Ecological Complex Systems
2008
Main aim of this topical issue is to report recent advances in noisy nonequilibrium processes useful to describe the dynamics of ecological systems and to address the mechanisms of spatio-temporal pattern formation in ecology both from the experimental and theoretical points of view. This is in order to understand the dynamical behaviour of ecological complex systems through the interplay between nonlinearity, noise, random and periodic environmental interactions. Discovering the microscopic rules and the local interactions which lead to the emergence of specific global patterns or global dynamical behaviour and the noises role in the nonlinear dynamics is an important, key aspect to unders…

Use of retail market data to assess prices and flows of non-wood forest products in Latvia
2020
In northern Europe, largest part of non-wood forest products (NWFPs) are gathered for recreational purposes and household consumption, but considerable amount of forest berries and mushrooms are sold as well. Retail market, largely invisible for the official statistics, reveals the lifestyle-related aspects of NWFP trade and may help to understand the flows of this ecosystem service when information on wholesale trade is inaccessible. The prices and flows of most common NWFPs â edible berries, mushrooms and tree sap â in the retail market in Latvia in 2017 and 2018 were analysed based on direct interviews with the sellers in marketplaces and telephone interviews with online retailers. T…

Una visione ecologica del territorio
2014
This study stems from the theoretical principle that environment protection and conservation have evolved from a constraint-based approach aimed at designating protected areas, to an ecosystem-based approach intended to protect and preserve biodiversity. The said approach identifies the ecological networks as a possible solution to the need for an ecological-functional connection between natural and semi-natural areas and areas of cultural interest, with the ultimate aim of implementing widespread environment protection “covering” the whole territory. An ecological network can be understood either as a set of natural (or semi-natural) areas interconnected through linear infrastructure or, i…
Connected Lands : new perspectives on Ecological Networks Planning
2017
The construction of an ecological network is a fairly complex operation, given that the components to be considered are strictly linked to the age-old problem of the relationship between man and the land, until now perhaps seen too much as a limiting relationship and not, as the use of this tool suggests, as a relationship to be safeguarded. It may represent the ideal way to reconcile human needs and the conservation of biodiversity for the sustainable management of land. This study on the ecological network represents a tool capable to contain habitat fragmentation trough a new perspective that integrates theoretical approaches and methods with planning models and experiences of local appl…
Le reti ecologiche nella pianificazione territoriale ordinaria. Primo censimento nazionale degli strumenti a scala locale
2010
Planning is a vast and complex subject, which represents for environmental policies one of the most important tools for the identification of suitable solutions to improve the relationship between man-territory and environmental resources. The general theme of the survey is the i…
Lipids and biopackaging
1997
Packaging is important to preserve food quality. It is a barrier to water vapor, gas, aroma, and solute migration between the food and the environment. With the recent increase in ecological consciousness, research has turned toward finding biodegradable materials. The different kinds of biopackaging are discussed with special focus on edible films. The aim of this review is to focus on the influence of lipids used in edible films, mainly for their efficiency as water-vapor barriers. The structure, degree of saturation, chainlength, physical state, shape and dimension of crystals, and distribution of lipids into the film influence the functional properties of the film. In general, the perfo…
A Holistic Vision of Smart Cities: An Opportunity for a Big Change
2016
The depletion of energy resources on the one hand, and the population growth on the other, forced the society at all levels (local, national and international) to turn its attention to the identification of new forms of protection of the environment and the waste reduction for a new eco-sustainable way of living. The process of massive urbanization already in place, exacerbated by the movement of large masses of people in search of a more human form of life, is putting severely under test the livability within our cities, bringing out the inefficiency of existing management and organization models. Daisaku Ikeda said: “Certainly, the density of urban populations means that problems are conc…
Cities facing the Wild
2021
Untamed ecosystems and plots of wild nature increasingly constitute large parts of contemporary urban spaces. They are often the unbidden result of a long-standing lack of maintenance as well as of the uncontrolled flourishing of weeds produced by the pesticide absolute ban. But they are also something more. Many recently implemented urban open spaces deal with wild nature to solve some of the most urgent tasks of the contemporary cities: reclaiming areas fallen into disuse, designing sustainable infrastructures, revitalizing valuable public spaces, enhancing the ecological footprint of new developments, suggesting new practices and social ritual, reducing management costs, fighting climate…
