[EN] Excavations at Córcoles, Guadalajara, Spain (MN 4) in October 1987, yielded a mandible and several isolated teeth of a strange suiform with tubulidentate cheek teeth, initially interpreted to be the remains of Tubulidentata. The specimens are complete enough to remove any doubt about which Order (Artiodactyla) and Superfamily (Suoidea) they belong to. The locality of El Salt (Middle Paleolithic, Alcoy, Spain) is mainly known by having one of the youngest Neanderthals records of the southeastern Iberian Peninsula. In this work, we have analysed the herpetofaunal fossils from the upper part of stratigraphic unit Xb, dated at 52.3 ± 4.6 ka (MIS 3). The faunal list is composed by three taxa of anurans (Alyte obstetricans, Bufo bufo s.l., and Epidalea calamita), one taxon of blanid (Blanus cinereus s.l.), two taxa of lizards (Chalcides bedriagai and cf. Sera collected in the course of a prospective study carried out in Prague in 1975–1983 were assayed for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) antibodies. Women with cervical neoplasia proven by biopsy at enrollment possessed antibodies to peptides derived from E2, E4 and E7 proteins of HPV16 and to virus-like particles (VLPs) of HPV16, -18 and -33 significantly more frequently than matched controls. Women without cervical neoplasia at enrollment who developed the disease in the course of the study differed from matched controls by a higher prevalence of antibodies against VLPs of HPV16 and -18 but not against early antigens of HPV16. Oncogenic HPVs are necessarily involved in cervical cancer but their role in oral carcinogenesis is debated. To detect HPV in oral cancer, 38 cases of formalin fixed-paraffin embedded OSCC were studied by both DNA genotyping (MY09/11 L1 consensus primers in combination with GP5-GP6 primer pair followed by sequencing) and immunohistochemistry (monoclonal Abs against capsid protein and HPV-E7 protein, K1H8 DAKO and clone 8C9 INVITROGEN, respectively). Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX), a pleomorphic superficial cutaneous tumor of low-grade malignancy, shares many morphologic features with malignant melanoma (MM) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Absence of S-100, keratin, and desmin immunoreactivity is the clue for this diagnosis. In a search for positive markers, we tested 26 cases of AFX with 2 antibodies: O13 (CD99) and protein gene product 9.5 (PGP9.5). We also included 10 cases of poorly differentiated SCC and 10 cases of MM in the study. AbstractA newly collected specimen of the enigmatic coleoid genus Longibelus is recorded from lower Turonian strata along the River Shadrinka in Sakhalin (Russian Far East). To date, this is the first record of Late Cretaceous coleoid cephalopods from the island and, in fact, from the entire Pacific coast of the Russian Federation. Lithological characteristics, coupled with published geochemical analyses (δ13C and Corg content), suggest the habitat of this coleoid taxon to have been the middle to outer (i.e. distal) shelf. In this work, we compared microwear features and enamel thickness from upper molars (M1 and M2) of extinct Xerinae squirrels from the Miocene of Namibia (Vulcanisciurus sp) and the Iberian Peninsula (Atlantoxerus nov. sp. and Heteroxerus rubricati). We also examined the microwear from young and adult specimens of one extant squirrel, Atlantoxerus getulus, to compare it with the extinct species. Both, the microwear features and enamel thickness showed that the Miocene African species presented a more abrasive diet than the Iberian ones.
