Optical quenching and recovery of photoconductivity in single-crystal diamond

2017

We study the photocurrent induced by pulsed-light illumination (pulse duration is several nanoseconds) of single-crystal diamond containing nitrogen impurities. Application of additional continuous-wave light of the same wavelength quenches pulsed photocurrent. Characterization of the optically quenched photocurrent and its recovery is important for the development of diamond based electronics and sensing. (C) 2017 Author(s). Effect of temperature on the duration of sensitive period and on the number of photoperiodic cycles required for the induction of reproductive diapau…

2013

Abstract Correct timing of the induction of photoperiodic reproductive diapause has been found to play an important role in the life cycle of several northern insect species. However, even when the environmental conditions are favourable for diapause, the switch to diapause can only take place when the females are in a proper developmental and physiological stage, referred to as the sensitive period (SP) for diapause. We have previously shown that in a northern fly species, Drosophila montana, the developmental pathway of the ovaries (direct maturation vs. diapause) is determined by photoperiodic cues that the females receive after eclosion. Here, we have studied the effects of temperature …

The Time Course of Emotional Responses to Music

2005

Two empirical studies investigate the time course of emotional responses to music. In the first one, musically trained and untrained listeners were required to listen to 27 musical excerpts and to group those that conveyed a similar emotional meaning. In one condition, the excerpts were 25 seconds long on average. In the other condition, excerpts were as short as 1 second. The groupings were then transformed into a matrix of emotional dissimilarity that was analyzed with multidimensional scaling methods (MDS). We compared the outcome of these analyses for the 25-s and 1-s duration conditions. In the second study, we presented musical excerpts of increasing duration, varying from 250 to 20 s…

THE DURATION OF FIRM-DESTINATION EXPORT RELATIONSHIPS: EVIDENCE FROM SPAIN, 1997-2006

2012

I. INTRODUCTION The traditional trade literature that investigates aggregate trade flows emphasizes the sizeable increase in trade relationships since World War II and the remarkable persistence of trade flows. However, recent microlevel studies point out that under the stable aggregate trade flows there is a rich dynamics at firm- and/or product-level with a high turnover. In fact, international-market presence is often a transitory and an uncommon phenomenon. At any period, only a small percentage of home-based firms participate in trade and exporting firms are different from non-exporters (larger, more productive, etc.). Moreover, there is much persistence in exporting status; being an e…

Effort in Semi-Automatized Subtitling Processes

2020

The presented study investigates the impact of automatic speech recognition (ASR) and assisting scripts on effort during transcription and translation processes, two main subprocesses of interlingual subtitling. Applying keylogging and eye tracking, this study takes a first look at how the integration of ASR impacts these subprocesses. 12 professional subtitlers and 13 translation students were recorded performing two intralingual transcriptions and three translation tasks to evaluate the impact on temporal, technical, and cognitive effort, and split-attention. Measures include editing time, visit count and duration, insertions, and deletions. The main findings show that, in both tasks, ASR…

Crisis and Opportunities Variables always Addressed Simultaneously in Effective Management

2013

Abstract Understanding the causes, duration and consequences of the crisis and the means to exit it are far from being regarded as sufficiently understood and operationalized. From the general components of the crisis, there was a necessity to be defined and managed separately the subjective component (disorientation, confusion) and the objective component, which are unequivocally different. They have to be operationalized into strategies, programs and tactical procedures to traverse and overcome the crisis with minimal loss. The paper also deals with the opportunities that crisis can create and with the measures necessary to identify and exploit these.

The Relation Between Stretching Typology and Stretching Duration: The Effects on Range of Motion.

2018

AbstractDifferent stretching strategies and protocols are widely used to improve flexibility or maintain health, acting on the muscle tendon-unit, in order to improve the range of motion (ROM) of the joints. This review aims to evaluate the current body of literature in order to understand the relation between stretching typology and ROM, and secondly to evaluate if a relation exists between stretching volume (either as a single training session, weekly training and weekly frequency) and ROM, after long-term stretching. Twenty-three articles were considered eligible and included in the quantitative synthesis. All stretching typologies showed ROM improvements over a long-term period, however…

Creating Passionate Love Through Rational Value: A Moderated Mediation Analysis Considering Identification and Relationship Duration

2016

This study contributes to insights of the effectiveness of identification on passionate love. But more differentiated in comparison to previous research we show direct effects of the two dimensions of identification, self-reflection and self-enhancement as important influence factors of passionate love. According to Steinberg’s (Psychol Rev 93(2):119–135, 1986) Triangular Theory of Love, love is not only triggered by emotional aspects that are beyond reason. So utilitarian attributes that are more down-to-earth and realistic namely quality value, price value, and uniqueness can be relevant drivers of love. But more important, is their influence constant during the course of a relationship? …

Vitamin and Mineral Supplementation and Neuromuscular Recovery after a Running Race

2006

International audience; Purpose: This double-blind study investigated the effects of vitamin and mineral complex supplementation on the neuromuscular function of the knee-extensor muscles after a prolonged trail running race. Methods: Twenty-two well-trained endurance runners took either placebo (Pl group) or vitamins and minerals (Vm group) for 21 d before the race and for 2 d after the race. Maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and surface EMG activity of the vastus lateralis (VL) muscle were recorded before (pre) and 1 h (post), 24 h (post 24) and 48 h (post 48) after the race. Central activation ratio (CAR), neural (M-wave), and contractile (muscular twitch) properties of the quadriceps…

Influence d'une supplémentation en vitamines sur le rendement de la locomotion après une épreuve d'ultratrail

2006

International audience; Aim: The purpose of this study was to study changes in gross efficiency of locomotion after a prolonged trail running race (3000 m up and 300 m down). The second purpose was to investigate the effectiveness of supplementation in vitamin on gross efficiency variability.Materials and methods: Twenty-two well-trained endurance runners took part in this study. They had to perform four sub maximal tests before, 24, 48 and 72 hours after the race in order to estimate gross efficiency of locomotion and a maximal contraction test in the same period. They were divided in two groups either with supplementation (Isoxan Endurance ®) or without (placebo). Results: In both groups w…
