The BeppoSAX 0.1-100 keV Spectrum of the X-Ray Pulsar 4U 1538-52

2001

We report the results of temporal and spectral analysis performed on the X-ray pulsar 4U 1538-52 observed by BeppoSAX. We obtained a new estimate of the spin period of the neutron star P=528.24 \pm 0.01 s (corrected for the orbital motion of the X-ray source): the source is still in the spin-up state, as since 1988. The pulse profile is double peaked, although significant variations of the relative intensity of the peaks with energy are present. The broad band (0.12-100 keV) out-of-eclipse spectrum is well described by an absorbed power law modified by a high energy cutoff at \sim 16 keV (e-folding energy \sim 10 keV) plus an iron emission line at \sim 6.4 keV. A cyclotron line at \sim 21 k…

XMM-Newton detects a relativistically broadened iron line in the spectrum of the ms X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658

2008

We report on a 63-ks long XMM-Newton observation of the accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 during the latest X-ray outburst which started on September 21st 2008. The pn spectrum shows a highly significant emission line in the energy band where the iron K-alpha line is expected, and which we identify as emission from neutral (or mildly ionized) iron. The line profile appears to be quite broad (more than 1 keV FWHM) and asymmetric; the most probable explanation for this profile is Doppler and relativistic broadening from the inner accretion disc. From a fit with a diskline profile we find an inner radius of the disc of 8.7^(+3.7)_(-2.7) R_g, corresponding to 18.0^(+7.6)_(-5.6) km f…

A new approach to determination of the asymmetry parameter of Stark-broadened isolated spectral lines

2013

A new approach to evaluation of asymmetry parameters of Stark-broadened isolated spectral lines is presented. The procedure is discussed on the example of the N I line at λ = 9822.75 A. Line shape measurements were performed using a wall-stabilized arc, operated at atmospheric pressure. The radiation of the plasma, emitted from homogeneous plasma layers in end-on direction, was measured using a grating spectrometer equipped with a two-dimensional CCD detector. Griem-like profiles, convoluted with the corresponding Doppler and apparatus profiles, were fitted to experimental data. In this way the Stark broadening parameters (electron impact widths, shifts and asymmetry) have been determined. …

Relaxation mechanisms affecting magneto-optical resonances in an extremely thin cell: Experiment and theory for the cesiumD1line

2015

We have measured magneto-optical signals obtained by exciting the $D_1$ line of cesium atoms confined to an extremely thin cell (ETC), whose walls are separated by less than one micrometer, and developed an improved theoretical model to describe these signals with experimental precision. The theoretical model was based on the optical Bloch equations and included all neighboring hyperfine transitions, the mixing of the magnetic sublevels in an external magnetic field, and the Doppler effect, as in previous studies. However, in order to model the extreme conditions in the ETC more realistically, the model was extended to include a unified treatment of transit relaxation and wall collisions wi…

Catching the radio flare in CTA 102

2011

Context: The blazar CTA 102 (z=1.037) underwent a historical radio outburst in April 2006. This event offered a unique chance to study the physical properties of the jet. Aims: We used multifrequency radio and mm observations to analyze the evolution of the spectral parameters during the flare as a test of the shock-in-jet model under these extreme conditions. Methods: For the analysis of the flare we took into account that the flaring spectrum is superimposed on a quiescent spectrum. We reconstructed the latter from archival data and fitted a synchrotron self-absorbed distribution of emission. The uncertainties of the derived spectral parameters were calculated using Monte Carlo simulation…

Spin-transfer torques in antiferromagnetic textures: Efficiency and quantification method

2016

We formulate a theory of spin-transfer torques in textured antiferromagnets, which covers the small to large limits of the exchange coupling energy relative to the kinetic energy of the intersublattice electron dynamics. Our theory suggests a natural definition of the efficiency of spin-transfer torques in antiferromagnets in terms of well-defined material parameters, revealing that the charge current couples predominantly to the antiferromagnetic order parameter and the sublattice-canting moment in, respectively, the limits of large and small exchange coupling. The effects can be quantified by analyzing the antiferromagnetic spin-wave dispersions in the presence of charge current: in the l…

Calculations of Stark-broadened line shapes in phase-conjugate degenerate four-wave mixing laser spectroscopy

2005

The Stark-broadened line shapes for phase-conjugate degenerate four-wave mixing (PCDFWM) laser spectroscopy are studied. The line profiles are calculated for high-density $({N}_{e}g{10}^{21}\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{m}}^{\ensuremath{-}3})$ plasma conditions and for different contributions of the Doppler broadening. Calculations are performed in the limit of low laser intensities using the perturbation approach. The theoretical model takes into account the Stark effect together with the ion dynamics, the electron collisions, and the Doppler effect. The resultant PCDFWM spectral profiles are significantly less broadened and less asymmetric than the emission profiles but shifted by s…

Theoretical gain spectrum of coherently pumped mid-infrared Fabry-Pérot lasers

1992

Abstract We study the gain spectrum of a coherently pumped mid-infrared laser which operates in a linear-cavity (Fabry-Perot), using a three-level density matrix theory. Arbitrary pump and emission field strengths as well as pressure and Doppler broadening are considered. A new strong directional gain asymmetry is found, which is related to the presence of two counterpropagating components in the standing-wave generated field. Gain lineshapes in a wide range of operating conditions are obtained and analysed.

Colloidal crystal motion in electric fields

2003

Abstract We report on the short and long time flow behaviour of colloidal crystals subjected to a homogeneous electrical square wave a.c.-field in closed cells of rectangular cross section. Local velocities are determined from Laser Doppler velocimetry, sample structure and morphology were observed by time resolved polarisation microscopy. We observe a complex time dependence of the flow behaviour. After each field reversal we find a transition from an initial parabola-like flow to a final plug-like flow. On the time scale of minutes to hours channel narrowing occurs, i.e. flow initially restricted by the cell walls becomes restricted to the cell centre by wall based stationary crystals. Wi…

Improved test of time dilation in special relativity.

2003

An improved test of time dilation in special relativity has been performed using laser spectroscopy on fast ions at the heavy-ion storage-ring TSR in Heidelberg. The Doppler-shifted frequencies of a two-level transition in 7 Li + ions at v = 0.064c have been measured in the forward and backward direction to an accuracy of Δν/ν = 1 × 10 - 9 using collinear saturation spectroscopy. The result confirms the relativistic Doppler formula and sets a new limit of 2.2 × 10 - 7 for deviations from the time dilation factor γ S R = (1 - ν 2 /c 2 ) - 1 / 2 .
