Torrential precipitations on the Spanish east coast: The role of the Mediterranean sea surface temperature
1995
Abstract Floods constitute one of the most important natural risks on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Although it is very difficult to avoid them, a correct understanding of their principal cause, which is torrential rain, can facilitate their prediction and in this way avoid, at least partially, their catastrophic effects (both loss of human lives and material damage). The work presented here is part of a more extensive study underway in the CEAM (Centro de Estudios Ambientales del Mediterraneo). Its objective is the analysis of the conditions that produce torrential precipitations. These can be explained by the hypothesis of the Back Door Front, a mechanism which on its own permits the d…

Estimating Verdoorn law for Italian firms and regions
2011
In empirical regional economics, returns to scale are typically estimated at the regional level in search for evidence on alternative theories of growth and agglomeration. However, returns to scale may also have a firm-level dimension. In this paper, we exploit micro level data and estimate the dynamic Verdoorn law in a multilevel-setting, where returns to scale are obtained simultaneously for the micro and the regional level. Using Italian firm-level data and the NUTS-3 level of aggregation, we estimate the classic and augmented versions of Verdoorn law for the manufacturing sector, and the rest of the economy for comparison. Our results show that increasing returns to scale co-exist at bo…
Investigating the Effects of Differential Learning on Golfers’ Pitching Performance as a Function of Handicap
2022
Traditionally, golf instruction has been oriented toward imitation of role models, guided by errors that surround a channel of supposedly correct repetition. Recent motor learning approaches relying on the dynamics of living systems suggest the inclusion of additional noise during practice for supporting players’ movement exploration and improving adaptability that in consequence will lead to increased performance. While the effectiveness of this approach has now been demonstrated in many sports, research exploring the effects of differential learning (DL) in golf is scarce, especially when considering different shot distances and players with various handicap levels. Therefore, the p…
Analysis of gas sensors array signals for evaluation of mold contamination in buildings
2018
Mold is considered to be one of the most important features of Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) and is an important problem in building sector. In numerous cases it is caused by the rising moisture of building envelopes and overstated humidity of indoor air. Fungal contamination is normally evaluated using standard biological methods which are time-consuming and require a lot of manual labor. But also, fungi emit Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) that can be detected in the indoor air using several techniques of detection e.g. chromatography. VOCs can be also detected using gas sensors arrays. All arrays of sensors generate particular electric signals that ought to be analyzed using statistical …
Hypothèse de Muséalisation en plein air pour le Quartier hellénistique-romain à Agrigente / Ipotesi di musealizzazione outdoor per il Quartiere ellen…
2014
The contribution presents the results of the activities carried out as a Expert in Museography for the APER project, which included the elaboration of a Musealisation hypothesis for the Domus IA-IB of the Hellenistic-Roman quarter located in Agrigento, i.e. the definition of intervention lines to be applied in an outdoor context to help the general public understand the archaeological site concerned to. The selected museographic strategies correspond to true forms of museal memorisation, aimed at knowing how to transmit the interpretation of an ancient context and its significance to a non-specialist public. In the conclusive phase, it has developed an executive project for two museographic…
Muséaliser l’archéologie : quelques interventions innovantes pour la présentation des ruines / Musealizzare l’archeologia: alcuni interventi innovati…
2014
Intervention on archaeological sites requires a multicriteria approach, which does not lend itself to providing solutions of a general nature so much as solutions linked to the individual case at hand and to the comparison of the interventions involved in the creation of a museum-like context for them. Nevertheless, one should not lose sight of the general aspect of the problem and underestimate a series of considerations regarding what to conserve and why in favour of how to conserve, an aspect which has been extensively tested and which today offers a large range of appropriate solutions and techniques. It is a question of communication, solutions to which must be provided both through to…
Visually low-impacting methods for the measurement of parameters related to IAQ risk indicators in exhibition halls
2021
Microclimate for cultural heritage plays a fundamental role in the degradation process of artefacts exhibited in museums. Generally, the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) monitoring inside museums is based on conventional measurements of thermo-hygrometry parameters and longtime averaged measurements of atmospheric pollutants’ concentration. Unfortunately, all these approaches require electric supply and are usually characterized by a noticeable visual impact on the exhibition space, which clearly negatively affects the visitors’ experience. This paper intends to revisit and discuss a methodology (and its test application on field, to estimate the risk of damage of three artefacts displayed in an ol…
Ārā pavadītā laika ietekme uz miopijas progresēšanu
2021
The recreational value of botanic garden events: A case study of the Zagara plant fair in Palermo, Italy
2022
Botanic gardens are defined by their mission to maintain living plant collections for scientific research, conservation, display and education. This mission represents the potential ecosystem services that botanic gardens aim to produce, with display and education specifically regarding recreational ecosystem services (RES). Visitors must directly experience botanic gardens to transform these potential RES into real benefits, yet the public may not be interested in studying plants during their leisure time. Thus, botanic gardens turn to events to attract visitors. The objective of this study is to estimate the RES benefits created by a botanic garden event and profile the visitors that it b…
