Discovery of the optical counterpart to the X-ray pulsar SAX J2103.5+4545

We report optical and infrared photometric and spectroscopic observations that identify the counterpart to the 358.6-s X-ray transient pulsar SAX J2103.5+4545 with a moderately reddened V=14.2 B0Ve star. This identification makes SAX J2103.5+4545 the Be/X-ray binary with the shortest orbital period known, Porb= 12.7 days. The amount of absorption to the system has been estimated to be Av=4.2+-0.3, which for such an early-type star implies a distance of about 6.5 kpc. The optical spectra reveal major and rapid changes in the strength and shape of the Halpha line. The HADES RV Programme with HARPS-N@TNG VIII. Gl15A: A multiple wide planetary system sculpted by binary interaction

We present 20 years of radial velocity (RV) measurements of the M1 dwarf Gl15A, combining 5 years of intensive RV monitoring with the HARPS-N spectrograph with 15 years of archival HIRES/Keck RV data. We carry out an MCMC-based analysis of the RV time series, inclusive of Gaussian Process (GP) approach to the description of stellar activity induced RV variations. Our analysis confirms the Keplerian nature and refines the orbital solution for the 11.44-day period super Earth, Gl15A\,b, reducing its amplitude to $1.68^{+0.17}_{-0.18}$ m s$^{-1}$ ($M \sin i = 3.03^{+0.46}_{-0.44}$ M$_\oplus$), and successfully models a long-term trend in the combined RV dataset in terms of a Keplerian orbit wi…
A complete X-ray spectral coverage of the 2010 May-June outbursts of Circinus X-1

Circinus X-1 is a neutron-star-accreting X-ray binary in a wide (P$_{\rm orb}$ = 16.6 d), eccentric orbit. After two years of relatively low X-ray luminosity, in May 2010 Circinus X-1 went into outburst, reaching 0.4 Crab flux. This outburst lasted for about two orbital cycles and was followed by another shorter and fainter outburst in June. We focus here on the broadband X-ray spectral evolution of the source as it spans about three order of magnitudes in flux. We attempt to relate luminosity, spectral shape, local absorption, and orbital phase. Does interferometry probe thermalization?

We carry out a systematic study of interferometry radii in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions within a two-dimensional transport model. We compute the transverse radii R_o and R_s as a function of p_t for various values of the Knudsen number, which measures the degree of thermalization in the system. They converge to the hydrodynamical limit much more slowly (by a factor 3) than elliptic flow. This solves most of the HBT puzzle for central collisions: R_o/R_s is in the range 1.1-1.2 for realistic values of the Knudsen number, much closer to experimental data ($\simeq 1$) than the value 1.5 from hydrodynamical calculations. Recently it has become apparent that event-by-event fluctuations in the initial state of hydrodynamical modelling of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions are crucial in order to understand the full centrality dependence of the elliptic flow coefficient v_2. In particular, in central collisions the density fluctuations play a major role in generating the spatial eccentricity in the initial state. This raises the question to what degree high P_T physics, in particular leading-parton energy loss, which takes place in the background of an evolving medium, is sensitive to the presence of the event-by-event density fluctuations in the background. Azimuthally Differential Pion Femtoscopy in Pb-Pb Collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV

We present the first azimuthally differential measurements of the pion source size relative to the second harmonic event plane in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon pair of √sNN = 2.76 TeV. The measurements have been performed in the centrality range 0%-50% and for pion pair transverse momenta 0.2 < kT < 0.7 GeV/c. We find that the Rside and Rout radii, which characterize the pion source size in the directions perpendicular and parallel to the pion transverse momentum, oscillate out of phase, similar to what was observed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Detecting Eccentricity and Demagnetization Fault of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators in Transient State

Eccentricity and demagnetization fault of a four-pole 1.5 kW surface mounted permanent-magnet synchronous-generator (PMSG) were modelled by using time-discretised finite element analysis (FEA). Both fault types are caused by magnetic asymmetry in the generator. The faulty behaviour of a PMSG under transient operating condition is studied with FEA. Two search coils were wound around stator teeth on opposite sides of the rotor. The induced voltage from these coils will be equal in healthy case. A fault is detected when the induced voltages are non-identical. Red-green vs. blue-yellow spatio-temporal contrast sensitivity across the visual field

We measured contrast sensitivity (CS) to sinusoidal spatio-temporal patterns isolating the red-green and blue-yellow mechanisms, at 21 locations in the visual field (including the fovea). These measurements complete the available data for the red-green mechanism at fovea and for both mechanisms outside fovea with non-stationary patterns. Chromatic detection surfaces are low-pass at fovea and CS decreases with eccentricity at a rate that depends on the spatial and temporal frequencies. Modelling Demagnetized Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators using Permeance Network Model with Variable Flux Sources

The partial demagnetization in a four-pole 1.5 kW surface mounted permanent-magnet synchronous-generator was modeled by permeance network model (PNM). The results were compared to a 2-D time-stepping finite element analysis (FEA). Both models where simulated in scenarios where one of the magnets where 20 % and 100 % demagntized and when none of the magnets where demagnetised. The results showed that the proposed PNM with variable magnetic flux sources matched the results of the FEA. The proposed method only need to invers the permeance matrix once before the time simulation, while the traditinal PNM need to invers it in every time step.
