Klimata pārmaiņas Ričarda Pouersa romānā "The Overstory"
2022
Darbs pēta klimata pārmaiņu fenomenu Ričarda Pouersa romānā The Overstory, analizējot to no ekokritikas perspektīvas.
Tale(s) of a forest – re-creation of a primeval forest in three environmental narratives
2020
We analyze three environmentally conscious works that are concerned with the state of Finnish forests: the documentary film Metsän tarina/Tale of a Forest (2012), the book with the same name (2013) and the series of short documentaries Tarinoita metsästä/Tales from the Forest (2013). By combining methods from arts research and ecology, we ask how the narratives adapt material from nature photography. The film and book present mythic stories and old Finnish beliefs about forests. They also contain references to cultural memory. Additionally, the biodiversity on display reflects a conventional practice to exhibit large or charismatic species. However, the ecological message remains only impli…
Broilerikulttuuri : lihateollisuuden kanat suomenkielisessä proosassa ja sarjakuvassa vuosina 1969–2019
2023
Caitrìona O’Reilly : From ecopoetry to ontopoetics
2022
Caitrìona O'Reilly's poetry is remarkable for its attention to the natural world, to fauna, flora, the four elements and landscapes; for its keen sense of nature's superior and mysterious beauty ("Atlantic", "Octopus", "Six Landscapes", "Bee on Agastache") but also fragility ("Polar", "Iceland"). Without question, it can be described as "ecopoetry". I will explore the fundamentals of O’Reilly’s "eco-conscious" and scholarly work, and show how, in her work, "ecopoetry" amounts to "ontopoetics", which is to be understood as "poetics of being". The natural world captured poetically by Caitrìona O'Reilly is a "perceived" world, i.e. a world seen, observed, felt, touched, heard by a subject. The…
Reflections of Hope and Anxiety in Audience Responses to Three Environmental Films
2023
This article discusses the results of a reception study of three environmental films with a focus on emotional reactions and the films’ influence on the respondents’ environmental awareness. The short experimental film Valtakunnat/Realms (Finland, 2018) envisions post-human life, and the potential destruction that the planet is being driven towards. To Teach a Bird to Fly (Finland, 2020), a short documentary fiction film about a woman raising critically endangered birds, imagines a future where the effects of climate change have been reversed. The documentary film The Biggest Little Farm (USA, 2018) follows a couple who buy a barren farm with the aim of restoring its biodiversity. Through t…
“Distant woods”: the matter of books and the modernist pastoral
2021
International audience; This paper is part of a broader project that aims to examine the importance of the materials used in the making of illustrated books from a medial and ecocritical perspective. I focus on a specific case study in which I explore the attitude to nature encapsulated in the use of and reference to wood in British interwar wood-engraved illustrated books. My departure point is the English artist Paul Nash’s Places (Heinemann, 1922), a short collection of prose poems and wood-engravings. An elegy produced at a time when Nash was trying to come to terms with the aftermath of the First World War, Places was published after he made the great war paintings depicting the human …
