On Computational Models of Interconnected Perception, Reasoning, and Action — in Dream Worlds

2023

We distinguish between real versus unreal worlds, and include in the latter category fictional worlds and — perhaps the hardest type of unreal world to plumb — dream worlds. Dream worlds, from the standpoint of building computational cognitive models, present a number of acute challenges in at least three areas of human mentation that are for us as AI researchers and computational cognitive scientists deeply interconnected; these areas are: perception, reasoning, and action. We are attempting to specifically answer three tough questions, one in each of these three areas; the answers (for us) must be based upon robust computational models that are both theoretically well-founded, and brought…

Tagesreste e Simulacra: sogni e sogni erotici in Lucrezio

2017

In accordance with the Epicurean doctrine which denies the dream…

Dreams and Trauma Changes in the Manifest Dreams in Psychoanalytic Treatments - A Psychoanalytic Outcome Measure.

2021

Although psychoanalysts are interested in symptom reduction as an outcome, they are looking for instruments to measure sustaining changes in the unconscious mental functioning. In this article it is discussed that conceptually well-founded transformation of manifest dreams analyzed with precise empirical methods could be considered as a promising indicator for such therapeutic changes. We are summarizing a dream generation model by Moser and von Zeppelin which has integrated a large interdisciplinary knowledge base of contemporary dream and sleep research. Based on this model the authors have developed a valid and reliable coding system for analyzing manifest dreams, the Zurich Dream Proces…

Dreams and Themes in the texts of the “Reaalifantasia” group : Unnatural Minds in Anne Leinonen’s Viivamaalari and J. Pekka Mäkelä’s Muurahaispuu

2017

This article deals with the unnaturally functioning and frame-breaking dreams and the unnatural minds they are connected to in the novels Viivamaalari (2013) by Anne Leinonen and Muurahaispuu (2012) by J. Pekka Mäkelä. The dreams in the novels are discussed as examples of the poetics and thematics of Reaalifantasia, a young Finnish group of authors who in their writings combine fantasy elements with features of other genres. These minds and dreams as well as the ideologically charged themes they foreground are analyzed using the concepts and viewpoints of unnatural narratology. peerReviewed

Why are dreams interesting for philosophers? The example of minimal phenomenal selfhood, plus an agenda for future research1

2013

This metatheoretical paper develops a list of new research targets by exploring particularly promising interdisciplinary contact points between empirical dream research and philosophy of mind. The central example is the MPS-problem. It is constituted by the epistemic goal of conceptually isolating and empirically grounding the phenomenal property of “minimal phenomenal selfhood,” which refers to the simplest form of self-consciousness. In order to precisely describe MPS, one must focus on those conditions that are not only causally enabling, but strictly necessary to bring it into existence. This contribution argues that research on bodiless dreams, asomatic out-of-body experiences, and ful…
