Policy uncertainty and foreign direct investment
2020
While foreign direct investment (FDI) is known to be the most stable type of international capital flows, it may be particularly susceptible to heightened uncertainty because of its high fixed costs. We investigate the effect of domestic policy uncertainty on FDI inflows into 16 host countries using the OECD bilateral FDI panel data set and the economic policy uncertainty index from 1985 to 2013. The bilateral structure of the data enables us to disentangle pull factors of FDI from its push factors, thereby obtaining a cleaner causal identification of the higher domestic policy uncertainty effect. To alleviate remaining endogeneity concerns, we use the timing of “exogenous” elections as an …
Indonesian domestic workers in Singapore: strategies for increasing income and building up savings
2014
The following essay studies the strategies and practices applied by Indonesian domestic workers in Singapore in order to accumulate money. This is done by presenting the background situation, especially regarding female labor migration from Indonesia to other countries, and examining the specific income conditions experienced by domestic workers in Singapore. The particular focus of this essay is on gaining a deeper understanding of how the women act within a restrictive framework, i.e. identifying their legal and illegal strategies for increasing their regular income and their “negative” income strategies and transnational strategies for building up savings.
Costs and benefits of inflammation in host-parasite relationships
2016
Host-parasite interactions are characterized by trade-offs that involve both plastic and microevolutionary responses. On one hand, while immunity is essential to fight parasites, it can also cause damage to the host, leading to autoimmunity and inflammatory diseases. On the other hand, parasites have to cope with the immune environnement provided by the host. This raises the question of the costs and benefits of the inflammatory response for the two partners of the interaction. With different experimental and literature-based approaches, I showed that immunopathology is a trait that likely persists because of the immediate benefits of the immune response in terms of protection against paras…

Essential oils from three Algerian medicinal plants (Artemisia campestris, Pulicaria arabica, and Saccocalyx satureioides) as new botanical insectici…
2020
Medicinal and aromatic plants represent an outstanding source of green active ingredients for a broad range of real-world applications. In the present study, we investigated the insecticidal potential of the essential oils obtained from three medicinal and aromatic plants of economic importance in Algeria, Artemisia campestris, Pulicaria arabica, and Saccocalyx satureioides. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to study the essential oil chemical compositions. The three essential oils were tested against a mosquito vectoring filariasis and arboviruses, i.e., Culex quinquefasciatus, a fly pest acting also as pathogens vector, Musca domestica, and an agricultural…
L’altro architetto dei Cassina. Colin Glennie a casa di Adele
2020
Job seeker's spatial equilibrium in a fuzzy mathematical framework
1990
This paper incorporates complex behavior in a job seeking strategy model. Since the state of information is imperfect, a job seeker faces an imprecise labor market. His behavior is fuzzy and variable. It is shown how this complex behavior can be described by fuzzy subsets theory and bifurcation analysis. The latter examines the discontinuous phenomena. Then it is proved that a job seeker’s fuzzy equilibrium with a spatial constraint exists.
Geographical economics and regional integration (what lessons for Central and Eastern European countries ?)
1998
THIS PAPER AIMS TO SHOW HOW EU-INTEGRATION OF THE CENTRAL AND ORIENTAL EUROPEAN COUNTRIES WOULD MODIFY THE GROWTH OF EUROPEAN REGIONS. WE DEMONSTRATE THAT « NEW ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY » AND « NEW GROWTH THEORIES » TOGETHER ARE WELL SUITED TO UNDERSTAND AND EXPLAIN VARIOUS PHENOMENA ASSOCIATED WITH EUROPEAN INTEGRATION POLICIES. WE SHOW THAT THESE POLICIES WILL BE PROFITABLE TO GROWTH BUT WILL REINFORCE THE UROPEAN CORE-PERIPHERY GEOGRAPHIC PATTERN. WE ALSO SHOW THAT SOME MECANISMS COULD COUNTERACT THIS PATTERN OF UNEVEN DEVELOPMENT.
Efficient Diversification of International Investments: The Spanish Point of View
1999
The search for the best investments in a return-risk framework has led the investors to the portfolio diversification. The domestic markets liberalisation and a increasingly financial market integration, have made the investors to exceed the national barriers in order to get the international diversification of their portfolios.
