The Impact of Environmental Conditions on Efficiency of Host Plant DNA Barcoding for Polyphagous Beetles.

2015

Recently, several papers were published dealing with host plant identification for selected species of insects, including beetles. These studies took advantage of the DNA barcoding approach and generally showed that it is possible to identify diet composition from plant DNA present in insect guts. However, none of these studies considered how the impact of environmental conditions affected the likelihood of insect feeding and, therefore, the presence of host plant DNA that could be amplified and sequenced. In the present study, individuals of the polyphagous weevil Centricnemus leucogrammus (Germar, 1824) (Curculionidae: Entiminae) were used to test the hypothesis that harsh environmental c…

MOLECULAR AND METABOLIC ANALYSES IN DEVELOPING OLIVE FRUIT IN RELATION TO DIFFERENT WATER REGIMES

2011

Despite the global economic importance of olive (Olea europaea L.), little is known about the molecular and metabolic changes during fruit development and the modulation of quality-related metabolic pathways during drought stress. In this work, we report the expression pattern of genes involved in important pathways of secondary metabolism (polyphenols, terpenoids) during fruit development in rainfed or fully irrigated olive plants. Phenolic compounds represent a complex mixture in both olive fruits and oil. The interest on these compounds is due to their demonstrated anti-atherogenic and anti-cancerogenic effects providing to the olive oil important nutraceutical properties. Several parame…

<em>Plants suffering from drought stress can be indicated by the changing of character on the morphology, anatomy and physiology, characterized by inhibition of leaf growth, accelerated root growth, stomata closure and leaf curly. Cultivars that are tolerance to drought can physiologically adapted by increasing prolin level reduce the osmotic potential in order to maintain turgor in the condition of low tissue water potential. The research was aimed to study the physiological characters of drought tolerant soybean cultivar of determine the relationship of nitrate reductase activity and chlorophyll content of drought-tolerance cultivars and susceptible to drought stress conditions. An Investigation of the Seasonal Pattern of Mannitol Content in Deciduous and Evergreen Species of the Oleaceae Growing in Northern Sicily

2002

In several species of the Oleaceae, mannitol, already present at considerable levels, accumulates in response to stress. This family comprises both deciduous and evergreen species, and we investigated the role of mannitol in deciduous malacophyll and evergreen sclerophyll species growing under the same conditions in the field. The relationship between mannitol content and changes in rainfall or temperature was also studied. The mannitol content of leaves of Fraxinus ornus L., F. angustifolia Vahl., Olea europaea L. and Phillyrea media L. was determined by gas chromatography. Leaf samples were collected once a month for 1 year. In the two ash species, the seasonal pattern of mannitol content…

Identifying conserved genes involved in crop tolerance to cold stress

2022

Low temperature is a limiting factor for crop productivity in tropical and subtropical climates. Cold stress response in plants involves perceiving and relaying the signal through a transcriptional cascade composed of different transduction components, resulting in altered gene activity. We performed a meta-analysis of four previously published datasets of cold-tolerant and cold-sensitive crops to better understand the gene regulatory networks and identify key genes involved in cold stress tolerance conserved across phylogenetically distant species. Re-analysing the raw data with the same bioinformatics pipeline, we identified common cold tolerance-related genes. We found 236 and 242 common…

A new case of Worster-Drought syndrome

2012

Introduction: Worster-Drought syndrome (WDS) consists of a congenital pseudobulbar palsy and is usually associated with spastic tetraplegia, learning impairment, behavioural problems, and epilepsy. Congenital bilateral perisylvian syndrome (CBPS) is characterized by bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria on imaging. Clark et al, have previously proposed a WDS spectrum that includes CBPS, speculating that it may be due to malformation of the perisylvian region due to various perinatal or congenital causes, whether demonstrable on imaging, or functional and not visible with current imaging techniques. Worster-Drought suggested that the syndrome is probably a developmental defect of the motor tr…

Data from: Coping with the climate: cuticular hydrocarbon acclimation of ants under constant and fluctuating conditions

2018

Terrestrial arthropods achieve waterproofing by a layer of cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs). At the same time, CHCs also serve as communication signals. To maintain waterproofing under different climate conditions, insects adjust the chemical composition of their CHC layer, but this may affect the communication via CHC. The detailed acclimatory changes of CHCs and how these influence their physical properties are still unknown. Here, we studied acclimation in two closely related ant species with distinct CHC profiles, Myrmica rubra and Myrmica ruginodis, in response to constant or fluctuating temperature and humidity regimes. We measured how acclimation affected CHC composition and viscosity, …

This paper discusses a mic…

Quantifying the spatial extent and intensity of recent extreme drought events in the Amazon rainforest and their impacts on the carbon cycle

2020

Over the last decades, the Amazon rainforest was hit by multiple severe drought events. Here we assess the severity and spatial extent of the extreme drought years 2005, 2010, and 2015/2016 in the Amazon region and their impacts on the carbon cycle. As an indicator of drought stress in the Amazon rainforest, we use the widely applied maximum cumulative water deficit (ΔMCWD). Evaluating an ensemble of ten state-of-the-art precipitation datasets for the Amazon region, we find that the spatial extent of the drought in 2005 ranges from 2.8 to 4.2 (mean = 3.2) million km2 (46–71 % of the Amazon basin, mean = 53 %) where ΔMCWD indicates at le…
