Orientation of charged clay nanotubes in evaporating droplet meniscus.

During drying, an aqueous suspension of strongly charged halloysite clay nanotubes concentrates at the edge of the droplet ("coffee-ring" effect) which provides alignment of the tubes along the liquid-substrate contact line. First, the surface charge of the nanotubes was enhanced by polyanion adsorption inside of the lumen to compensate for the internal positive charges. This increased the magnitude of the ξ-potential of the tubes from -36 to -81mV and stabilized the colloids. Then, colloidal halloysite was dropped onto the substrate, dried at 65°C and after a concentration of ~0.05mgmL-1 was reached, the alignment of nanotubes occurred starting from the droplet edges. …

Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSPs) are genetically heterogeneous conditions caused by the progressive dying back of the longest axons in the central nervous system, the corticospinal axons. A wealth of data in the last decade has unraveled disturbances of lipid droplet (LD) biogenesis, maturation, turnover and contact sites in cellular and animal models with perturbed expression and function of HSP proteins. As ubiquitous organelles that segregate neutral lipid into a phospholipid monolayer, LDs are at the cross-road of several processes including lipid metabolism and trafficking, energy homeostasis, and stress signaling cascades. Histochemical and biochemical investigations concerning the function of larval oenocytes of Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera, Insecta).

Larval oenocytes of Tenebrio molitor were investigated histochemically. In contrast to the lipid droplets of the fat body, they did not stain with Sudan black. A positive reaction for lipoproteins appeared only after destructive oxidation with sodium hypochlorite. These lipoproteins are the remnants of degenerated membranes, as revealed by ultrastructural analysis. Polyphenols could be identified in the exocuticle of exuvia, and in the newly formed procuticle. Endocuticle, epidermis and oenocytes showed no staining reaction. In oenocytes a great amount of lipase is also present which could be detected with several Tweens as substrates. Due to its high lipid turnover rates, regulation of intramyocellular lipid droplets (LDs) is a key factor. Lipodystrophy (LD) is a main side effect of antiretroviral therapy for HIV infection, and can be provoked by nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and protease inhibitors (PIs). LD exists in different forms, characterized by fat loss, accumulation, or both, but its pathogenesis is still unclear. Paraoxonase-1 deficiency is associated with severe liver steatosis in mice fed a high-fat high-cholesterol diet: a metabolomic approach.

Oxidative stress is a determinant of liver steatosis and the progression to more severe forms of disease. The present study investigated the effect of paraoxonase-1 (PON1) deficiency on histological alterations and hepatic metabolism in mice fed a high-fat high-cholesterol diet. We performed nontargeted metabolomics on liver tissues from 8 male PON1-deficient mice and 8 wild-type animals fed a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet for 22 weeks.
