualitative and quantitative information about the efficiency of the creative process.
Ultra Reliable Communication in 5G Networks: A Dependability-based Availability Analysis in the Space Domain
2017
Master's thesis Information- and communication technology IKT591 - University of Agder 2017 As our daily life is becoming more dependent on wireless and mobile services, seamless network connectivity is of utmost importance. Wireless networks are expected to handle the growing demand for applications which require higher capacity, without failure. Therein, wireless connectivity is regarded as an essential requirement for a wide range of applications in order to support exible and cost-e ective services. As part of the fth generation (5G) communication paradigm, ultra reliable communication (URC) is envisaged as an important technology pillar for providing anywhere and anytime services to en…
Collaborative Design Rational and Social Creativity in Cultures of Participation
2011
The rise in social computing has facilitated a shift from consumer cultures, focused on producing finished media to be consumed passively, to cultures of participation, where people can access the means to participate actively in personally meaningful problems. These developments represent unique and fundamental opportunities and challenges for rethinking and reinventing design rationale and creativity, as people acclimate to taking part in computer-mediated conversations of issues and their solutions. Grounded in our long-term research exploring these topics, this paper articulates arguments, describes and discusses conceptual frameworks and system developments (in the context of three cas…
Theoretical approaches and frameworks to language maintenance and shift research : a critical review
2019
This article presents a critical overview of theoretical approaches and frameworks to language maintenance and shift research in the area of immigrant languages. It covers the underlying principles of these frameworks and assesses their advantages and shortcomings. The article argues that the field’s theoretical orientations have shifted recently, with a greater emphasis on understanding language maintenance and shift as a dynamic process involving complex interrelationships between space and time. These new trends and new areas of research in relation to language maintenance and shift are highlighted and discussed in different parts of the article. The article concludes by calling on the s…
New Invariant Domain Preserving Finite Volume Schemes for Compressible Flows
2021
We present new invariant domain preserving finite volume schemes for the compressible Euler and Navier–Stokes–Fourier systems. The schemes are entropy stable and preserve positivity of density and internal energy. More importantly, their convergence towards a strong solution of the limit system has been proved rigorously in [9, 11]. We will demonstrate their accuracy and robustness on a series of numerical experiments.
A Fixed Domain Approach in Shape Optimization Problems with Neumann Boundary Conditions
2008
Fixed domain methods have well-known advantages in the solution of variable domain problems, but are mainly applied in the case of Dirichlet boundary conditions. This paper examines a way to extend this class of methods to the more difficult case of Neumann boundary conditions.
