Comparative effects of dilator drugs on human penile dorsal artery and deep dorsal vein

1998

The present study was designed to characterize the response of human penile dorsal artery and deep dorsal vein to dilator drugs used in the diagnosis and treatment of erectile dysfunction with special emphasis on the effects on sympathetic neurotransmission. Ring segments of penile dorsal artery and deep dorsal vein were obtained from 20 multi-organ donors during procurement of organs for transplantation. The rings (3 ;mm long) were suspended in organ bath chambers for isometric recording of tension. We then studied the relaxant responses to prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), papaverine (PV), sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and linsidomine chlorhydrate (SIN-1), and ana…

Correlation between non-invasive myocardial work indices and main parameters of systolic and diastolic function

2020

Abstract Aims The present study sought to evaluate the correlation between indices of non-invasive myocardial work (MW) and left ventricle (LV) size, traditional and advanced parameters of LV systolic and diastolic function by 2D echocardiography (2DE). Methods and results A total of 226 (85 men, mean age: 45 ± 13 years) healthy subjects were enrolled at 22 collaborating institutions of the Normal Reference Ranges for Echocardiography (NORRE) study. Global work index (GWI), global constructive work (GCW), global work waste (GWW), and global work efficiency (GWE) were estimated from LV pressure-strain loops using custom software. Peak LV pressure was estimated non-invasively from brachial ar…

Is there a relationship between varicocele and testosterone levels?

2019

The goal of this work was to study the relationship between presence of varicocele and testosterone serum levels in adulthood.A comparative, cross-sectional study of 387 men who consulted for erectile dysfunction. Age, body mass index (BMI), diabetes (DM), and presence of varicocele were related to testosterone levels through uni- and multi-variate analysis.A total of 248 cases (70.8%) had no varicocele, 46 (13.1%) had grade I varicocele, 36 (10.3%) grade II, and 20 (5.7%) grade III. The mean total testosterone levels were 4.77 ng/mL in the non-varicocele group and 4.34 ng/mL in the varicocele group (We were not able to establish a relationship between the presence of varicocele and decreas…

Effect of nighttime aircraft noise exposure on endothelial function and stress hormone release in healthy adults.

2013

Aims Aircraft noise disturbs sleep, and long-term exposure has been shown to be associated with increases in the prevalence of hypertension and an overall increased risk for myocardial infarction. The exact mechanisms responsible for these cardiovascular effects remain unclear. Methods and results We performed a blinded field study in 75 healthy volunteers (mean age 26 years), who were exposed at home, in random order, to one control pattern (no noise) and two different noise scenarios [30 or 60 aircraft noise events per night with an average maximum sound pressure level (SPL) of 60 dB(A)] for one night each. We performed polygraphy during each study night. Noise caused a worsening in sleep…

Lung Preservation With Perfadex or Celsior in Clinical Transplantation: A Retrospective Single-Center Analysis of Outcomes.

2015

BACKGROUND Despite improvement of lung preservation by the introduction of low-potassium dextran (LPD) solution, ischemia-reperfusion injury remains a major contributor to early post-lung transplant graft dysfunction and mortality. After favorable experimental data, Celsior solution was used in our clinical lung transplant program. Data were compared with our historic LPD cohort. METHODS Between January 2002 and January 2005, 209 consecutive lung transplantations were performed with LPD. These were compared to 208 transplants between February 2005 and September 2007 with Celsior. Endpoints included posttransplant PaO2/FiO2 ratio at different timepoints after intensive care unit (ICU) admiss…

Discoidin domain receptor 1 gene variants are associated with decreased white matter fractional anisotropy and decreased processing speed in schizoph…

2019

Abstract DDR1 has been linked to schizophrenia (SZ) and myelination. Here, we tested whether DDR1 variants in people at risk for SZ influence white matter (WM) structural variations and cognitive processing speed (PS). First, following a case-control design (Study 1), SZ patients (N = 1193) and controls (N = 1839) were genotyped for rs1264323 and rs2267641 at DDR1, and the frequencies were compared. We replicated the association between DDR1 and SZ (rs1264323, adjusted P = 0.015). Carriers of the rs1264323AA combined with the rs2267641AC or CC genotype are at risk to develop SZ compared to the other genotype combinations. Second, SZ patients (Study 2, N = 194) underwent an evaluation of PS …

Long-term urinary dysfunction after mesorectal excision: a prospective study with intraoperative electrophysiological confirmation of nerve preservat…

2006

Bladder dysfunctions are well-recognized complications after nerve-sparing mesorectal excision for rectal cancer. This study sought to symptomatically analyze the extent of recovery from major and minor urinary symptoms in patients with signs of bladder denervation.Sixty-two patients with mesorectal excision for rectal cancer were investigated prospectively. Pelvic autonomic nerve preservation (PANP) was assessed macroscopically and with the aid of intraoperative electrical stimulation of pelvic autonomic nerves (INS). Bladder function was evaluated with the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and the Quality of life index (Qol). Median follow-up was 20 months (range 3-40 months).Fo…

Two yr mycophenolate mofetil plus low-dose calcineurin inhibitor for renal dysfunction after liver transplant

2009

We assessed the efficacy and outcome of low through level of calcineurin inhibitors (CNI) and introducing mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) in liver transplant (LT) patients with CNI-related renal dysfunction. Thirty LT patients were converted to combined therapy and compared with 30 patients used as a contemporary control group receiving CNI only. The two groups were matched for sex, age, months after LT, immunosuppressive treatment, creatinine level, presence of diabetes and calculated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) via Cockroft-Gault method. After two years, in the MMF serum creatinine decreased from 1.65 mg/dL (range 1.33-3.5) to 1.4 mg/dL (range 0.9-4.7) (p = 0.002) and GFR increased from …

Microalbuminuria and early endothelial activation in essential hypertension

2006

We hypothesized that in essential hypertensive patients (EHs), plasma levels of pro-atherogenic adhesion molecules would be increased and related with urine albumin excretion (UAE). Thus, this study was aimed at evaluating biochemical markers of endothelial activation and their relationship with UAE in a group of patients with uncomplicated EH. In basal condition soluble forms of adhesion molecules intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 and vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM)-1, as well as 24-h UAE were assayed. One hundred patients with essential hypertension and no diabetes or ultrasonographic evidence of atherosclerosis were included in the study. Seventy normotensive healthy subjec…
