PASSIONATE DESCARTES: A REINTERPRETATION OF THE BODY'S ROLE IN CARTESIAN THOUGHT

Abstract The usual reading of Descartes' “anthropological” perspective classifies it as a radical dualism with a distinction between two substances, mind and body, which experience major interaction difficulties. Through a contextualization of Descartes' physiological and psychological thought as well as through a less fragmented reading of his work, we intend to review this traditional interpretation, thereby showing its distorted character. When we pay attention to passion, a new Descartes’ image as a sort of phenomenal monism appears, which is markedly different from the legendary image typically associated with him, even today.

The nineteenth century was characterized, on the one hand, by the common purpose towards the development of legal remedies against the public administration, on the other hand, by different opinions about the best way to achieve this goal. The present paper suggests that the preference for monism was the result of abstract legal ideologies, while the dualist system prevailed on the grounds of effectiveness of legal protection. Today the neo-monism has a different meaning: it is an authoritarian way to make the public authorities free from the narrow constraints of the administrative law.

A revision of the remains of Deinogalerix from the Terre Rosse of Gargano, stored at the Department of Earth Sciences of Florence, improved our knowledge of the genus. The goals of this study are to clear the taxonomic status of the specimens and to tackle several issues connected with the evolutionary relationships of the different species. The sample of dental remains of Deinogalerix freudenthali provides new information, which confirms that this species belongs to the most primitive members of the genus, alongside D. masinii. Lawyer, jurist and statesman, he founded the Italian School of Public Law and worked out an original version of the “Rechtsstaat”.
