Pleasant Musical Imagery

2019

This article introduces the notion of pleasant musical imagery (PMI) for denoting everyday phenomena where people want to cherish music “in their heads.” This account differs from current paradigms for studying musical imagery in that it is not based a priori on (in)voluntariness of the experience. An empirical investigation of the structure and experiential content in 50 persons’ experiences of PMI applied the elicitation interview method. Peer judgments of the interviews helped to bridge a phenomenological investigation of particular experiences with systematic between-subjects analysis. Both structural features of the imagery (e.g., Looseness of structure or Looping) and content features…

Sharing media content in social media: The challenges and opportunities of user-distributed content (UDC)

2017

The article explores the distribution of mass media content by the online audience that connects by using the different social platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp. The focus is on the new and developing concept of user-distributed content (UDC). From the viewpoint of media organisations, UDC is a process by which the mass media converge with online social networks through the intentional use of social media services and platforms in an effort to expand the distribution of media content. UDC does not have a long trajectory as a study object in media studies. The study suggests that practices related to UDC can be more strongly incorporated into management and journalism in main…

In May of 1864, Maximilia…

Pragmatic markers in contrast: The case of well

2008

Well is the most frequently analysed discourse marker. However, its meaning still remains elusive. The question explored in this paper is to what extent a contrastive analysis of a pragmatic marker can help identify its meaning and functions. The answer to this question is supported by an analysis of the occurrences of well in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral and their functional equivalents in the Catalan and Spanish dubbed versions. The analysis provides evidence that pragmatic markers such as well exhibit differences in meaning when compared with logical markers such as but. Their meaning is fully pragmatic since it does not refer properly to a propositional content but to structural…

Barack Obama's South Carolina speech

2010

Abstract In this paper, I shall analyze US Presidential Barack Obama's South Carolina victory speech from the perspective of pragmemes. In particular, I shall explore the idea that this speech is constituted by many voices (in other words, it displays polyphony, to use an idea due to Bakhtin, 1981 , Bakhtin, 1986 ) and that the audience is part of this speech event, adding and contributing to its text in a collaborative way (in particular, in constructing meaning). As many are aware (including the journalists who report day by day on Barack Obama's achievements), Obama uses the technique of ‘personification’ 1 ( The Economist , December 13th, 2007). When he voices an idea, he does not just …

Epistemic Search Sequences in Peer Interaction in a Content-based Language Classroom

2013

Epistemics in interaction refers to how participants display, manage, and orient to their own and others’ states of knowledge. This article applies recent conversation analytical work on epistemics to classrooms where language and content instruction are combined. It focuses on Epistemic Search Sequences (ESSs) through which students in peer interaction collectively resolve emerging knowledge gaps while working on pedagogic tasks. ESSs are initiated when a speaker displays an ‘unknowing’ epistemic stance by making an information request about some aspect of language or the content being worked on. We examine three different types of ESS: those in which a ‘knowing’ response is accepted by th…

Eric Rohmer, Alain Robbe-Grillet : parcours fantasmatique

2015

In this article, we study the relationship between Alain Robbe-Grillet and Eric Rohmer’s works through the problematic of fantasy. Even though Robbe-Grillet’s films seem to be the opposite extreme of the ones of the director of the « Nouvelle vague », we will see that both authors share notable similarities. Indeed, both Robbe-Grillet and Rohmer focus on the world of dream and fantasy in films in which the notion of reality is questioned. Through the study of figures like the « frivolous girl », we will also focus on the treatment of stereotypes, the figurations of the imaginary without which fantasy may not exist. Eventually, we will treat the problem (thematically as well as aesthetically…

”Pitikö runouskin vetää ihan läskiksi?”

2015

The Affective Reception of Tytti Heikkinen’s Poem “Ryhavalaan tasoa” In this article, I analyze the reception of Tytti Heikkinen’s poem ”Ryhavalaan tasoa” (”On par with whales”) from the viewpoint of affectivity. ”Ryhavalaan tasoa” is a Flarf poem which means that it has been made of material found from the internet with weird search terms. Flarf poetry is also based on a kind of aesthetics of ugliness. The poem is a dramatic monologue in which the speaking I – a girl called ”Fatty XL” – talks unrestrainedly and vulgarly about fatness, sexuality and shame. Theoretically, the article relies mainly on Rita Felski’s and Sianne Ngai’s views on affectivity of reading. The research material consi…

On the Strangeness of Pop Art Picturebooks: Pictures, Texts, Paratexts

2011

As a species of picturebook emerging around 1970, some Pop Art picturebooks were quite successful in their time, but appear strange from today's point of view. This strangeness has to do with multiple transgressions of traditional conventions restricting the notion of a “good” picturebook: transgressions regarding artistic style (influenced by the Pop Art movement), transgressions regarding the stories' content (with their emphasis on weird characters, surprising twists in narration and plot, and a fanciful combination of sceneries), and transgressions regarding the idea that politics and economic and social problems should be banned from picturebooks (displaying an anti-capitalist or anti-…
