The macrophyte, Stratiotes aloides, protects larvae of dragonfly Aeshna viridis against fish predation
2004
Predation could be one force determining which contemporary species occupy a certain habitat. Aeshna viridis is an endangered dragonfly species with a larval distribution strongly associated with lakes where the water plant, water soldier, Stratiotes aloides, occurs. In this study, the larvae were almost exclusively found in patches of S. aloides. To study larval association with S. aloides further, we conducted a series of laboratory experiments. Behavioural experiments indicated that larvae preferred S. aloides. Aeshna viridis larvae were nocturnal and rather inactive. Larvae on S. aloides were less susceptible to predation by the perch, Perca fluviatilis, than larvae on another water pla…
Influence of temperature and photoperiod on embryonic development in the dragonflySympetrum striolatum(Odonata: Libellulidae)
2015
Temperature and photoperiod play major roles in insect ecology. Many insect species have fixed degree-days for embryogenesis, with minimum and maximum temperature thresholds for egg and larval development and hatching. Often, photoperiodic changes trigger the transfer into the next life-cycle stadium. However, it is not known whether this distinct pattern also exist in a species with a high level of phenotypic plasticity in life-history traits. In the present study, eggs of the dragonfly Sympetrum striolatum Charpentier (Odonata: Libellulidae) are reared under different constant and fluctuating temperatures and photoperiodic conditions in several laboratory and field experiments. In general…

Phytochemical and anti-staphylococcal biofilm assessment of Dracaena draco L. Spp. draco resin
2013
Background: Dracaena draco L. ssp. draco is known as the “dragon's blood tree” and it is endemic from the Canary Islands and Morocco. Objective: Carry out phytochemical investigation of acetonic extracts of red resin obtained from the trunk of D. draco, to obtain to the isolation of the most abundant resin constituents, belonging to the class of flavonoids: flavans, along with homoisoflavans and homoisoflavanones. Materials and Methods: The structures of the isolated compounds were established by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry data and comparison with literature data. The acetonic extract was evaluated for its anti-staphylococcal properties against two reference stra…
Apocryphal Passions of the Apostles in Croatian Glagolitic Texts
2020
In the course of the Middle Ages, apocryphal and hagiographic texts of The Acts of the Apostles of various origins became part of the Croatian Glagolitic literature. The Passion of Saint Andrew, for example, is documented in the sanctorale of nineteen Croatian Glagolitic breviaries dating from the period between the 14th and mid-16th centuries. The Glagolitic Passion is an abbreviated translation of the Latin Epistula presbyterorum et diaconorum Achaiae (BHL 428) from the 6th century. The texts of the Passion of Jamesthe Apostle (Jacobus Maior, apost., filius Zebedaei, frater Johannis, Passio, BHL 4057) are found in two Glagolitic breviaries, namely the Breviary of Vitus of Omi?alj (1396) a…

Projekt komputu armii litewskiej z 1703 r. wraz z podziałem na poszczególne chorągwie i regimenty
2017
W niniejszym artykule zostaje wprowadzone do obiegu naukowego nowe źródło do badań nad historią armii litewskiej w okresie wielkiej wojny północnej (1700–1721), którym jest projekt komputu z 1703 r. Znajduje się on w Bibliotece Kórnickiej Polskiej Akademii Nauk w rękopisie o sygnaturze 985. W inwentarzu rękopisów biblioteki widnieje natomiast jako komput z 1706 r. Trudno jednak ustalić faktyczną datę jego powstania. Możliwe jest jedynie oszacowanie pewnych cezur. Sporządzony został na pewno przed 27 listopada 1703 r. (wprowadzenie w życie postanowień rady senatu w Jaworowie o pozbawieniu urzędów Sapiehów). Natomiast prawdopodobnie powstał przed lub w trakcie sejmu lubelskiego (11 czerwca – …
