Educational intentions, cognitive skills and earnings expectations of French undergraduates

2014

International audience; This article aims to study the earnings expectations of first-year students at a French university. Our findings highlight the importance of the environment in which students make their choices about education. Expected earnings are proportionally higher when their parents seem to be involved in the careers guidance, taking into account the effect of parental socio-economic status. The positive opinion of parents about the orientation or the connection between the discipline and the father's occupation are generally associated with higher earnings. In addition, our results show a strong impact of cognitive variables which are far more significant than variables relat…

Multi-product firms and product variety

2008

The goal of this paper is to study the role of multi-product firms in the market provision of product variety. The analysis is conducted using the spokes model of non-localized competition proposed by Chen and Riordan (2007). Firstly, we show that multi-product firms are at a competitive disadvantage vis-a-vis single-product firms and can only emerge if economies of scope are sufficiently strong. Secondly, under duopoly product variety may be higher or lower with respect to both the first best and the monopolistically competitive equilibrium. However, within a relevant range of parameter values duopolists drastically restrict their product range in order to relax price competition, and as a…

Designing ecolabels in order to mitigate market failures: an application to agrofood products

2007

For the market for ecofriendly characteristics of agrofood producs effectively, ùeans of mitigationg asymmetric information, informational overload and public goods properties are necessary. Ecolabel success requires a design and an implementation capable of mitigating simultaneously these three sources of market failures. Our contribution differs from many to date by (1) introducing and analyzing the informational overload as a source of market falure and (2) considering the ecolabel, not only as tool to re-establish information summetry between the producer and consumer but also as a way to overcome international overload and public goods problems. We analyze how these sources of market f…

On the property of diffusion in the spatial error model.

2005

International audience; The aim of this paper is to illustrate the property of global spillover effects in the first-order spatial autoregressive error model and the associated diffusion process of spatial shocks. An application is provided on a sample of 145 regions over 1989–1999 and highlights the most influential regions.

Les économistes et l'éducation

2006

Dynamic error-components models with autocorrelated disturbances : a brief survey

1997

Studying dynamic error component models with autocorrelated disturbances has started very recently in econometrics analysis of panel data. There is no article or book which tackles this topic exhaustively. In this study, a brief survey of these models is presented. The within, between, OLS, GLS, maximum likelihood and instrumental variable estimators are especially analysed, and the particular characteristics of these models are underlined each time.

Endogenous growth and neoclassical school

1996
