Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-Based Non Destructive Diagnostics
2018
The paper proposes a cloud platform for analyzing the radiometric infrared videos uploaded by drones which patrol large photovoltaic plants. Thanks to artificial vision algorithms, it does not require any human support to select and associate the framed PV modules to the corresponding ones in the topology of the photovoltaic plant. The algorithm implements an innovative diagnostic protocol, which evaluates the thermal state of the photovoltaic module, whichever the environmental conditions are. The data automatically computed and collected in a multimedia database provide the O&M technicians with significant information to monitor the ageing of each module of the photovoltaic plant. The pro…
The use of armed drones for counter-terrorism purposes: whether customary international law?
2019
The vast and rapid development of technologies constantly creates gaps in the law within both the international and national law systems. One of such technologies the increased usage of which for military purposes has instituted a debate on the applicable law for its use under the existing legal frameworks is the technology of armed drones, also known as armed unmanned aerial vehicles (AUAVs). The source of the debate is the presumption that armed drones are almost exclusively used for counter-terrorism purposes, thus involving their use against non-state actors operating in a country that a state is not in war with. The author of this thesis will, first of all, identify the established leg…
Role of antibiotic prophylaxis in antenatal hydronephrosis: A systematic review from the European Association of Urology/European Society for Paediat…
2017
Summary Background The benefits and harms of continuous antibiotic prophylaxis (CAP) versus observation in patients with antenatal hydronephrosis (ANH) are controversial. Objective The aim was to determine the effectiveness of CAP for ANH, and if beneficial to determine the best type and regimen of antibiotic and the most harmful to provide guidance for clinical practice. Methods A systematic literature search was performed in databases including Medline, Embase, and Cochrane in June 2015. The protocol was prospectively registered to PROSPERO (CRD42015024775). The search started from 1980, when maternal ultrasound was first introduced into clinical practice. Eligible studies were critically…
Dronética y diseño responsable de los drones
2021
Measuring rill erosion at plot scale by a drone-based technology
2015
The traditional direct method (i.e. metric ruler and rillmeter) of monitoring rill erosion at plot scale is time consuming and invasive since it modifies the surface of the rilled area. Measuring rill features using a drone-based technology is considered a non-invasive method allowing a fast field relief. In the experimental Sparacia area a survey by a quadricopter Microdones md4-200 was carried out and this relief allowed the generation of a Digital Elevation Model (DEM), with a mesh size of 1 cm and a resolution elevation equal to 2 mm, for three plots (L, G and C) affected by rill erosion. At first for the experimental L plot, which is 44 m long, the rill features were surveyed by a “man…
On American Drone Strikes And (Possible) European Responsibilities: Facing The Issue Of Jurisdiction For “Complicity” In Extraterritorial Targeted Ki…
2019
States Party to the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR) regularly provide third States with key aid or assistance in performing extraterritorial targeted killings through armed drones: by doing so, they can be said to engage in conduct amounting to “complicity” for the purposes of international law of State responsibility. Strictly speaking, however, ECHR provisions do not apply to such conduct, which cannot be included into existing models of “jurisdiction” as per Article 1 ECHR – namely, “spatial” and “personal”. This results in a troublesome legal vacuum. The present article proposes an appraisal of such conduct through the lenses of a third jurisdictional model, already acknowled…
Post-fire practices benefits on vegetation recovery and soil conservation in a Mediterranean area
2021
Financiado para publicación en acceso aberto: Universidade da Coruña/CISUG. [Abstract] Post-fire practices (PFP) aim to reduce soil erosion and favour vegetation recovery, but their effectiveness is spatially heterogeneous and under debate because of the economic and environmental costs. This study evaluates the different changes (Δ) of canopy cover (CC), sediment connectivity (SC) and local topography in four areas affected by the Pinet fire in eastern Spain (August 8th, 2018) and managed with: totally burnt with tree removal and long log erosion barriers (LEBs) (Pinet-1), partially burnt without PFP (Pinet-2), totally burnt with tree removal and short LEBs (Pinet-3), and totally burnt wit…
Identification of the inertial model for innovative semi-immergible USV (SI-USV) drone for marine and lakes operations
2015
The proposed project shows the results obtained in the implementation and testing in lacustrine and marine environment of a nautical remote controlled vehicle with surface navigation and innovative features Semi-Immergible (SI-USV). This vehicle is based on a pending patent belonging to Palermo University (Patent Pending RM2012A000209 and Patent RM2014Z000060) concerning innovative semi-immersible vehicles (SI-Drone), that can be remotely controlled from the ground, air, satellite and sea also during the semi-immersible operation. Given its low draft, the electric powered vehicle, coupled with jet propulsion, makes it possible to navigate in shallow waters, coastal shipping or sandbars.
Drones - New technologies for geophysics?
2015
Drones, also referred as Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) or Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA), are aircraft without pilot on board. USA is today the leading country in the field of UAS but recently, seven European countries have pledged to launch joint programs for drones, with the aim of producing the next generation of UAS before 2020. According to some studies on the potential market of UAS in Europe, the geoscience sector is definitely one of the most promising. In this paper, we bring a short description and classification of drones, according to their sized and shaped, with particular attention to the advantages and drawbacks of each type in reference to …
Measurement of the azimuthal ordering of charged hadrons with the ATLAS detector
2012
This paper presents a study of the possible ordering of charged hadrons in the azimuthal angle relative to the beam axis in high-energy proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A spectral analysis of correlations between longitudinal and transverse components of the momentum of the charged hadrons, driven by the search for phenomena related to the structure of the QCD field, is performed. Data were recorded with the ATLAS detector at center-of-mass energies of √s=900 GeV and √s=7 TeV. The correlations measured in a kinematic region dominated by low-pT particles are not well described by conventional models of hadron production. The measured spectra show features consis…
