Transgenerational innovation capability in family firms

2020

PurposeBased on the theory of dynamic capabilities, the purpose of this study is to examine how generation influences the effect of innovation capability on family business performance. To achieve this purpose, a moderation model is tested using the generational level as the moderating variable.Design/methodology/approachThis study used a sample of 106 family businesses CEOs who were surveyed by mail using the Limesurvey 2.5 platform. The results obtained were analyzed using the second-generation partial least squares (PLS) structural equation model. The MICOM (Measurement Invariance of Composite Models) approach was used to analyze the moderating effect.FindingsThis research sheds lights o…

Learning, knowledge and dynamic capabilities: theoretical implications for competitiveness and innovation in the 21st century

2013

The aim of this paper is to support dynamic capabilities as a strategic tool for company management. We will begin by illustrating the evolution that can be discerned in the process of developing competitive advantage as a result of the organisation s internal analysis. In a first stage, interest was centred on understanding the nature of the firm s assets, and knowing which conditions would make it possible to turn them into lasting and sustainable sources of competitive advantage. During a second phase, interest was shifted towards the dynamic processes of generation, development and accumulation of assets. In this sense, dynamic capabilities are those which allow managers to activate and…

Dynamic capabilities in the internationalization process of companies distributing products of the agribusiness sector

2016

The agri-food sector faces important internal and external barriers to internationalization that could be overcome by the development of dynamic capabilities. Generic dynamic capabilities generate sector and environment specific dynamic capabilities that directly contribute to overcome the barriers of internationalization. Our contribution is to determine which specific dynamic capabilities of the distribution companies collaborate to overcome these barriers and as a consequence to improve international results. A qualitative study with directors and managers of the sector was carried out. The results give rise to confirm that the specific dynamic capabilities largely help to resolve the in…

The Importance of Internal Resources and Capabilities and Destination Resources to Explain Firm Competitive Position in the Spanish Tourism Industry

2015

This study draws on the Resource-Based View to analyze the effects of distinctive competences in tourism firms and location in a tourism district on competitive position, and explores the moderating effects of the tourism destination. Multiple linear regression was used to test the research hypotheses on a sample of 1019 Spanish tourism firms. Results reveal that financial resources and dynamic and production capabilities favor a better competitive position for tourism firms in general; however, coordination and marketing capabilities are key factors for firms embedded in a tourism district, while dynamic capabilities have a negative effect in this case. Koncepcja dynamicznych zdolności w budowaniu konkurencyjności łańcucha dostaw

2019

W ostatnich latach zauważalne jest stale postępujące i coraz bardziej wyraziste „osadzenie” problematyki logistyki i zarządzania łańcuchem dostaw w zasobowym nurcie zarządzania strategicznego. W szczególności zaprezentowano tu istotę konkurencyjności i jej podstawowe wyzn…

Are quality management practices enough to improve process innovation?

2015

The popularity of quality management as a system for continuous improvement has not been accompanied by deep theoretical understanding of its effects on process innovation. In this work, the resource-based view serves as the basis for the construction of a model designed to explain the effects of quality management practices (QMP) on process innovation performance and the mediating role of dynamic capabilities in this relationship. The empirical data were analysed using the structural equation modelling technique by examining 6 competing models that represent full, partial mediation and non-mediation relationships on a sample of 550 Spanish industrial companies. The findings indicate that t…

The Essence of Dynamic Capabilities and their Measurement

2016

The growing popularity of explaining firm performance through dynamic capabilities has motivated plenty of conceptual development in the field. However, empirical approaches to measuring dynamic capabilities have so far not been under comprehensive scrutiny. The authors; purpose is to assess the extent to which different ways of measuring dynamic capabilities in quantitative studies correspond to the theoretical essence of the concept, and develop recommendations for future research. They find that four types of operationalizations have been used: (1) managers’ evaluations; (2) financial data; (3) company's experience, actions and performance; and (4) managers’ or employees’ experience, act…

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE RESOURCE BASED FIRM BETWEEN VALUE APPROPRIATION AND VALUE CREATION

2005

Various authors have brought forth the idea that the increase in context turbulence and the relentless change in today’s economic and competitive environments have rendered it essential for an effective firm strategy to combine both value appropriation and value creation (Porter, (1996); Moran & Ghoshal, (1999); Venkataraman & Sarasvathy, (2001); Hitt et al., (2001b). Nonetheless, the methodological bases and the assumptions that characterize contributions concerning value appropriation and value creation are notably different and in many respects opposite to one another. These profound methodological differences hinder the possibility of a combined consideration of value appropriation and …

Pouring new wine into old bottles: A dynamic perspective of the interplay among environmental dynamism, capabilities development, and performance

2022

In order to face increased environmental dynamism (ED), firms are increasingly called on to leverage deliberate learning processes that make dynamic capabilities emerge in a path-dependent way from the conversion of tacit knowledge to explicit knowledge. Moreover, to mitigate the effect that ED can play in eroding a firm's capabilities and subsequently its performance, managers need to effectively align short- and long-term strategies, which in the literature have been addressed as ‘capability traps’. Although these two processes are strictly interrelated, to date they have been treated in quite an isolated way and usually through the development of linear approaches. To fill this gap, leve…

In the rapidly changing educational circumstances, educational leadership needs to develop dynamic capabilities by integrating and reconfiguring their internal and external resources and competencies. However, few research have been carried out to comprehend the development of dynamic capabilities in educational organizations. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore how educational organizations develop dyna…
