Studies on the genus Capparis L. (Capparaceae) in Lao PDR. II: A new species from the Khammouan karst

2017

A new species of Capparis, Capparis lanceolatifolia, is described and illustrated from central Lao PDR, where it is known from a single limestone doline in the Hinboun District, Khammouan Province. The new species is characterized by narrowly lanceolate leaves, racemose inflorescence bearing trifid bracts and small size of flower. Its affinities with related taxa and conservation status are discussed.

Two new resinicolous mycocalicioid fungi from the Acadian Forest: One new to science, the other new to North America

2016

Abstract Chaenothecopsis claydenii is described as new from New Brunswick, Canada, and C. eugenia, also from New Brunswick, is reported for the first time in North America. Both species grow on the resin of Picea spp. in the Acadian Forest and bring to 91 the number of calicioid lichens and fungi known for the ecoregion. Diagnoses and information on the taxonomy and ecology of each species is provided, as is a worldwide key to the mycocalicioid taxa growing on conifer resin.

Biological quality metrics: their variability and appropriate scale for assessing Streams

2006

The concept of spatial scale is at the research frontier in ecology, and although focus has been placed on trying to determine the role of spatial scale in structuring communities, there still is a further need to standardize which organism groups are to be used at which scale and under which circumstances in environmental assessment. This paper contributes to the understanding of the variability at different spatial scales (reach, stream, river basin) of metrics characterizing communities of different biological quality elements (macrophytes, fishes, macroinvertebrates and benthic diatoms) as defined by the Water Framework Directive. For this purpose, high-quality reaches from medium-sized…

Correspondence between regional delineations and spatial patterns in macroinvertebrate assemblages of boreal headwater streams

2002

AbstractGeographical stratification may provide a useful framework for stream management programs, yet most studies testing the utility of such stratifications have been conducted in temperate regions. We studied the correspondence between regional delineations (5 ecoregions, 11 subecoregions), environmental characteristics, and benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages in 156 boreal headwater streams in Finland, using a combination of principal components analysis, nonmetric multidimensional scaling, and discriminant function analysis (DFA). Both stream characteristics and macroinvertebrate assemblage structure showed a closer correspondence to ecoregions than to subecoregions, a pattern partl…

Some European green roof norms and guidelines through the lens of biodiversity : do ecoregions and plant traits also matter?

2018

Abstract Green infrastructure and in particular green roofs are crucial to meet the challenge of sustainable urbanisation fostered by the current European Research and Innovation agenda. Several documents were issued in the last decades in Europe for regulating the design, construction and up-keep of roof greening. In particular, the actual German guidelines have been widely adopted as a reference basis for green roof design and regulation worldwide, because of its exhaustiveness and proven building- and landscaping tradition. With the aim to assess the effectiveness of green roof guidelines and norms in supporting plant and soil biodiversity in different ecoregions, and particularly of the…

Workshop on ICES reference points (WKREF2)

2022

The ICES Workshop on ICES reference points (WKREF2) was tasked review the WKREF1 report and based on the outcome develop updated guidelines for the ICES reference points system and recommendations for ACOM consideration. The WKREF1 report has suggested 5 key recommendations to simplify and harmonise the ICES reference points framework representing a major change to the current guidelines. At WKREF2, we detailed discussions and four key concerns were raised about the proposed approach. The first related to the simplification of rules to define Blim. Around two thirds of category 1 stocks would end up as WKREF1 “Blim Type 2” where Blim would be set as a fraction of B0. The Allee effect or “de…

Scale-related patterns in the spatial and environmental components of stream macroinvertebrate assemblage variation

2007

Aim  We examined the relative contributions of spatial gradients and local environmental conditions to macroinvertebrate assemblages of boreal headwater streams at three hierarchical extents: bioregion, ecoregion and drainage system. We also aimed to identify the environmental variables most strongly related to assemblage structure at each study scale, and to assess how the importance of these variables is related to regional context and spatial structuring at different scales. Location  Northern Finland (62–68° N, 25–32° E). Methods  Variation in macroinvertebrate data was partitioned using partial canonical correspondence analysis into components explained by spatial variables (nine terms…

Application of the new multimetric MMI_PL index for biological water quality assessment in reference and human-impacted streams (Poland, the Slovak R…

2014

Abstract A new multimetric MMI_PL index, which is based on the macroinvertebrate composition and combines six single key metrics, has already been implemented in Poland according to the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive. The objectives of our survey were to assess the biological water quality using the new multimetric MMI_PL index in both reference and human-impacted streams, to analyze whether the values of the new multimetric index properly reflect the ecological status of the water in upland and mountain streams as well as to determine which environmental factors influence the distribution of benthic macroinvertebrates and the values of the metrics. The study was carried o…

Role of hydrological and hydromorphological factors in ecological quality of medium-sized lowland streams

2010

The development of biological communities is an important research issue regarding biological quality elements. However, it is still uncertain how different organism groups and their metrics are affected by different environmental factors. A study of high-quality sites of medium-sized lowland streams typical for Latvia (ecoregion Baltic province) was carried out with an emphasis on hydrological and hydromorphological characteristics. The investigations were carried out within the STAR project using the project designated standard methods. We found that the level of saprobity according to benthic macroinvertebrates was mainly linked with substrate type and stream depth. The trophic diatom in…
