Abstract In this paper, potentiometry and calorimetry were used to determine the thermodynamics of interaction between risedronate and four bivalent metal cations, namely: Mg2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, and Cu2+ in aqueous NaCl solutions at different ionic strengths and at T = 298.15 K. The data analysis allowed us to ascertain that the main species formed were the MLH2, MLH, ML and M2L; however scarcely soluble species precipitated at acidic pH values, between 4 and 7 depending on the metal cation involved, probably due to the formation of the neutral M2L(s) species. Risedronic acid (see Figure 1) belongs to the class of biphosphonates (BP), widely used in the medical field to treat bone disorders. Bisphosphonates (BPs, e.g., alendronate, risedronate, and ibandronate) help to maintain bone mass, to inhibit osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, and to reduce the risk of both vertebral and non-vertebral fractures. The clinical efficacy of BPs is mainly based on two key properties: their capacity to strongly bind hydroxyapatite crystals of bone, and their inhibitory effects on osteoclast precursors and mature osteoclasts. FIRST MEASUREMENT OF THE STRANGE QUARK ASYMMETRY AT THE Z(0) PEAK

A measurement of the strange quark forward-backward asymmetry at the Z0 peak was performed using 718,000 multihadronic Z0 decays collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP in 1992. The s-quark was tagged by the presence of high momentum charged kaons identified by the Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector and by Λ0;s decaying into pπ-. The s-quark purity obtained was estimated for the two hadrons to be 43%. The average s-quark asymmetry was found to be 0.131±0.035 (stat.) ±0.013 (syst.). The forward-backward asymmetry was measured for unresolved d-and s-quarks, tagged by the detection of a high energy neutron or neutral kaon in the Hadron Calorimeter. The authors present a measurement of the t{bar t} production cross section using events with one charged lepton and jets from p{bar p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. A b-tagging algorithm based on the probability of displaced tracks coming from the event interaction vertex is applied to identify b quarks from top decay. Using 318 pb{sup -1} of data collected with the CDF II detector, they measure the t{bar t} production cross section in events with at least one restrictive (tight) b-tagged jet and obtain 8.9{sub -1.0}{sup +1.0}(stat.){sub -1.0}{sup +1.1}(syst.) pb. Precision electroweak measurements on the Z resonance

We report on the final electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the Z resonance by the experiments operating at the electron-positron colliders SLC and LEP. The data consist of 17 million Z decays accumulated by the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL experiments at LEP, and 600 thousand Z decays by the SLD experiment using a polarised beam at SLC. The measurements include cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries and polarised asymmetries. The mass and width of the Z boson, $\MZ$ and $\GZ$, and its couplings to fermions, for example the $\rho$ parameter and the effective electroweak mixing angle, are precisely measured.
