The aim of the PeTEX-project is to establish an e-Learning platform for the development, implementation, and delivery of educational training programs in the field of manufacturing engineering. Gap Filling of Biophysical Parameter Time Series with Multi-Output Gaussian Processes

In this work we evaluate multi-output (MO) Gaussian Process (GP) models based on the linear model of coregionalization (LMC) for estimation of biophysical parameter variables under a gap filling setup. In particular, we focus on LAI and fAPAR over rice areas. We show how this problem cannot be solved with standard single-output (SO) GP models, and how the proposed MO-GP models are able to successfully predict these variables even in high missing data regimes, by implicitly performing an across-domain information transfer. This paper presents an experiential learning lab focused on building a digital storytelling using both robots with LEGO Mindstorms and virtual worlds with Kodu Game Lab. The experiential laboratory (32 hours) has involved 33 children of secondary schools in a collaborative learning setting in formal (school labs) and informal learning context (external cultural association). In a first phase of the activity children used Lego Mindstorm robotic kits, assembling them and creating a physical environment (pasterboard arenas) where robots were programmed for moving and taking actions. Tiivistelmä – Abstract Tutkielman tarkoituksena oli selvittää yläkoulun oppilaiden ja opettajien mielipiteitä sanaston oppimiseen suunnatuista tehtävistä; millaiset tehtävät heidän mielestään sopivat sanaston oppimiseen yläkoulussa. Samalla selvitettiin sanaston oppimista koulun ulkopuolella sekä sanaston oppimiseen käytettyä aikaa. Oppilaiden ja opettajien mielipiteitä verrattiin toisiinsa. Tutkimus toteutettiin Tampereella vuonna 2010. Osallistujina olivat kolme englannin opettajaa ja heidän luokkansa, yksi kutakin luokka-astetta, yhteensä 52 oppilasta. Tämän proseminaarityön tarkoituksena oli tutkia, miten maahanmuuttajan akkulturaation taso ja maahanmuuton aikainen ikä vaikuttavat saavutettuun suomen kielen osaamistasoon. Lisäksi tutkimuksen avulla yritettiin löytää mahdollisia eroja pakolaisten ja vapaaehtoisten maahanmuuttajien suomen kielen oppimiseen vaikuttavien asioiden välillä. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli täydentää aikaisempaa tutkimusta maahanmuuttajien isäntäkielen oppimisesta, koska aiempi tutkimus on keskittynyt lähes ainoastaan maihin, joiden pääkielenä käytetään englantia. Vieraan kielen opiskelussa ja opettamisessa on käytetty pitkään apuvälineinä erilaisia äänitteitä. Kuitenkin vasta lähiaikoina äänitteitä on alettu käyttää myös luokkahuoneen ulkopuolella. Nykyisin monissa suomalaisissa peruskouluissa käytetään englannin kielen oppikirjoja, joissa tulee mukana myös oppilaan CD. Tämä CD on tarkoitettu oppilaan itsenäiseen käyttöön tukemaan vieraan kielen opiskelua kotona. Koska CD:n käyttö on vielä uutta, ei sitä ole tutkittukaan. Aikaisemmat tutkimukset vieraan kielen kuuntelemisesta keskittyvät lähinnä luokkahuonetilanteisiin. Vain muutama aikaisempi tutkimus mainitsee lyhyesti itsenäisen kuuntelun tärkeydestä.
