Internationalization of knowledge-intensive SMEs: The role of network relationships in the entry to a psychically distant market
2009
Abstract Current research emphasizes the role of extant network relationships in the international development of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Inevitably, these relationships are there, most likely, to provide linkages with and facilitate entry into psychically and geographically close markets. But what of firms entering psychically distant markets, for strategic reasons, as is usually the case with knowledge-intensive SMEs? Will existing network relationships remain important, and will they operate in a similar way. In this exploratory case study, in which eight Finnish software SMEs enter the Japanese market, the decision to enter these markets is found to be for strategic …
Mind Your Space! Desk Sharing Working Environments and Employee Commitment in Austria
2019
This paper empirically examines the influence of desk sharing on the various forms of employee commitment. Previous literature has examined the influence of innovative workspace on employee satisfaction as well as the possible the benefits and disadvantages of desk sharing, but not the influence desk sharing may have on employee commitment. Our study examines the level of commitment in organisations that apply desk sharing compared to those with traditional office settings, finding that desk sharing does not necessarily have a negative influence on commitment. Indeed, desk sharing employees show higher level of affective commitment when applied moderately. However, a radical application of …
Designing a multi-layer edge-computing platform for energy-efficient and delay-aware offloading in vehicular networks
2021
Abstract Vehicular networks are expected to support many time-critical services requiring huge amounts of computation resources with very low delay. However, such requirements may not be fully met by vehicle on-board devices due to their limited processing and storage capabilities. The solution provided by 5G is the application of the Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) paradigm, which represents a low-latency alternative to remote clouds. Accordingly, we envision a multi-layer job-offloading scheme based on three levels, i.e., the Vehicular Domain, the MEC Domain and Backhaul Network Domain. In such a view, jobs can be offloaded from the Vehicular Domain to the MEC Domain, and even further o…
A New Tool for the Modeling of AI and Machine Learning Applications: Random Walk-Jump Processes
2011
Published version of an article from the book: Hybrid artificial intelligent systems, Lecture notes in computer science. The original publication is available at www.springerlink.com, http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-21219-2_2 There are numerous applications in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) where the criteria for decisions are based on testing procedures. The most common tools used in such random phenomena involve Random Walks (RWs). The theory of RWs and its applications have gained an increasing research interest since the start of the last century. [1]. In this context, we note that a RW is, usually, defined as a trajectory involving a series of successive ran…

KNOWLEDGE FOR RECOVER AND VALORIZATION OF SICILIAN RURAL ARCHITECTURE The Pintorna S. Barbara farm in the Madonie mountain area The Pintorna S. Barbara farm located in the territory of Geraci Siculo (PA), a small rural village in the Madonie area, represents a relevant example of rural architecture for his constructive and typological aspects, but also for the potential that it offers in a project of compatible recover. In the same way of other farms that marks the sicilian territory, this one at the moment is in an abandonment state because of the absence of mainteinance during the last year so that it risks to be ruined. The study wants to evidence the principal materic contructive, funct…
Thermoelastic Stress Analysis of modified Transverse Cut Tensile composite specimens under pure Mode II fatigue delamination
2018
The present work investigates the behaviour of a Transvers Crack Tensile (TCT) specimen undergoing fatigue loading, by means of a Thermoelastic Stress Analysis (TSA) experimental setup. The TCT is a tensile composite specimen where a number of internal layers are cut through the beam width. The presence of such transverse notch favours the formation of interlaminar Mode II delaminations, starting from the notch tips and propagating between the cut and continuous plies. In this work, a modification is adopted to the classic TCT specimen, where insert films, mimicking artificial delaminations, are laid across the notch tips. This is done with the purpose to favour a pure Mode II and a symmetr…
Correlation between milling parameters and microstructure characteristics of nanocrystalline copper powder prepared via a high energy planetary ball …
2007
The microstructure evolution of Cu-nanostructured powders versus the ball milling conditions was investigated by whole peak profile powder pattern modeling method. This method allows defining in some approach the characteristics of as-milled Cu powder microstructure in terms of crystallite size, type and density of dislocations and twin faults density. It is shown that the change of microstructure characteristics of as-milled Cu powder versus the ball milling conditions (under constant time of the ball milling) depend on only some energy parameters of the milling, for example, average size of crystallite is uniquely defined by energy of the shock, whereas the portion of edge and screw compo…
Laser-Calorimetric Study of Fundamental Absorption Edge in Pb,La(ZrTi)O3 (PLZT) Perovskite Ceramics
2000
The values of the light absorption coefficient of PLZT 10/65/35 ceramics at selected wavelengths have been obtained by laser calorimetric measurements. The absorption coefficient of the PLZT ceramics is an exponential function of the photon energy. Two values of characteristic Urbach energy have been found ΔE1 = 106 meV and ΔE2 = 238 meV. The first one is a characteristic of the potential of electron-phonon interaction of the optically excited transitions from the valence band to the conduction band and does not depend on lattice defects or admixtures. The other characterises the electron-phonon interaction at optical transitions between two localized electron states in the energy gap separ…
Resonance scattering in macromolecular structure research
2005
Resonance (or anomalous) X-ray scattering of partially ordered macromolecular structures, amorphous materials and solutions is encountered in the near edge region of X-ray absorption edges where the resonant real part f' of atomic form factors shows the strongest dispersion. The requirements of spectral brilliance in the near absorption edges can only be met by synchrotron radiation emitted from high energy electron (positron) storage rings. Resonance scattering yields three basic scattering functions. This compares to contrast variation in neutron scattering. The relations to isomorphous replacement methods of crystallography are discussed. The analysis of the basic scattering functions in…
Growth and characterization of ZnO1−xSx highly mismatched alloys over the entire composition
2015
Alloys from ZnO and ZnS have been synthesized by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering over the entire alloying range. The ZnO1−xSx films are crystalline for all compositions. The optical absorption edge of these alloys decreases rapidly with small amount of added sulfur (x ∼ 0.02) and continues to red shift to a minimum of 2.6 eV at x = 0.45. At higher sulfur concentrations (x > 0.45), the absorption edge shows a continuous blue shift. The strong reduction in the band gap for O-rich alloys is the result of the upward shift of the valence-band edge with x as observed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. As a result, the room temperature bandgap of ZnO1−xSx alloys can be tuned from 3.7 eV to …
