Viscosity of n-alcohol binary mixtures

1988

In this paper liquid mixture viscosities at 25 °C for 18 binary systems formed by primary n-alcohols have been measured. These values were fitted to Topological Treatment of Mixtures (T.T.M.) The pure compound topological description is obtained following the DARC system rules. A weighting function was introduced to obtain the topological description of a mixture. The results obtained with this model agree with experimental data (average deviation less than 2% in all cases). Dans cette etude, nous avons mesure des viscosites de melanges liquides a 25°C pour dix-huit systemes binaires formes par des n-alcools primaires. Ces valeurs ont ete calees par le traitement topologique des melanges (T…

Human Reaction Times: Linking Individual and Collective Behaviour Through Physics Modeling

2021

An individual’s reaction time data to visual stimuli have usually been represented in Experimental Psychology by means of an ex-Gaussian function. In most previous works, researchers have mainly aimed at finding a meaning for the parameters of the ex-Gaussian function which are known to correlate with cognitive disorders. Based on the recent evidence of correlations between the reaction time series to visual stimuli produced by different individuals within a group, we go beyond and propose a Physics-inspired model to represent the reaction time data of a coetaneous group of individuals. In doing so, a Maxwell–Boltzmann-like distribution appeared, the same distribution as for the velocities …

Machinery Failure Approach and Spectral Analysis to Study the Reaction Time Dynamics over Consecutive Visual Stimuli: An Entropy-Based Model.

2020

[EN] The reaction times of individuals over consecutive visual stimuli have been studied using an entropy-based model and a failure machinery approach. The used tools include the fast Fourier transform and a spectral entropy analysis. The results indicate that the reaction times produced by the independently responding individuals to visual stimuli appear to be correlated. The spectral analysis and the entropy of the spectrum yield that there are features of similarity in the response times of each participant and among them. Furthermore, the analysis of the mistakes made by the participants during the reaction time experiments concluded that they follow a behavior which is consistent with …

Controlled assembly of single colloidal crystals using electro-osmotic micro-pumps.

2017

We assemble charged colloidal spheres at deliberately chosen locations on a charged unstructured glass substrate utilizing ion exchange based electro-osmotic micro-pumps. Using microscopy, a simple scaling theory and Brownian Dynamics simulations, we systematically explore the control parameters of crystal assembly and the mechanisms through which they depend on the experimental boundary conditions. We demonstrate that crystal quality depends crucially on the assembly distance of the colloids. This is understood as resulting from the competition between inward transport by the electro-osmotic pump flow and the electro-phoretic outward motion of the colloids. Optimized conditions include sub…

Protein dynamics: conformational disorder, vibrational coupling and anharmonicity in deoxy-hemoglobin and myoglobin.

1993

In this work we study the temperature dependence of the Soret band lineshape of deoxymyoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin, in the range 300-20 K. To fit the measured spectra we use an approach originally proposed by Champion and coworkers (Srajer et al. 1986; Srajer and Champion 1991). The band profile is modelled as a Voigt function that accounts for the coupling with low frequency vibrational modes, whereas the coupling with high frequency modes is responsible for the vibronic structure of the spectra. Moreover, owing to the position of the iron atom out of the mean heme plane, inhomogeneous broadening brings about a non-Gaussian distribution of 0-0 electronic transition frequencies. The reporte…

Dynamic properties of some β-chain mutant hemoglobins

1995

The thermal behavior of the Soret band relative to the carbonmonoxy derivatives of some beta-chain mutant hemoglobins is studied in the temperature range 300-10 K and compared to that of wild-type carbonmonoxy hemoglobin. The band profile at various temperatures is modeled as a Voigt function that accounts for homogeneous broadening and for the coupling with high- and low-frequency vibrational modes, while inhomogeneous broadening is taken into account with a gaussian distribution of purely electronic transition frequencies. The various contributions to the over-all bandwidth are singled out with this analysis and their temperature dependence, in turn, gives information on structural and dy…

Structure-dynamics-function relationships in Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) myoglobin. An optical spectroscopy and flash photolysis study on functi…

1993

In this work we report the thermal behavior (10–300 K) of the Soret band lineshape of deoxy and carbonmonoxy derivatives of Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) and horse myoglobins together with their carbon monoxide recombination kinetics after flash photolysis; the results are compared to analogous data relative to sperm whale myoglobin. The Soret band profile is modeled as a Voigt function that accounts for the coupling with high and low frequency vibrational modes, while inhomogeneous broadening is taken into account with suitable distributions of purely electronic transition frequencies. This analysis makes it possible to isolate the various contributions to the overall lineshape that; in…

Generation of CO2-rich melts during basalt magma ascent and degassing

2013

International audience; To test mechanisms of basaltic ma gma degassing, continuous decompressions of volatile-bearing (2.7-3.8 wt% H2O, 600-1300 ppm CO2) Stromboli melts were performed from 250-200 to 50-25 MPa at 1180-1140°C. Ascent rates were varied from 0.25 to ~ 1.5 m/s. Glasses after decompression show a wide range of textures, from totally bubble-free to bubble-rich, the latter with bubble number densities from 104 to 106/cm3, similar to Stromboli pumices. Vesicularities range from 0 to ~ 20 vol%. Final melt H2O concentrations are homogeneous and always close to solubilities. In contrast, the rate of vesiculation controls the final melt CO2 concentration. High vesicularity charges ha…

Polymorphism and solvates of flecainide base

2013

Flecainide base is pharmaceutically active substance used for production of flecainide acetate which is known in market as Tambacor, Almarytm, Apocard, Ecrinal or Flecaine. It is determined that flecainide base forms four polymorphic forms abbreviated as Ib, IIb, IIIb and IVb. Flecainide base form Ib is thermodynamically stable form at laboratory temperature while form IIIb is stable at higher temperatures. Flecainide form Ib absorbs water in its structure between layers and forms non-stoichiometric hydrate. Flecainide base binds with organic solvents and form monosolvates. Flecainide base form Ib crystallizes in orthorhombic crystals with lattice parameters a = 27.88 Å, b = 13.78 Å, c = 9.…

Problems in Precise Measurement of Tidal Volumes

1998

Respiratory gas flows and volumes can conveniently be measured by pneumo-tachography.3 However, the pneumotachographic signal depends on gas temperature, humidity, and composition, and therefore the achievable precision of measurement is limited to about 5–10%2,8 — which is not sufficient for determining the human ventilation distribution with satisfactory accuracy.6,7,5 As a — potentially more accurate — alternative, a plethysmographic method may be used in which the tested subject breathes out of and into bags that are suspended in a large tank of constant volume (Figure 1). Volume V and pressure P in the system (consisting of tank, tubings, valves, and the subject) are related via Boyle-…
