Critical single proximal left arterial descending coronary artery stenosis to mimic chronic myocardial ischemia: a new model induced by minimal invas…

2008

Background/Aims: The present report examines a new pig model for progressive induction of high-grade stenosis, for the study of chronic myocardial ischemia and the dynamics of collateral vessel growth. Methods: Thirty-nine Landrace pigs were instrumented with a novel experimental stent (GVD stent) in the left anterior descending coronary artery. Eight animals underwent transthoracic echocardiography at rest and under low-dose dobutamine. Seven animals were examined by nuclear PET and SPECT analysis. Epi-, mid- and endocardial fibrosis and the numbers of arterial vessels were examined by histology. Results: Functional analysis showed a…

Are the dysfunctional beliefs that predict worry different from those that predict obsessions?

2007

Chronic worry present in Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and obsessions characteristic of the Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder (OCD) are cognitive phenomena that share some features, but they also differ on others. Based on current cognitive approaches, dysfunctional meta-cognitive beliefs underlie the development and/or maintenance of both GAD and OCD. However, to date, there has been little empirical evidence about the differences between the beliefs that predict the occurrence of obsessions and those that predict worry. This study focuses on the search for these differences and examines to what extent worry and obsessions are associated with a similar or different pattern of dysfunctiona…

Modality-specific dysfunctional neural processing of social-abstract and non-social-concrete information in schizophrenia

2021

Highlights • Social/non-social information processing in three modalities was investigated in SZ. • SZ showed reduced activation for social information only in gesture modality. • Reduced activation in SZ was observed for non-social information only in speech. • Neural Neural processing in bimodal condition is not different between patients and controls.

Impact of diabetes mellitus on outcomes in patients with myocardial infarction according to varying degrees of left ventricular systolic dysfunction.

2022

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is known to contribute to unfavorable short- and long-term outcomes in patients with myocardial infarction (MI). Particularly poor outcomes are associated with left ventricular systolic dysfunction after an MI. The aim of our study was to compare the short- and long-term outcomes of MI in patients with DM and varied degrees of left ventricular systolic dysfunction with the corresponding outcomes in a non-diabetic control group. Methods: This analysis focused on patients with MI registered in the Polish National Registry of Acute Coronary Syndrome between 2009 and 2011. For the purposes of this analysis, diabetic patients were additionally stratified into t…

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors, diabetes, and oxidative stress

2020

Abstract Diabetes and related metabolic diseases have a high prevalence with increasing incidence and create a significant socioeconomic burden by their contribution to global mortality and disability adjusted life years. Whereas the contribution of communicable disease to global deaths decreased during the last 25 years, the contribution by chronic noncommunicable disease and environmental factors increased within this time period. According to data of the Global Burden of Disease Study high fasting plasma glucose and high total cholesterol rank in place 3 and 4 in the list of global health risk factors, just behind high blood pressure and smoking. Diabetes adversely affects endothelial an…

Power estimation for non-standardized multisite studies

2016

A concern for researchers planning multisite studies is that scanner and T1-weighted sequence-related biases on regional volumes could overshadow true effects, especially for studies with a heterogeneous set of scanners and sequences. Current approaches attempt to harmonize data by standardizing hardware, pulse sequences, and protocols, or by calibrating across sites using phantom-based corrections to ensure the same raw image intensities. We propose to avoid harmonization and phantom-based correction entirely. We hypothesized that the bias of estimated regional volumes is scaled between sites due to the contrast and gradient distortion differences between scanners and sequences. Given this…

Despite the positive aspects of information technology (IT) use, it is common for users to experience negative IT incidents. Examples of negative IT incidents include getting lost in an unfamiliar country due to a dysfunctional map application and missing a monetary insurance benefit due to the failure of an activity tracker application. Such incidents can harm IT providers by giving rise to user dissatisfaction, discontinued use, switching, and negative word-of-mouth. To minimize this harm, it is important to understand how users cope after negative incidents. Specifically, information systems (IS) researchers have called for research that uncovers the complex interplay of IT users’ coping…

Vínculos familiares e inclusión social. Variables predictoras de la conducta prosocial en la infancia

2018

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between prosocial behavior and family environment variables (attachment to the mother and father and abandonment by the mother and father), personal variables (emotional instability, aggression, and coping strategies), and variables that relate to the immediate social environment (peer acceptance and rejection). This study also examined the predictors of prosocial behavior. Prosocial behavior is a personal protective factor that encourages positive relationships between peers and promotes personal and social adjustment behaviors (Mikolajewski, Chavarria, Moltisanti, Hart & Taylor, 2014). A study with a sample of 1,447 chi…
